PART 2: The Mask Shatters and the Horrifying Truth

I sat paralyzed in the driver's seat of my SUV, the silence in the cabin so absolute that I could hear the frantic, erratic thumping of my own heart. The heavy manila folder from the private investigator’s office rested on my lap like a block of lead. Every page, every line of text, every bank statement stared back at me with unblinking certainty. The evidence was irrefutable: recurring wire transfers totaling tens of thousands of dollars from Tessa Whitmore’s personal account to the investigator, accompanied by detailed email exchanges orchestrating Maren’s downfall.
The hotel where Maren had allegedly been photographed was a setup. The man in the photos was a hired actor. Even my family’s heirloom necklace—the definitive "smoking gun" I had found hidden in the back of Maren’s closet and used as an excuse to brand her a thief—had been planted by a maid whom Tessa had bribed. I had thrown my loyal wife out into the street while she was pregnant with my twins, all because of my blind arrogance and my misplaced trust in a venomous snake.
Right then, the SUV's dashboard screen lit up. The name "Tessa" appeared next to a heart emoji—a cruel, mocking irony. I forced a deep, stabilizing breath into my trembling chest and answered the call, keeping my voice as level as possible.
"Rowan, honey! Where are you?" Tessa’s voice purred through the car speakers, thick with manufactured sweetness. "The five-star restaurant downtown has prepared everything for our wedding menu tasting. My mother and the designers are all waiting for you. Hurry over, I have a surprise for you today."
A "surprise"? I let out a hollow, bitter laugh, a wave of pure revulsion rising in my throat. But I knew I couldn't tip my hand just yet. If I lost my temper over the phone, she might liquidate her assets or find a way to cover her tracks. Channeling the cold, calculated composure of a seasoned CEO, I replied, "I have some urgent, unexpected business to iron out with a partner at the office. Go ahead back to the villa first. I'll meet you there in an hour. Postpone the tasting until tomorrow."
When I finally stepped through the doors of the lavish villa—the very place where, a year ago, Maren had fallen to her knees, weeping until her voice cracked, begging me to believe her—Tessa was lounging effortlessly on the plush leather sofa. She still wore her oversized designer sunglasses, idly scrolling through a regal guest list on her tablet.
"Rowan! You’re home!" Tessa beamed, standing up to throw herself into my arms for a kiss.
I coldly stepped aside, letting her stumble slightly into empty air. Before she could even open her mouth to question me, I slammed the thick file down onto the glass coffee table. The sharp crack echoed through the room as bank receipts, screenshot messages, and signed confessions scattered right before her eyes.
"What... what is this, honey?" Tessa froze, the smile dying on her lips. She slowly lowered her sunglasses, her eyes darting frantically across the papers on the table before looking up at me, trying to feign innocence. "Did you bring work home from the office again? You look terrifying..."
"Stop acting, Tessa!" I roared, the sheer volume of my voice rattling the walls of the cavernous living room. "Look at it! Look closely! The wire transfers from your personal account to the private eye. A signed confession from the man in those hotel photos. And the statement from the maid you paid to frame Maren! You directed this entire theater from day one, didn't you?!"
The color drained from Tessa’s face instantly, leaving her a ghostly, sickly pale. She took a step back, her lips trembling soundless words. Seeing the legally airtight evidence stacked against her, the mask of the refined, gentle socialite she had worn for the past year shattered into dust. Her features contorted, revealing the raw, ugly reality of a woman consumed by greed and malice.

"Fine! Yes, I did it!" Tessa hissed, abandoning all pretense. She shrieked, her voice turning piercing and venomous. "So what?! What was Maren anyway? Just a penniless, small-town girl with absolutely no background! How was she supposed to stand beside a CEO like you? How was she going to help you expand your empire? Only I—a daughter of the Whitmore dynasty—am your equal! I only took what rightfully belonged to me. You should be thanking me, Rowan!"
Looking at the manic woman standing before me, a violent shiver ran down my spine. I felt a deep, sickening disgust—not just for her, but for myself. Because of my pride, because of the bloated ego of a successful man, I had welcomed a demon into my home and ruthlessly banished the only woman who had ever loved me with her entire soul.
