Chapter 4 :

The war arrived before sunset.

One moment I was standing in Arthur Blackwood’s study with my son in my arms.

The next, alarms erupted throughout the estate.

A deep mechanical siren echoed through the hallways.

Security personnel moved instantly.

Doors locked.

Metal barriers descended over windows.

Monitors flickered to life across the walls.

The mansion transformed from a home into a fortress.

My heart pounded.

“What's happening?”

Arthur was already moving.

“Julian.”

The single word carried decades of anger.

One of the security officers rushed into the room.

“North gate breached.”

“How?”

Arthur demanded.

“The vehicles rammed through.”

The officer looked shaken.

“Sir, they came prepared.”

Arthur's expression darkened.

“Of course they did.”

Another guard entered.

“Media helicopters are approaching.”

I blinked.

“Media?”

The guard nodded.

“Julian invited them.”

Arthur cursed.

Suddenly I understood.

This wasn't just an attack.

It was a performance.

A carefully orchestrated spectacle.

Julian wanted cameras.

He wanted witnesses.

He wanted the world to believe he was rescuing his child.

Not stealing him.

Arthur looked at me.

“Come with me.”

We moved quickly through a hidden corridor behind the library.

The walls were reinforced steel.

The passage descended beneath the estate.

Every few seconds another alarm sounded.

My son remained asleep against my chest.

A miracle I couldn't understand.

Or perhaps babies simply didn't know when the world was collapsing.

I envied him.

Arthur led me into a secure underground room.

It resembled a command center.

Screens covered entire walls.

Security feeds displayed every corner of the property.

Dozens of armed guards coordinated through headsets.

Then one monitor caught my attention.

My breath stopped.

Julian.

He stood outside the front gates.

Rain poured around him.

Television cameras surrounded him.

Reporters crowded nearby.

And beside him stood Eleanor.

Smiling.

Even from the screen I could see the satisfaction in her eyes.

Julian faced the cameras dramatically.

“My ex-wife has been manipulated by dangerous individuals.”

Liar.

The word screamed inside my head.

“She is emotionally unstable after childbirth.”

My hands tightened around my son.

“She has kidnapped our child.”

Another lie.

“Today I am simply trying to bring my son home.”

The reporters eagerly wrote down every word.

Arthur watched silently.

His expression unreadable.

Eleanor stepped forward.

Tears suddenly appeared in her eyes.

Fake tears.

Professional tears.

“I only want my grandson safe.”

I almost laughed.

The performance was flawless.

To an outsider, they looked concerned.

Heartbroken.

Desperate.

No one watching would suspect they had spent months destroying my life.

One reporter asked a question.

“Mr. Vance, is it true Arthur Blackwood is involved?”

Julian's expression became carefully controlled.

“Yes.”

The cameras zoomed closer.

“We believe Mr. Blackwood may be exploiting a vulnerable woman for reasons we don't yet understand.”

Arthur actually smiled.

Not a pleasant smile.

A dangerous one.

The kind predators wear before striking.

“Interesting.”

“What?” I asked.

Arthur folded his arms.

“He's nervous.”

“He doesn't look nervous.”

“That's because you've only known businessman Julian.”

The billionaire's eyes narrowed.

“I knew his grandfather.”

A chill ran through me.

“His grandfather?”

Arthur nodded.

“The man who helped destroy my family.”

The room fell silent.

For the first time, I realized this conflict wasn't about me.

Not entirely.

It never had been.

I was standing in the middle of a war that began decades before I was born.

Arthur looked toward another monitor.

“What year were you told your parents died?”

I frowned.

“Twenty-five years ago.”

“And what reason were you given?”

“A car accident.”

Arthur nodded.

“That's what the newspapers reported.”

Something in his tone bothered me.

“What actually happened?”

The billionaire remained silent for several seconds.

Then he answered.

“They were executed.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

“What?”

“Your parents were hunted.”

I couldn't breathe.

Arthur continued.

“Charlotte discovered something.”

My mind struggled to keep up.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did she discover?”

The room seemed to darken.

Arthur's eyes hardened.

“The men controlling the genetic program never ended it.”

A cold sensation settled in my stomach.

“The program Dr. Whitaker mentioned?”

Arthur nodded.

“For decades they collected information.”

“About bloodlines?”

“About power.”

I frowned.

“I don't understand.”

Arthur moved toward a large screen.

Several old documents appeared.

Classified files.

Medical records.

Photographs.

“The program's purpose was simple.”

His voice became colder.

“Predict which families would control future wealth.”

I stared.

“That sounds insane.”

“It is.”

He pointed toward one document.

“Yet governments funded it.”

Another.

“Corporations funded it.”

Another.

“And families like the Vances built empires from it.”

My pulse quickened.

“What does that have to do with my son?”

Arthur looked directly at me.

“Everything.”

The room fell silent.

Then he delivered the truth.

“Your son inherited access.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“Charlotte uncovered accounts.”

“Accounts?”

“Trusts.”

My confusion deepened.

Arthur inhaled slowly.

“The original founders hid assets across generations.”

The next sentence changed everything.

“Your son legally controls them.”

For several seconds nobody spoke.

I stared.

Unable to process the information.

Arthur continued.

“The combined value exceeds forty billion dollars.”

The room spun.

Forty billion.

Not million.

Billion.

