Chapter 12 - Oscar’s Empty Chair
Three years after Arturo died, the caregiver foundation held its largest fundraiser.
Vanessa arrived early.
Oscar did not.
At first I was annoyed.
Then worried.
He always called.
At 7:30, my phone rang.
Hospital.
Oscar had been in a car accident.
Everything inside me became seventy-five years old at once.
Vanessa drove.
I prayed.
Oscar survived.
Broken ribs.
A fractured arm.
Concussion.
When I entered his hospital room, he looked at me.
“Mom.”
I touched his face.
“You idiot.”
He smiled weakly.
“Good to see you too.”
For two weeks, I sat beside him.
Not every hour.
I had learned something during Arturo’s illness.
Caregiving should not consume the caregiver completely.
Vanessa took mornings.
I took afternoons.
Oscar’s new partner, Julia, took evenings.
We shared the burden.
One afternoon Oscar watched me pour water.
“You did this alone for Dad.”
“Yes.”
“For eight years.”
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
“We’ve covered this.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I understood it intellectually.”
He looked around the hospital room.
“I didn’t understand this.”
The helplessness.
Needing someone to adjust your pillow.
Being ashamed to ask for help using the bathroom.
Watching the clock because the person you love hasn’t arrived yet.
Oscar cried.
“I left you alone.”
“Yes.”
“I left him alone.”
“Sometimes.”
He looked at me.
“How did you forgive me?”
I thought carefully.
“I didn’t wake up one morning and forgive you.”
“Then?”
“You became somebody easier to forgive.”
He smiled through tears.
That was the truth.
Forgiveness had not been a gift I handed my children.
It was a road they walked back toward me.
And I met them halfway.
When Oscar recovered, he volunteered at the caregiver center.
Not for publicity.
He sat with families.
Listened.
Sometimes cried with them.
Arturo’s absence remained inside all of us.
