Chapter 12 - The Cathedral Beneath the City

Sofia’s grave was empty.
I had always known that.
The explosion destroyed most of the car. The medical examiner identified her through jewelry, dental fragments, and blood recovered from the driver’s seat.
Her coffin contained sealed remains I was forbidden to view.
I had buried ashes, metal, and faith in men who were already owned.
The Moretti mausoleum stood beneath Holy Cross Cathedral.
My family had purchased the underground chamber before I was born. Marble statues guarded its entrance. Twelve generations of Morettis rested behind engraved stone.
Sofia’s name occupied the newest wall.
NO MORE SECRETS.
The phrase appeared beneath her dates.
I had chosen it because it was engraved inside her bracelet.
I had never understood it was an instruction.
At two in the morning, Enzo, Maeve, and I entered the mausoleum through a service tunnel. Anna remained above with the wounded and tried to contact federal authorities outside the city.
We removed Sofia’s marble plaque.
Behind it stood a narrow steel door.
The brass key opened the lock.
A staircase descended beneath the cathedral.
“Someone took the key from Elena,” Maeve said. “How can we open this?”
I held up a copy Enzo’s locksmith had made before the café attack.
Paranoia had kept me alive.
Tonight, it might keep everyone alive.
The staircase ended in an archive.
Thousands of files lined underground shelves. Adoption records. Medical reports. Financial transfers. Photographs of children who had disappeared into new families.
The Nine had built their power by controlling identity itself.
They created heirs.
Erased witnesses.
Replaced dead children with living ones and living children with legal ghosts.
At the center of the room stood Sofia’s original ledger inside a glass case.
Beside it was a video camera.
The red light was on.
“They can see us,” Enzo said.
A door opened behind the case.
Damon Crowe entered with Luca at gunpoint.
Elena and Gabriel walked in front of them.
Elena’s eyes found me.
She did not cry.
Luca’s face was swollen. One arm hung uselessly at his side.
Damon removed his mask.
He was older than the photographs, with white hair at his temples and the black crow tattoo rising above his collar.
“You brought the family exactly where it began,” he said.
“Release the children.”
“Still giving orders.”
He pressed the pistol against Luca’s spine.
“Your brother attempted to bargain with me. His life for the children.”
Luca gave me a bitter smile.
“I finally made a noble choice. Naturally, it failed.”
Damon looked toward Maeve.
“The last O’Shea daughter.”
“Not the last,” Enzo said.
Recognition crossed Damon’s face.
“So the lost boy remembers.”
“I remember enough.”
Damon laughed.
“Nora tried to destroy us with records. Sofia tried with recordings. Maeve tried by hiding. But children always return to the place adults refuse to discuss.”
“What do you want?” I asked.
“The ledger and the succession.”
“You expect me to make you king?”
“Not me.”
A second man entered.
He walked slowly with a silver cane.
He was more than eighty years old.
His face resembled photographs from our family chapel.
Lorenzo Moretti.
My grandfather.
The dead man whose payments continued for decades.
“My grandson,” he said.
I felt no family in the words.
“You killed Nora.”
“I protected the family.”
“You burned children alive.”
“I created men from what survived.”
He gestured toward Enzo and me.
“You became exactly what the city required.”
“I became what you taught me to hate.”
Lorenzo’s smile faded.
“You were born with O’Shea weakness. Alessandro spent years cutting it out of you.”
Maeve moved closer to me.
“My mother was stronger than every man in this room.”
“She died begging.”
Enzo lunged.
Damon fired.
The bullet struck Enzo in the side.
Maeve caught him as he fell.
Elena screamed.
I took one step forward.
Damon aimed at her.
“Choose carefully.”
Lorenzo approached the glass case.
“The ledger will be destroyed. Marco will publicly accept leadership of the Nine. Luca will return to the legitimate businesses. The children will be placed with families who understand silence.”
“No,” Elena said.
Everyone looked at her.
She stood beside Gabriel, fists closed.
“You’re old and mean.”
Lorenzo stared as though she were an insect.
Elena continued.
“And you’re not a king.”
For the first time, Lorenzo lost control.
He raised his cane.
Luca stepped between them.
The blade hidden inside the cane entered his stomach.
Damon grabbed Elena.
I fired.
The bullet shattered the glass case.
The original ledger fell into Luca’s blood.
Sprinklers activated.
Steel doors began closing around the archive.
Lorenzo shouted.
“What have you done?”
Sofia’s recorded voice filled the chamber.
“You opened the case.”
Red lights flashed above us.
Enzo looked at the ceiling.
“The archive is transmitting.”
Every document, recording, and name was being uploaded beyond the Nine’s control.
Damon tightened his arm around Elena’s throat.

“If the empire falls,” he said, “the child falls with it.”
Then he dragged her through the final closing door.
