"Put her down," Evelyn Harrow said.
The musicians stopped. Nora, standing beside the birthday cake in a burgundy dress, went pale.
"She called me," Ethan replied. "She was hiding in the coat closet. She said someone told her I wasn't coming because I didn't love her anymore."
"You were forbidden to come here."
"By a temporary order filed this morning and delivered to an apartment I left six months ago? That's convenient."
Lily buried her face in his neck.
"Daddy, don't let them send me away."
Nora moved forward. "No one is sending you away, sweetheart."
Lily looked at her mother. "Mr. Vale said I would live at the school in Switzerland. He said Daddy would go to prison."
A murmur moved through the guests. Marcus Vale, the Harrow family's silver-haired attorney, was nowhere in sight.
Evelyn's jaw tightened. "Children misunderstand adult conversations."
"Then explain it," Ethan said. "Explain why Marcus was talking to my daughter about prison."
Nora lowered her voice. "Ethan, please. Not here."
"You chose here when you let him frighten her at her own birthday party."
"I did not let him do anything."
"You signed the custody petition."
Nora flinched, and Ethan saw the answer before she spoke.
"I signed what I had to sign."
"That sounds like the last two years of our marriage."
Evelyn stepped between them. Pearls gleamed at her throat like a row of small, hard teeth.
"You stole from the Harrow Foundation," she said. "You turned my son Adrian against this family, and he died helping you escape the consequences. You will not use Lily as a shield."
Ethan's arms tightened around the child.
"I found money missing. Adrian believed me. Three days later his brakes failed, and Marcus produced records saying I took the money. You never asked why the evidence arrived so quickly."
"Because guilt often prepares its own defense."
"And fear prepares convenient lies."
Nora whispered, "Stop."
Lily lifted her head. "Grandpa Julian said Daddy tells the truth even when it costs him."
The room went still. Julian Harrow had been dead for eleven days.
Ethan looked at the bear. A crooked seam ran along its left paw, newly stitched with blue thread.
"When did Grandpa give you Maple?" he asked.

Nora's glass shattered on the floor.
Evelyn whispered, "Julian, what did you do?"
A uniformed deputy entered behind Ethan. "Mr. Cole, I need you to surrender the child."
Lily began to sob. "No!"
Ethan kissed her temple and placed her in Nora's arms.
"Listen to me," he said. "I am not leaving you. I am going to prove why they are afraid of this key."
Nora held his gaze. "They will arrest you if you run."
"Then don't lie about where I went."
He closed his fist around the key and walked back through the open door, knowing there was no life left to return to until the dead had finally been heard.
