Chapter 13 - The Last Recording

Rachel demanded a lawyer.

Federal agents arranged it.

She surrendered at a church parking lot on the east side of Columbus.

No weapons.

No dramatic chase.

Just a frightened forty-two-year-old woman carrying a laptop bag.

I expected evil.

Instead, Rachel looked exhausted.

Like someone who had spent her entire life cleaning up after another person’s darkness.

She was Leonard Pike’s daughter.

But she didn’t call him Dad.

Not once.

She called him Leonard.

Inside the federal building, she explained that Leonard had raised her to believe Thomas Hayes destroyed their family.

Took his company.

Ruined his reputation.

Left them poor.

“For years, I believed everything he said.”

“What changed?” I asked.

“Your father.”

I stared at her.

Rachel had secretly met Dad six months before he died.

Dad showed her records proving Leonard had hidden millions overseas while telling his own family they were broke.

“He used us too,” Rachel said.

“Why didn’t you help Dad?”

“I was scared.”

The same sentence.

Again.

Fear had built this entire disaster.

Rachel began secretly copying Leonard’s files.

After Dad died, she kept them.

Then years later she took the job with Whitaker because she believed Riverstone evidence might still exist.

“Why steal Mom’s money?”

Rachel looked ashamed.

“Leonard ordered me to.”

“So you did it.”

“Yes.”

“At least you admit it.”

She flinched.

Emily asked, “Why offer me two hundred thousand?”

“To see whether you could be bought.”

“And when I said no?”

“I told Leonard you were dangerous.”

Emily almost laughed.

“I was dangerous because I wouldn’t take a bribe?”

“To him, yes.”

Rachel turned the laptop around.

“I brought everything.”

Recordings.

Bank ledgers.

Emails.

Names of accomplices.

Enough to bury Leonard Pike.

But one audio file mattered more than the rest.

Recorded the night Dad died.

Not from the warehouse camera.

From a device inside Dad’s jacket.

His voice was clear.

“Leonard, this ends tonight.”

Pike laughed.

“You’ve said that before.”

Then Nathan.

“I’ll testify.”

Pike threatened him.

Mom cried.

Dad confronted her about the affair.

The pain in his voice made me close my eyes.

Then Dad said something unexpected.

“Margaret, I forgive you.”

Mom began sobbing beside me.

On the recording, Dad continued.

“But you need to tell Daniel the truth.”

Then Pike mentioned Emily’s accident.

Dad refused the blackmail.

Pike threatened all of us.

The argument escalated.

Mom begged everyone to stop.

Then Dad said:

“My chest.”

Nathan rushed toward him.

Pike’s voice changed.

“What’s wrong?”

Dad collapsed.

Nathan shouted for an ambulance.

And then—

Mom screamed.

“His pills!”

There was confusion.

Nathan said, “What about them?”

Mom confessed she had replaced them.

Pike sounded genuinely surprised.

“What did you do?”

Mom answered, “You told me to!”

Pike said:

“I told you to ask another doctor. I never told you to stop his medication.”

The room went silent.

My mother covered her face.

“He’s lying,” I said.

Rachel shook her head.

“Not entirely.”

Leonard had manipulated Mom.

He had sent articles.

Suggested Dad’s medicine was harmful.

Connected her with a fake wellness consultant.

But he never explicitly told her to remove the medication.

He was careful.

Always careful.

He created the fear.

Mom made the choice.

Legally, proving murder would be difficult.

Morally, none of us needed a jury.

Then the recording continued.

Dad was still conscious.

Barely.

He whispered, “Call Daniel.”

Nathan reached for a phone.

Dad stopped him.

“No.”

His breathing became shallow.

“Not like this.”

Then he said something I had never heard from anyone.

“Tell him I was proud.”

My vision blurred.

Dad’s final coherent words had been about me.

Nathan sat beside me, crying silently.

Then another voice appeared.

Not Pike.

Not Mom.

Not Nathan.

A woman.

“Move away from him.”

Rachel paused the audio.

“Who is that?” Mitchell asked.

Rachel looked at me.

“Dr. Evelyn Ward.”

I frowned.

Dad’s cardiologist.

She had treated him for almost seven years.

“What was she doing there?”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“She worked for Leonard.”

The recording resumed.

Dr. Ward entered.

Checked Dad.

Nathan begged her to call an ambulance.

She refused.

“Why?” I whispered.

Then the answer came through the speaker.

Pike said:

“If he reaches a hospital, they’ll test his blood.”

Ward replied:

“I know.”

Mom screamed.

“You said you could help him!”

Ward administered something.

Dad’s breathing changed.

Slower.

Then stopped.

The room froze.

Rachel looked at me.

“Leonard may not have caused your father’s heart attack.”

May you like

She swallowed.

“But Dr. Ward made sure he didn’t survive it.”
