CHAPTER 8 Vivian Blackwood’s Last Move

Caroline did not act alone.

Investigators discovered that a former Blackwood security director had helped her escape. Two company drivers, a private nurse and a retired police officer were also involved.

The Blackwood influence had weakened, but it had not vanished.

Lena, Richard and Miriam were moved into protective locations.

Ethan refused protection until an agent reminded him that becoming another victim would not help anyone.

Graham survived the poisoning but remained too weak to testify.

Vivian sat in jail, publicly denying any connection to Caroline.

Privately, she requested a meeting with Lena.

Miriam advised against it.

Lena agreed anyway.

They met through reinforced glass.

Vivian wore a plain beige prison uniform. Without diamonds, styled hair and a ballroom full of admirers, she seemed smaller.

But her eyes remained sharp.

“You look tired,” Vivian said.

“You look exactly where you belong.”

Vivian smiled.

“Do you believe a cell removes power?”

“No. I believe truth does.”

“Truth is only a story supported by enough important people.”

“That may be how your family survived.”

“It is how every family like ours survives.”

“Ours are not alike.”

Vivian leaned closer to the glass.

“Your father built an empire by purchasing distressed companies and removing their leaders. Do you imagine every family he displaced deserved it?”

“No.”

The answer surprised Vivian.

Lena continued.

“I’m not here to claim my father is perfect. I’m here because your daughter is threatening people.”

“My daughter is frightened.”

“She poisoned Graham.”

“Can you prove it?”

“She threatened us.”

“Caroline has always been emotional.”

“You trained her to confuse cruelty with loyalty.”

Vivian’s smile faded.

“You came here because you need something.”

“I need Caroline’s location.”

“And what will you give me?”

“Nothing.”

“Then we have nothing to discuss.”

Lena stood.

Vivian tapped the glass.

“There is one thing you have not understood.”

Lena paused.

“Caroline is not trying to save me. She is trying to replace me.”

“Then you should be afraid.”

“I am not afraid of my children.”

“That is because you never loved them enough to see them clearly.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

Lena left.

As she reached the corridor, Vivian called through the speaker.

“Grace was pregnant when she died.”

Lena stopped.

The room seemed to tilt.

Vivian watched her reaction.

“Your father never told you?”

Lena slowly returned to the glass.

“You’re lying.”

“She was twelve weeks along.”

“How would you know?”

“Because she called Graham three days before the accident.”

Lena’s pulse hammered.

“What did she want?”

“To tell him she had found new evidence.”

“That has nothing to do with a pregnancy.”

“She also told him she was leaving Richard.”

Lena stared at her.

Vivian smiled again.

“There are always more truths, Helena.”

Richard admitted the pregnancy that evening.

He had known.

Grace had planned to surprise Lena after the first trimester.

“She was not leaving me,” he said.

“Did she call Graham?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She believed she had located a witness who could prove Arthur Voss ordered Harold Pike’s death.”

“What happened to the witness?”

“He vanished after her accident.”

“Was Mom’s accident really an accident?”

Richard looked destroyed.

“The police found no evidence otherwise.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No,” he whispered. “I never believed it was.”

Lena walked away from him.

Every truth arrived only after someone else forced him to release it.

That night, Ethan called from protective custody.

“Caroline contacted me.”

“What did she say?”

“She wants to meet.”

“No.”

“She says she has proof about your mother’s accident.”

“That is bait.”

“I know.”

“Then don’t go.”

“She will target Richard again if I refuse.”

“We involve the agents.”

“She said she’ll disappear if she sees anyone.”

Lena closed her eyes.

“Ethan, this is what your family does. They create a threat and convince you that obedience is the only way to protect someone.”

“I know.”

“Then break the pattern.”

He was silent.

Finally, he said, “I sent the location to the agents before calling you.”

Lena exhaled.

It was a small choice.

But it was the choice he had failed to make in the ballroom.

The meeting location was an abandoned Blackwood concrete plant.

Federal agents surrounded the property covertly.

Ethan entered wearing a transmitter.

Caroline waited beside an industrial mixer.

She held a laptop in one hand and a pistol in the other.

“You brought them,” she said immediately.

Ethan stopped.

“No.”

“You always were a terrible liar.”

She fired at an overhead light.

Agents moved closer but held their positions.

Caroline placed the laptop on a concrete barrier.

“This contains the traffic-control records from the night Grace Vale died.”

“Why do you have them?”

“Mother kept everything.”

“Did she cause the crash?”

Caroline laughed.

“Mother didn’t need to.”

“Who did?”

“Our father.”

Ethan went still.

Caroline opened a video file.

It showed an old interview with a Blackwood driver. He claimed Graham had ordered him to force Grace’s vehicle off the road and recover documents from her car.

“Where did you get this?”

“Mother recorded his confession as insurance.”

“Then give it to the police.”

“And lose the only thing keeping her from sacrificing me?”

“She already sacrificed you.”

Caroline’s expression twisted.

“You don’t know her.”

“I know she left you to face the mansion fire alone.”

“That was strategy.”

“She told investigators you were unstable.”

“She was protecting the family.”

“No. She was protecting herself.”

Caroline raised the gun.

“You sound like Lena.”

“She told me the truth.”

“She destroyed us.”

“We destroyed ourselves.”

Caroline screamed and fired.

The bullet struck Ethan in the side.

Agents stormed the plant.

Caroline ran toward the mixer platform with the laptop.

Lena, watching from a command vehicle, saw her climb higher.

An agent reached Ethan.

Another ordered Caroline to drop the weapon.

She held the laptop over the open mixer.

“One more step and everything disappears!”

Lena left the vehicle before anyone could stop her.

She entered the plant and looked up.

“Caroline!”

Caroline aimed the gun at her.

“This is your fault!”

“No,” Lena said. “But I know why you need it to be.”

“Shut up.”

“You spent your life earning love from a woman who only rewarded obedience.”

“She loved me.”

“She used you.”

“She made me strong.”

“She made you alone.”

Caroline’s eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan chose you.”

“He chose the truth.”

“He betrayed us.”

“He stopped becoming her.”

Caroline looked toward Ethan, bleeding on the concrete below.

For one moment, she lowered the gun.

Then Vivian’s voice came from the laptop.

A scheduled recording began playing.

“If you are hearing this, Caroline, then you have failed to contain the situation.”

Caroline stared at the screen.

Vivian continued.

“You must destroy every file and accept sole responsibility. The family name can survive one unstable daughter. It cannot survive me.”

Caroline’s face collapsed.

The truth arrived in her mother’s own voice.

She dropped the pistol.

Agents climbed the platform and took her into custody.

The laptop was recovered.

Ethan survived surgery.

The video implicated Graham in Grace’s death.

But when investigators questioned him, Graham gave a different account.

He admitted ordering the driver to follow Grace and retrieve documents.

He denied ordering the crash.

“The driver acted when she refused to stop,” Graham said.

“You created the danger,” Lena replied.

“Yes.”

“My mother and unborn sibling died because you wanted documents.”

Graham began crying.

“Yes.”

“Why should anyone believe you now?”

“They shouldn’t.”

He signed a full confession.

The final Blackwood defense collapsed.

But before trial, Miriam discovered that Vivian had made one last move.

She had transferred nearly forty million dollars into a charitable foundation weeks before the engagement party.

The foundation’s beneficiary was Lena.

If prosecutors did not understand why, the transfer could make it appear that Lena had secretly accepted Blackwood money.

Vivian had constructed the perfect lie:

May you like

That Lena had orchestrated the scandal for payment and control.

And the documents bore Lena’s electronic signature.
