Chapter 15 - The Golden Badge of Honor

Three months later, an Indian summer breeze swept across the municipal plaza under an unclouded azure sky.

The scene was the same plaza where the nightmare had begun, but the atmosphere had transformed entirely. Over three thousand citizens packed the steps of City Hall. In the front row sat the families of honest fallen officers, not in mourning, but in celebration of a department cleansed of corruption from the top down.

Raymond Henderson and his six co-conspirators were currently housed in a federal supermax facility, facing life sentences without the possibility of parole for racketeering, high treason, and first-degree murder.

At the center of the grand stage stood Mayor Evelyn Cross, holding an open velvet box containing the highest award the state could bestow: the Golden Cross of Valor.

“There are moments in the history of a city when the line between darkness and light rests entirely upon the courage of those who refuse to break,” Mayor Cross spoke into the podium, her voice steady and clear. “Today, we correct a grave injustice. We restore the honor of a hero who was stolen from us, and we recognize the unyielding partnership that brought the truth to light.”

She turned to her left.

Marcus Vance stepped forward. He stood tall, wearing the crisp, midnight-blue dress uniform of a Commander, his gold detective star pinned proudly above his heart, fully exonerated with full departmental honors and back pay. Beside him stood Officer Daniel Miller, his uniform immaculate, wearing the silver braid of the newly reorganized Special Narcotics K9 Division.

Between them walked Titan.

His coat had grown back over the surgical scar along his left shoulder, though a faint, jagged line of silver fur marked where the trauma surgeons had extracted Henderson’s bullet. He walked without a limp, his head held high, his ears alert, and his tail sweeping back and forth in steady, proud arcs.

Neither officer held a leash.

Titan walked freely between the two men, glancing up with equal devotion at Miller on his left and Marcus on his right.

The crowd erupted into a deafening, standing ovation that echoed off the skyscrapers surrounding the square.

Mayor Cross knelt down, gently pinning a specially forged, solid-gold canine badge to Titan’s leather tactical collar. The inscription read: ARES-TITAN – PROTECTOR OF TRUTH.

Marcus looked over the dog’s head at Miller, a deep, brotherly smile breaking across his face. He extended his right hand.

“Thank you for keeping him safe, Daniel,” Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion.

Miller gripped Marcus’s hand firmly, pulling him into a brief, powerful embrace. “He kept us safe, Commander. He always has.”

Marcus turned to the sea of cheering citizens, raised his left hand, and gave two crisp taps to his collarbone with an open palm facing the sky. At the exact same second, Miller raised two fingers on his right hand.

Titan didn't hesitate.

He dropped into a flawless, proud sit between his two handlers, threw his head back toward the open sun, and let out a single, triumphant bark that was swallowed whole by the roar of the city he had saved.
