Chapter 11 - The Sister-in-Law’s Broken Alibi

By Tuesday afternoon, the legal machinery of justice was crushing the conspirators with the weight of an avalanche.
In the downtown Los Angeles federal detention facility, Chloe Sterling had spent thirty-six hours without her designer wardrobe, her manicurist, or her cocaine. The brittle arrogance that had defined her entire adult life had completely dissolved under the fluorescent lights of an interrogation room.
Marcus Sterling and I sat behind the one-way glass of an observation room while Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins laid a stack of financial affidavits on the metal table before Chloe.
Chloe was shaking. She wore an oversized orange prison jumpsuit, her unwashed hair pulled back in a tangled knot.
"Chloe," Prosecutor Jenkins said, her voice calm, level, and utterly devoid of mercy. "Your sister Victoria signed an affidavit two hours ago stating that the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars wired to your Manhattan gallery was an unauthorized loan orchestrated entirely by you and Harrison."
Chloe’s head snapped up, her bloodshot eyes wide with disbelief. "What? Victoria said that? That lying, backstabbing snake! It was her idea! She told me Julian was too busy playing corporate savior in Asia to ever check the petty domestic accounts!"
"Victoria claims you threatened her," Jenkins continued smoothly, turning a page. "She claims you told her you would expose her past offshore tax shelters if she didn't provide cash to cover your gambling debts at the underground tables in Atlantic City."
"That’s a lie!" Chloe shrieked, slamming her cuffed hands against the steel table. "I have the voicemails! I have the text threads! She called me from Julian’s private jet! She said, 'The maid won't say a word because Harrison told her she'll be deported if she opens her mouth.' Victoria wanted that diamond choker from Harry Winston for the Met Gala! She took thirty percent of every dollar skimmed from that house!"
Behind the glass, Marcus leaned toward me. "That’s it. That is the final nail for Victoria. We now have cross-confessions without offering Chloe a single ounce of immunity."
"Did she sign the sworn statement regarding Arthur?" I asked.
"Ten minutes ago," Marcus said, tapping a document in his lap. "Chloe confirmed that Uncle Arthur personally introduced Harrison to an offshore money-laundering fixer in Zurich back in 2021. Arthur guaranteed the line of credit for Chloe’s gallery using Vance Enterprises corporate stock without board authorization."
I watched Chloe sob uncontrollably on the other side of the glass, burying her face in her cuffed hands. For years, she had looked down on working women like Rosa Martinez, treating them like disposable props in the lavish theater of her vanity. Now, sitting in an interrogation room facing eight to ten years in federal custody, she was finally learning what it meant to have no safety net, no private jet, and no one coming to save her.
I turned away from the glass. "Let the prosecutors do their work, Marcus. I'm done looking at ghosts."

"Where are you going, Julian?"
"To Pasadena," I said. "To see what real strength looks like."
