Chapter 13 - The Corporate Audit

While Michael was dismantling his personal life, Victoria Sterling was facing a far more dangerous threat to her professional empire.

In high-stakes public relations, client confidence is fragile. When Sterling & Vance PR issued a false statement accusing me of photoshopping venue documents—only to be forced into an embarrassing public retraction hours later—their corporate clients began asking uncomfortable questions.

On Monday morning, Arthur Vance called me into his executive office at Apex Media Group.

"Take a seat, Sarah," Arthur said, gesturing toward the leather armchairs across from his mahogany desk. He picked up a tablet and slid it across the glass surface toward me.

On the screen was an industry trade magazine headline:

MAJOR PHARMACEUTICAL AND REAL ESTATE CONGLOMERATES INITIATE AUDITS OF STERLING & VANCE PR FOLLOWING ETHICS SCANDAL

"Victoria's firm is bleeding," Arthur said, a calm, analytical tone in his voice. "Three of their major retainer clients have initiated third-party compliance audits into Sterling & Vance's billing practices and media ethics."

"Why billing practices?" I asked, looking up from the tablet.

"Because," Arthur smiled faintly, "when a PR firm gets caught publicly fabricating statements to cover up a partner's family scandal, corporate board members start wondering what else they've been fudging on their monthly retainer invoices. Victoria Sterling built her firm on an image of untouchable perfection. Now that the veneer is cracked, her clients are looking at the fine print."

My desk phone rang an hour later. It was Victoria Sterling's direct corporate line.

I answered, keeping my tone perfectly neutral. "Sarah Bennett."

"Sarah," Victoria’s voice came through the line. The arrogance and aristocratic venom that had defined her for years were completely gone. She sounded tired, desperate, and defeated. "I’m calling to make a professional request."

"I'm listening, Victoria."

"My firm is being audited by two of our primary corporate accounts," Victoria said, her breath heavy over the receiver. "Their legal teams are reviewing the settlement agreement we signed with Apex two weeks ago. They want confirmation that all legal disputes between our firms have been fully resolved and that no further misconduct allegations exist."

"The settlement agreement is legally binding, Victoria," I stated calmly. "As long as Brooke complies with the terms and your firm refrains from making further defamatory comments, Apex has no reason to issue additional statements."

"Brooke is an absolute wreck, Sarah," Victoria pleaded, her voice cracking slightly. "Michael’s lawyer served her with annulment papers on Friday. She hasn't left her room in three days. She’s talking about moving to Europe to escape the public embarrassment. Is there really no way to convince Michael to settle this quietly through a private divorce rather than a public annulment filing?"

I leaned back in my executive chair, looking out over the city skyline.

"Victoria," I said softly, "your daughter chose to make this public the moment she put a handwritten note on a seating chart in front of a hundred guests. She thought she could humiliate an eight-year-old child and hide behind your firm's power. Michael's decision to annul the marriage is his legal right. I have no control over his choices, just as you had no control over Brooke's cruelty."

Silence hung over the line for a long, heavy moment.

"We are paying for her mistake, Sarah," Victoria whispered. "My entire life's work is crumbling because of one weekend."

"No, Victoria," I corrected her gently, but with absolute clarity. "Your life's work is crumbling because when your daughter did something terrible, instead of holding her accountable, you helped her lie to cover it up. That wasn't Brooke's mistake. That was yours."

I ended the call without waiting for a response, setting the phone receiver down on the cradle.

The consequences of arrogance had finally arrived, delivered not by malice, but by the relentless weight of the truth.
