The Marble Curtain

Chapter 1: The Outcast in the Golden Hall

Crystal chandeliers from the ceiling, dozens of meters high, cast shimmering, mirror-like streaks of light onto the black and white marble floor. The Grand Plaza Hotel's grand ballroom was overflowing with opulence tonight. The clinking of glasses mingled with the melodious sound of a violin. Gentlemen in elegant tuxedos and ladies in flowing evening gowns chatted and laughed, creating a perfect picture of the upper class.

Amidst this atmosphere thick with expensive perfume, Sarah entered.

Her appearance was like a smudge of ink on a pristine white sheet of paper. Her dreadlock hair was hastily tied up, her gray denim shirt was worn and frayed at the shoulders, and her faded jeans had several large frayed spots at the knees. She wore simple slippers and clutched a faux leather handbag with a peeling corner. Sarah froze in front of the large glass door, her anxious eyes darting around, a sense of confusion and alienation evident on her weathered face.

"Hey! You're not allowed here. Get out!"

A cold, arrogant voice cut through the background music. James – the hotel's self-important lobby manager – strode forward. His impeccably tailored black suit, neatly pressed silk tie, and gleaming gold nameplate on his lapel were symbols of his proud power. He stood directly in front of Sarah, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe with undisguised disgust.

"Get out. This place isn't for people like you; you can't afford to set foot here," James lowered his voice, but the cruelty in each word was palpable.

Sarah took a step back, but her eyes didn't waver. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice calm and steady: "On what basis are you kicking me out? You don't even know how much money I have in my account."

James burst out laughing. He pointed his finger directly at Sarah's face, then turned to look at the other customers around him as if he'd just heard the funniest joke of the century: "On what basis? On the tattered clothes you're wearing! Ha ha, get out before I call security to throw you in the trash!"

Chapter 2: A Ruthless Reversal

James's arrogant laughter suddenly choked in his throat.

"How dare you! Who did you just tell to get out?"

A deep, authoritative, and stern voice rang out from behind the crowd. Guests automatically parted to make way. Mark stepped forward. He was about 40 years old, with a stern, square face, exuding the aura of someone who held the fate of thousands of employees in his hands. On the lapel of his high-end suit was a gold family crest pin – the symbol of the corporation's supreme leader.

As soon as James saw Mark, his arrogant expression vanished, replaced by a subservient smile and a bow: "Yes, Mr. CEO! This beggar woman barged into the VIP banquet hall without permission; I was trying to get rid of her to avoid offending our esteemed guests..."

"Shut up!" Mark roared, his eyes blazing with anger, making James tremble.

To James's astonishment and the curious gazes of hundreds of guests, the powerful CEO walked up to the impoverished woman. Without hesitation, he bowed deeply and respectfully said:

"Welcome, Chairman. I sincerely apologize for the delay in welcoming you."
