Chapter 8 - The Children’s Mercy Gala

The Metropolitan Grand Hotel glittered beneath a thousand lights.

Limousines lined the entrance. Television crews interviewed donors beneath banners displaying smiling children. Politicians shook hands. Wealthy families posed beside ice sculptures shaped like angels.

No one saw the weapons beneath tailored jackets.

No one saw Rocco’s men stationed among the hotel staff.

No one saw the hidden cameras Vincent’s team installed six hours earlier.

Sophie wore a dark blue dress and silver shoes. Elena had braided her hair. Dominic wore a tuxedo but still leaned on a cane.

Vincent adjusted Sophie’s coat.

“You stay with your mother.”

“I know.”

“If anything happens—”

“I go to the kitchen, find Mrs. Russo, and use the green phone.”

“And?”

“I don’t try to be a hero.”

Vincent raised an eyebrow.

Sophie sighed.

“I try not to be a hero.”

“That’s the best I’ll get, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

Inside the ballroom, a string quartet played while waiters carried champagne. Senator Halden stood beneath a chandelier speaking about protecting vulnerable children.

Vincent felt disgust twist in his stomach.

Leonard Price wore a recording device beneath his shirt. His granddaughter had been moved to safety. In exchange, he agreed to expose Gabriel’s accounts.

The plan depended on three elements.

Dominic would present a false authorization key.

Leonard would convince the buyers that the Orion network remained active.

Vincent would force Gabriel to discuss the trafficking operation while every word streamed to federal investigators and selected journalists.

They could not trust the local police.

Too many names appeared in the ledger.

At nine fifteen, Gabriel entered.

The room applauded.

He had donated ten million dollars to the Children’s Mercy Foundation over the years. His photograph appeared in hospitals and school programs. To the public, he was a quiet philanthropist.

Rocco entered through the service corridor wearing a hotel security uniform.

Vincent noticed the burn scars beneath his collar.

Gabriel approached Dominic first.

People nearby watched with curiosity, believing the brothers had reunited after years of private estrangement.

Gabriel embraced him.

“I’m pleased you survived.”

Dominic smiled without warmth.

“I’m disappointed you did.”

Gabriel laughed for the cameras.

Then he whispered, “Where is the key?”

“At the auction.”

“You brought Sophie?”

Dominic looked toward the dance floor.

“She’s here.”

Gabriel’s eyes followed.

Sophie stood between Elena and Mrs. Russo.

Rocco watched from the balcony.

The private auction began at ten in the hotel’s upper conference suite.

Twelve buyers attended.

A judge.

Two foreign businessmen.

A police deputy commissioner.

Three corporate executives.

Senator Halden.

Gabriel entered last.

Vincent waited near the windows.

Dominic and Leonard sat beside a secure computer.

Rocco guarded the door.

Gabriel addressed the room.

“Tonight, you are not purchasing a list of names. You are purchasing continuity. The city already belongs to us. Its courts, ports, contracts, and enforcement arms are available to those who understand the cost.”

Vincent watched the hidden camera light turn green.

The transmission had begun.

Senator Halden looked uneasy.

“You said the Torino organization supported this sale.”

Gabriel gestured toward Vincent.

“My nephew is present.”

Vincent said nothing.

One of the buyers opened a folder.

“What about the transportation routes?”

Rocco answered.

“Operational.”

“And the product?”

“Available.”

Product.

The word referred to human beings.

Vincent’s hands curled into fists.

Dominic entered the first code.

Leonard entered the second.

The screen requested the third authorization.

Gabriel looked at Dominic.

“Finish it.”

Dominic entered a sequence.

ACCESS DENIED.

Gabriel’s face tightened.

“Again.”

Dominic did.

ACCESS DENIED.

Rocco drew his weapon.

“You’re playing games.”

“No,” Dominic said. “I’m stalling.”

The conference room doors locked automatically.

The wall screens changed.

Instead of financial accounts, they displayed photographs from Mercy House.

Chains.

Passports.

Missing children.

The buyers stood in panic.

“What is this?” Halden demanded.

Vincent stepped forward.

“Your future trial.”

The livestream indicator appeared on every screen.

Forty-three journalists had received access.

Federal agents were watching from three command locations.

Gabriel stared at Leonard.

“You betrayed me.”

Leonard removed the microphone from beneath his collar.

“I learned from you.”

Rocco fired at the nearest camera.

The bullet shattered the lens, but five others remained.

He grabbed Senator Halden and pressed a gun to his head.

“Open the doors!”

Vincent did not move.

“You kill him, the world loses a criminal.”

Halden’s face turned purple.

“I am a United States senator!”

“And a customer,” Vincent replied.

Gabriel rushed toward the control panel.

Dominic blocked him with the cane.

Gabriel struck Dominic across the face and reached for the keyboard.

Vincent attacked.

They crashed into the conference table.

Outside, alarms began ringing.

Federal teams entered the hotel.

Guests screamed in the ballroom below.

Rocco fired through the door lock and dragged Halden into the corridor.

Tony pursued.

Vincent pinned Gabriel against the wall.

Gabriel smiled through blood.

“You think exposure ends this? Half those agents have supervisors in my accounts.”

“Not anymore.”

Vincent held up the micro-storage card.

“The final ledger uploaded ten minutes ago.”

Gabriel’s smile vanished.

A child screamed over Vincent’s earpiece.

Sophie.

Vincent released Gabriel and ran.

The ballroom had become chaos.

Guests pushed toward exits while hotel staff directed them into corridors. Smoke poured from the kitchen.

Elena stood near the stage, shouting Sophie’s name.

Mrs. Russo lay unconscious beside an overturned table.

“Where is she?” Vincent demanded.

“I turned for one second!”

A waiter’s jacket lay on the floor.

Rocco had used the panic.

Dominic reached them, bleeding from the mouth.

“Service elevator.”

They ran.

The elevator descended toward the underground garage.

Tony’s voice came through the radio.

“Rocco has Sophie. Black van leaving the west ramp.”

Vincent reached the garage as the van smashed through the security barrier.

He fired, but the vehicle disappeared into traffic.

Gabriel’s men attacked from behind parked cars.

Vincent took cover.

Dominic dragged Elena behind a concrete pillar.

A bullet struck Vincent’s side, stopped partly by his vest, and spun him to the ground.

Gabriel stepped from the smoke holding a pistol.

“You destroyed everything,” he said.

Vincent struggled to rise.

“No. Dominic did.”

Gabriel aimed at Dominic.

Elena threw herself in front of him.

Vincent fired from the ground.

The bullet struck Gabriel’s gun hand.

Tony appeared and tackled him.

Federal agents flooded the garage.

Gabriel was handcuffed while cameras captured his bloodied face.

But Vincent barely looked at him.

His niece was gone.

A phone rang inside Gabriel’s jacket.

Vincent answered.

Rocco’s voice whispered through the line.

“You wanted the city to see the truth.”

In the background, Sophie was crying.

“Now the city gets to watch you lose your family.”

The call ended.

Vincent looked at Gabriel.

“Where is he taking her?”

Gabriel laughed despite the blood on his hand.

“You believed Rocco worked for me.”

Vincent seized him by the collar.

“Where?”

May you like

Gabriel’s eyes gleamed.

“He never worked for anyone.”
