Chapter 9: Elena’s Last Victory
The investigation expanded within days.
Victor Calloway agreed to testify against Senator Stone and Valeria in exchange for consideration during sentencing. His files revealed a network of stolen charitable funds, shell corporations, political bribes, blackmail payments, and manipulated criminal investigations.
Elena had discovered the scheme while reviewing unusual withdrawals from the family foundation.
At first, she believed Victor was acting alone.
Then she found payments linked to Senator Stone.
Valeria had been used as a social connection, entering wealthy circles and gathering information about business owners who could be pressured, controlled, or exploited.
Alejandro had been their greatest target.
His companies had international accounts, government contracts, and access to powerful investors.
Elena’s death gave Valeria an opportunity.
She approached Alejandro during the worst period of his life, comforted him, gained Sofia’s trust, and slowly moved closer to his businesses.
The poisoning plan had been designed to remove Lucía and deepen Alejandro’s dependence on Valeria.
Once married, Valeria would have gained legal influence over Sofia and access to Alejandro’s estate.
The plan failed because Lucía smelled something wrong.
A single act of attention had destroyed three years of manipulation.
The trial began eight months later.
It attracted national attention.
Senator Stone entered the courtroom each morning in an expensive suit, refusing to look at Lucía. Valeria appeared in dark clothing with her hair tied neatly behind her head, still attempting to project elegance and innocence.
Alejandro testified for nearly six hours.
He described Valeria’s relationship with Sofia, the security recording, the hidden microphones, the chapel, and Valeria’s confession.
The defense attorney tried to portray him as a grieving widower desperate to blame someone for Elena’s accident.
Then prosecutors played the chapel recording.
Valeria’s voice filled the courtroom.

The jury heard her admit that she forced Elena’s car off the road.
Valeria looked at Alejandro while the recording played.
She did not appear sorry.
Lucía testified the next day.
She explained Elena’s final moments, Senator Stone’s threat at the hospital, her destroyed nursing career, and the anonymous warning that eventually brought her into Sofia’s home.
The defense attorney attempted to discredit her.
“You lied about your identity to obtain employment, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You searched private rooms.”
“Yes.”
“You concealed evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect this jury to believe you are trustworthy?”
Lucía looked toward Sofia, who was not present but whose photograph rested inside Alejandro’s pocket.
“I expect them to understand that fear makes ordinary people imperfect,” she said. “Courage is not having no fear. Courage is deciding that someone else’s life matters more than what fear can take from you.”
The courtroom remained silent.
The anonymous warning was eventually traced to Rebecca Shaw’s former legal assistant. Rebecca had instructed her to contact Lucía if anyone connected to Valeria moved into Alejandro’s home.
The assistant had waited because she feared Senator Stone.
When Valeria became engaged to Alejandro, she sent the photograph and arranged the false nanny agency.
She had hoped Lucía would enter the house, observe quietly, and alert authorities if Sofia was endangered.
Her plan had been risky.
But it worked.
Teresa testified under immunity for her involvement. She admitted placing the second bottle in the kitchen after Valeria told her it contained harmless medicine. When she saw the security footage being reviewed, she panicked and attempted to burn the bottle.
Victor then lured her away and abducted her.
Daniel testified about the security breach.
Patricia testified about Elena regaining consciousness.
Financial experts explained the stolen money.
Mechanics confirmed Elena’s brakes had been tampered with before the crash, forcing her to rely on the mountain road’s emergency curves. Valeria’s vehicle had struck Elena’s car from the side and pushed it through the barrier.
The evidence became overwhelming.
Still, Alejandro feared the influence of Senator Stone.
He had watched powerful people escape consequences before.
On the final day, the jury returned after seven hours of deliberation.
Alejandro sat beside Lucía in the front row.
Their hands rested close together but did not touch.
Valeria stood.
Senator Stone stared forward.
The clerk read the verdicts.
Valeria Stone: guilty of attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and the murder of Elena Vega.
Senator Richard Stone: guilty of conspiracy, obstruction, financial crimes, witness intimidation, and accessory to murder.
Victor had already pleaded guilty to conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, and evidence tampering.
Valeria showed no emotion until the judge mentioned Sofia.
“You did not see that child as a human being,” the judge said. “You saw her as a path to wealth, control, and revenge.”
Valeria suddenly turned toward Alejandro.
“I loved you!”
Security officers moved closer.
Alejandro stood.
“No,” he said. “You wanted to own what Elena and I built.”
“You would have chosen me if Lucía had stayed away.”
“I would never have chosen the truth you were hiding.”
Valeria’s eyes moved to Lucía.
“This is what you wanted? My life?”
Lucía shook her head.
“I wanted Sofia to have hers.”
Valeria was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Senator Stone received a sentence that ensured he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded the steps.
Alejandro refused to speak.
Lucía gave only one statement.
“Elena saved her daughter long before any of us understood how.”
That evening, Alejandro took Sofia and Lucía to Elena’s grave.
The sun was setting behind the trees.
Sofia placed a drawing beside the headstone. It showed four people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
“Mommy is in the sky,” she explained. “Daddy is here. I’m here. And Lucía is here.”
Lucía’s eyes filled with tears.
Alejandro knelt beside Sofia.
“Your mother would be proud of you.”
“She would be proud of Lucía too.”
“I think so.”
Sofia looked between them.
“Can Lucía stay forever?”
Lucía lowered her head, overwhelmed.
Alejandro looked at Elena’s name carved into stone.
For years, he had believed moving forward meant leaving Elena behind.
Now he understood that love did not demand forgetting.
It demanded living honestly with what had been given.
He reached for Lucía’s hand.
She allowed him to take it.
“We should let Lucía decide what forever means,” he said.
