Chapter 6 - The Trap

The photograph of Chloe changed everything.
Within minutes, officers surrounded the secure apartment. My mother and daughter were moved through an interior hallway to another location. Detectives searched the street, nearby buildings, and traffic-camera footage.
They found no sign of Julian.
The picture had been taken approximately forty minutes before it reached me.
Someone had known exactly where Chloe was.
Detective Cole believed there were only three possibilities.
Julian had followed the transport.
Someone inside law enforcement had leaked the address.
Or the phone beneath Chloe’s dresser was not the only tracking device he had planted.
Technicians examined her backpack, clothing, stuffed rabbit, and tablet.
Inside the seam of the rabbit, they found a GPS tracker.
Chloe had carried that toy everywhere.
Julian knew it.
I stared at the tiny black device inside an evidence bag and wondered how long he had been watching us.
Detective Cole placed an officer outside my room and asked whether I was willing to help them draw Julian out.
My mother objected immediately.
“She is recovering from multiple fractures.”
“We would not place her in physical danger,” he said. “But Julian believes she is frightened enough to obey him. That belief may make him careless.”
I already knew what he wanted.
“A message.”
Detective Cole nodded.
I sent Julian a reply from the hospital phone.
I’ll withdraw everything. I just want Chloe safe.
His answer came nine minutes later.
No police.
I typed again.
Tell me what to do.
The response arrived almost immediately.
Tomorrow. 8:00 p.m. Parking level C. Come alone.
I looked down at my casts.
“He knows I can’t walk.”
“He may plan to use a wheelchair transfer,” Detective Cole said. “Or he may not expect you personally. He could be testing whether we are controlling your phone.”
The investigators decided to continue the exchange.
I told Julian I could not leave the hospital without help.
He replied with a name.
Nurse Emily Carter.
Dr. Hale read the message twice.
“There is no Emily Carter assigned to this floor.”
Hospital records showed that a contract nurse with that name had worked three shifts during the week after my crash. She had accessed my chart eleven times, including on days when she was not caring for me.
Security footage showed her speaking with Julian in a service hallway.
By the time officers reached her apartment, it was empty.
A neighbor reported seeing her load two suitcases into a car that afternoon.
The network surrounding Julian was larger than I had imagined.
He had Vanessa handling the money.
Curtis damaging the car.
Emily accessing my medical records.
Someone photographing Chloe.
For eleven years, I had believed Julian was controlling because he was insecure.
Now I understood that control was not a weakness in him.
It was a strategy.
The detectives created a plan around the parking-garage meeting. I would not attend. Instead, an undercover officer wearing a wig and hospital gown would sit in a wheelchair beneath poor lighting while tactical officers watched every entrance.
At 7:50 p.m., Detective Cole remained in my room with a live audio feed.
The parking structure hummed with distant engines.
At 8:03, a car door closed.
Footsteps approached.
A man’s voice said, “Audrey?”
Every part of me recognized Julian.
Even through the distorted microphone, I heard the same impatience he used when calling me from another room.
The undercover officer kept her face lowered.
Julian stepped closer.
“Where are the documents?”
No answer.
“I said, where are they?”
The officer whispered, “Chloe first.”
Julian laughed.
“You still think you’re negotiating.”
Another set of footsteps entered the garage.
A woman spoke.
Vanessa.
“We should leave. Something is wrong.”
Julian ignored her.
“You destroyed everything because you couldn’t stop digging through files that had nothing to do with you.”
The officer asked, “Did you damage the brakes?”
Silence.
Vanessa cursed under her breath.
Julian leaned closer to the wheelchair.
“You were supposed to die before you could ask that question.”
Detective Cole lifted one hand.
The arrest team moved.
Commands echoed through the speakers.
“Police! Show your hands!”
Vanessa screamed.
A vehicle engine roared.
Tires squealed across concrete.
The audio feed dissolved into shouting and static.
“What happened?” I demanded.
Detective Cole listened to his radio.
His face tightened.
“They’re fleeing.”
A dark SUV crashed through the exit barrier. Police vehicles followed as Julian drove toward the freeway.
Vanessa called 911 from inside the vehicle.
The dispatcher heard her screaming that Julian had a gun.
Then the line disconnected.
The pursuit lasted seventeen minutes.
Julian exited the freeway and drove into an industrial district near the river. There, he abandoned the SUV beneath an overpass.
Vanessa was found inside with a head injury.
Julian was gone.
Officers recovered a handgun, three prepaid phones, cash, and forged passports.
Vanessa was transported to a hospital under guard.
At 10:40 p.m., she asked to speak with investigators.
Detective Price left to conduct the interview.
She returned after midnight.
“Vanessa claims Julian planned everything,” she said.
“Do you believe her?”
“Only parts.”
Vanessa admitted the affair, financial theft, and insurance fraud. She claimed Julian manipulated her and promised they would start a new life after my death.
She also admitted giving my wedding ring to herself after Julian removed it from the hospital property bag.
But according to Vanessa, Julian’s plan had not ended with the crash.
“He expected you to die,” Detective Price explained. “When you survived, he began pressuring hospital employees to report on your condition.”
“Emily.”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“Vanessa says Emily is not a nurse.”
Dr. Hale’s face changed.
“What is she?”
“Her real name is Emily Voss. She previously worked as a medical assistant but lost her certification for falsifying prescriptions. Julian paid her to obtain a contract position using stolen credentials.”
I remembered unfamiliar hands adjusting my IV during the first week. I remembered waking with headaches stronger than the doctors expected.
“Did she do something to me?”
Detective Price hesitated.
“We are reviewing every medication administration record.”
My mouth went dry.
Vanessa had provided one more piece of information.
Julian kept emergency cash and documents at a private storage unit. Investigators searched it before dawn.
Inside, they found clothing, weapons, fake identification, and photographs of my mother’s house.
They also found a handwritten schedule listing Chloe’s school hours, my rehabilitation appointments, and Detective Cole’s home address.
At the bottom of the schedule, Julian had written two words.

Final correction.
Beside the words was tomorrow’s date.
