Chapter 13 - Charles Comes Home

Charles was released after serving part of his sentence.

Daniel received a call.

“I’m at the bus station.”

Nothing else.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Emily sat beside him.

“You going?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want to?”

“I don’t know.”

She smiled faintly.

“Look at you admitting uncertainty.”

“Marriage has ruined me.”

“Go.”

Daniel drove downtown.

Charles stood beside one duffel bag.

He looked older.

Smaller.

Daniel parked.

Neither hugged.

Charles got in.

For several minutes, they drove silently.

Finally Charles said, “I’m sorry.”

Daniel waited.

Charles continued.

“No excuses.”

Still Daniel said nothing.

“I stole.”

“Yes.”

“I helped Ray hide what he was doing.”

“Yes.”

“I threatened Emily.”

“Yes.”

Charles looked toward the window.

“I don’t know how to live with that.”

Daniel thought of his own guilt.

“You don’t get rid of it.”

Charles looked over.

“You use it to make the next decision differently.”

Charles laughed bitterly.

“Sarah?”

“Lily, actually.”

That surprised him.

Daniel did not bring Charles home.

Not yet.

He drove him to a reentry apartment arranged through his attorney.

Boundaries were not cruelty.

Daniel had learned that too.

Over the next year, Charles worked.

Quietly.

He did not return to philanthropy.

He did not seek public redemption.

He repaid restitution.

He wrote Emily a letter.

She chose not to answer.

Charles accepted that.

Eventually, Emily agreed to be in the same room with him at a foundation anniversary event.

No reconciliation.

No dramatic forgiveness.

Just coexistence.

Sometimes that was enough.

Lily was fourteen then.

Afterward she asked Charles:

“Are you still bad?”

Everyone froze.

Charles considered.

“I did bad things.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Daniel almost intervened.

Charles stopped him.

Then answered Lily.

“I’m trying not to be.”

Lily nodded.

“Okay.”

Later Charles whispered to Daniel, “She’s terrifying.”

“You have no idea.”

They laughed.

It was the first time they had laughed together in years.

Not everything broken returned to its original shape.

Daniel no longer wanted it to.

May you like

Some things rebuilt differently.

More honestly.