My knees nearly gave out.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

Arthur shook his head.

“It's exactly why people are willing to kill.”

I looked down at my baby.

The tiny child sleeping peacefully in my arms.

How could anyone look at him and see money?

How could anyone look at him and see power?

Then I remembered Julian.

And suddenly the answer felt obvious.

Because some people never see children.

They only see opportunities.

A guard suddenly rushed into the room.

“Sir.”

Arthur turned.

“What now?”

The guard looked pale.

“They released the court order publicly.”

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?”

The guard handed Arthur a tablet.

Arthur read silently.

Then his jaw tightened.

“They moved faster than expected.”

Fear crawled up my spine.

“What happened?”

Arthur looked at me.

“The court has temporarily awarded custody to Julian.”

The world froze.

“No.”

“Until an investigation is completed.”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“He abandoned us.”

“I know.”

“He divorced me.”

“I know.”

“He left me homeless.”

“I know.”

“Then how can they do this?”

Arthur's answer was brutally simple.

“Because Julian bought the judge.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then another voice interrupted.

A calm voice.

A familiar voice.

“Not exactly.”

Everyone turned.

The room door opened.

An elderly woman entered.

White hair.

Sharp eyes.

Elegant posture.

Arthur immediately stood.

To my shock.

The billionaire actually stood.

“Margaret.”

The woman nodded.

“Arthur.”

I looked between them.

“Who is she?”

Arthur's expression changed.

For the first time, genuine respect appeared.

“This is Margaret Hale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Then every security guard in the room straightened.

Instantly.

As though royalty had entered.

Margaret looked at me.

Warmly.

“You have your mother's eyes.”

My breath caught.

“You knew her?”

The elderly woman smiled sadly.

“I held you when you were born.”

The room disappeared around me.

“What?”

“I was there.”

Tears immediately filled my eyes.

“You knew my mother.”

“I loved your mother.”

My throat tightened.

“So where were you?”

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Twenty-five years of pain lived inside those words.

Margaret's expression broke.

For the first time, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

“We failed.”

Silence followed.

Heavy silence.

Then she stepped forward.

“And we're going to fix it.”

Arthur frowned.

“What happened?”

Margaret placed a file on the table.

The moment Arthur opened it, his expression darkened.

Dangerously.

“What is this?”

“A confession.”

My pulse quickened.

“From who?”

Margaret looked directly at me.

“Julian's grandfather.”

The room exploded into silence.

Arthur slowly read the pages.

His hands trembled.

The billionaire never seemed like a man capable of fear.

Yet now I saw it clearly.

“What does it say?” I whispered.

Margaret answered.

“It names everyone involved.”

My heart pounded.

“The murders?”

She nodded.

“The kidnappings.”

Another nod.

“The cover-up.”

Another.

Then came the final revelation.

“And the location of the original inheritance records.”

Arthur looked up sharply.

“You found them?”

Margaret smiled.

“Yes.”

The billionaire actually laughed.

A short disbelieving laugh.

For the first time since I'd met him, hope appeared in his eyes.

Then every monitor in the room suddenly went black.

The lights flickered.

The command center fell silent.

The guards looked around in alarm.

“What happened?”

A technician shouted from across the room.

“System breach!”

Arthur's expression hardened instantly.

“How?”

The technician's face drained of color.

“They're inside.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

The technician pointed toward the security map.

A flashing red dot appeared inside the mansion.

Then another.

And another.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone had already infiltrated the estate.

A guard grabbed his radio.

“Locate the intruders.”

Static answered.

Then a voice.

Cold.

Confident.

Dangerously familiar.

“Too late.”

The voice echoed through every speaker in the room.

Julian.

A smile spread across his voice.

“I've already found what I came for.”

My heart stopped.

Instinctively I tightened my grip on my son.

Arthur's face became stone.

“What did you do?”

Julian laughed.

The sound chilled me.

“Check the nursery wing.”

Every person in the room froze.

The technician typed frantically.

Security footage returned.

A camera appeared on screen.

The nursery wing.

Empty.

Destroyed.

A decoy nursery.

Then another camera.

Another room.

Another corridor.

And finally—

A guard lying unconscious on the floor.

Beside him stood Eleanor.

Holding a folder.

My folder.

The evidence I had collected against them.

Months of records.

Bank transfers.

Fraud documents.

Everything.

Eleanor smiled directly into the camera.

Then fed the entire folder into a fireplace.

I watched helplessly as flames consumed every page.

Every proof.

Every secret.

Gone.

Arthur cursed.

The guards rushed into motion.

But Julian's voice returned through the speakers.

Calm.

Victorious.

“You're looking in the wrong place.”

The room became silent.

Then he delivered the most terrifying sentence yet.

“Because while you've all been protecting the baby…”

My blood turned cold.

Julian laughed softly.

“Nobody thought to protect the mother.”

At that exact moment, cold metal pressed against the back of my neck.

A gun.

Someone stood behind me.

Someone who had been inside the room the entire time.

The command center froze.

Arthur slowly turned pale.

Margaret's eyes widened.

The security guards raised their weapons.

Too late.

Far too late.

A man's voice whispered directly into my ear.

“Put the baby down.”

And from the horror on Arthur Blackwood's face…

May you like

I knew the man holding the gun wasn't working for Julian.

He was working for someone even more dangerous.
