Chapter 14 - Fall of the Untouchables

The verdict did not take days. The military panel deliberated for less than three hours.
When the courtroom was reconvened at 16:00 hours, the atmosphere had shifted from tension to the grim finality of an execution. The public gallery was packed to capacity, every eye fixed on the front row where the accused stood to hear their fate.
"Accused, rise," Admiral Vance ordered.
Sterling and Briggs stood up side-by-side.
One was a broken general who had traded his honor for offshore millions; the other was a shattered bully who had believed his fists and his connections made him invulnerable.
"On the charge of conspiracy against the United States," Admiral Vance read, her tone measured and devastating, "as to Kevin Sterling: Guilty. As to Ryan Briggs: Guilty."
The gavel came down with a hollow crack.
BANG.
"On the charge of grand larceny of federal defense property: Guilty on all counts."
BANG.
"On the charge of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman: Guilty."
BANG.
"On the charge of attempted murder of an officer of the United States armed forces: Guilty."
BANG.
Briggs’ knees buckled.
He caught himself against the edge of the heavy oak desk, his breathing ragged and shallow. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving behind a waxy, sickly gray.
"Former Brigadier General Kevin Sterling," Admiral Vance declared, looking down from the bench with cold disdain. "You have disgraced the uniform of this nation. You have betrayed the sacred trust placed in you by the soldiers who served under your command, and you have endangered the national security of the United States for personal greed."
She paused, letting the weight of the sentence settle over the silent chamber.
"The panel sentences you to forfeiture of all pay, allowances, and accrued pensions; dishonorable discharge from the armed services; and confinement at hard labor at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth for the remainder of your natural life, without the possibility of parole."
Sterling closed his eyes.
A single muscle twitched in his jaw, but he did not speak. The military police officers behind him stepped forward, slipping heavy steel restraints over his wrists and securing a waist-chain around his torso. The golden boy of the General Staff was now Inmate Number 94102.
Admiral Vance turned her gaze to Briggs.
"Former Sergeant Ryan Briggs," she continued, her voice devoid of mercy. "You used intimidation, rank, and physical violence to cover the tracks of a criminal enterprise. You attempted to maim and kill a fellow service member who was carrying out her lawful duty."
Briggs looked up, tears finally spilling over his eyelids, running through the stubble on his cheeks. "Ma'am... please... I was ordered—"
"You had an obligation to refuse unlawful orders, Briggs," Vance cut him off with absolute authority. "Instead, you relished the cruelty. You chose to be a predator. And today, your choices have caught up with you."
She struck the bench one final time.
"You are sentenced to reduction in rank to Private E-1; total forfeiture of all benefits; dishonorable discharge; and thirty-five years of confinement at Fort Leavenworth."
BANG.
The courtroom erupted into quiet, urgent whispers as reporters scrambled for the exits to file their wire stories.
Two military police escorts hauled Briggs backward.
As he was turned toward the holding cell doors, his eyes met mine one last time.
There was no mockery left in him. No sneering laughter about "little girls in uniform." No arrogance. There was only the broken, terrified realization of a man who would spend the best decades of his life staring at concrete walls, remembering the day he decided to kick at my knee.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat.
I simply watched him disappear behind the heavy steel door, listening to the heavy clank of the deadbolt locking him away forever.
