Chapter 15 - A New Christmas Tradition

One year after the Christmas dinner that changed everything, the snow fell softly over Denver once again.

The long dining room table at Grandma Evelyn’s Victorian house was set for dinner. Warm light filled the room, and the scent of roasted ham and fresh pine filled the air.

Sitting around the table were the people who had learned the true meaning of family: cousin Brittany, looking radiant and genuine in a simple sweater; Rosa, smiling as she served fresh dinner rolls; David Callahan and his wife; and three young scholarship recipients from the Whitaker Foundation who had nowhere else to go for the holidays.

I sat at the head of the long dining table, wearing Grandma’s favorite red cardigan over my shoulders.

"A toast!" Brittany stood up, holding her glass of sparkling cider high with a bright, humble smile. "To Grandma Evelyn... who taught us that the greatest gifts in life can never be written on a check."

"To Evelyn!" everyone cheered, clinking their glasses together in warm, joyous celebration.

After dinner, as the guests gathered around the piano in the living room to sing carols, I walked out onto the snow-covered front porch.

The night wind was cold, but inside my chest, I felt a deep, unwavering warmth. I reached into the pocket of my coat and pulled out the crisp, white piece of paper I had kept framed in my office for an entire year.

Pay to the order of: Claire Whitaker. Five million dollars.

I looked up at the clear, starry winter sky, feeling Grandma Evelyn’s calm blue eyes watching over me from above.

I didn't need to cash the check. I never did.

Because the true fortune she had handed me that night wasn't the five million dollars.
