Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Manor

The news that Arthur Vance was filing criminal charges against his own son detonated like a nuclear bomb within the family.

By Tuesday evening, my parents’ suburban estate—the grand brick house where I had grown up feeling like a ghost—turned into the staging ground for a final, desperate showdown.

I hadn't intended to go there. But at 7:30 PM, my mother called me, screaming hysterically over the sound of breaking glass and shouting men. Marcus had stormed into the house, demanding that Arthur withdraw the legal filing before the District Attorney took official notice.

When I pulled up in my black town car, two police cruisers were already parked in the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the manicured lawn. Neighbors were standing on their porches, whispering and pointing.

I walked through the front door. The grand foyer—where my mother used to host Christmas parties—was in chaos.

A crystal vase lay shattered on the marble tile. Marcus was standing near the fireplace, his shirt untucked, his eyes wild and bloodshot, being held back by two police officers. Sienna was sitting on the stairs, sobbing loudly, while my mother wrung her hands in horror. Arthur stood near his study door, pale but resolute, holding a stack of legal papers.

"There she is!" Marcus screamed the moment he saw me walk through the door. "There’s the viper! Look at her! She’s destroying this family because she didn't get to go to Hawaii!"

The police officers looked at me, confused by the absurd statement.

"Marcus, shut up," I said softly, stepping into the center of the room.

"I won't shut up!" he roared, thrashing against the officers' grip. "You think you’re so high and mighty with your secret millions?! You’re nothing! You’re just the pathetic little girl who sat in her room coding while the rest of us actually lived!"

"I spent those years building something real, Marcus," I replied calmly. "While you spent those years living off Dad's reputation and stealing money to pretend you were a big shot. Look at you now. You’re thirty-eight years old, being restrained by the police in our parents’ living room because you got caught stealing from your own father."

"Elena, please!" my mother cried out, rushing over to grab my arm. "Tell the police it was a mistake! He’s your brother! He has children! Think of Leo and Maya! Do you want their father to go to prison?!"

I gently but firmly pulled my arm out of my mother’s grasp.

"Mom, Marcus didn't think of Leo and Maya when he took almost two million dollars from the company that pays for their private school tuition," I said. "He put his own lifestyle ahead of his children’s future. Why should I care more about his kids than he does?"

"You heartless monster!" Sienna spat from the staircase, looking up at me with pure hatred. "You were always jealous of us! You were jealous that Marcus had a real family, that he had a life, while you had nothing but your stupid computer!"

I turned my head slowly to look at Sienna.

"Sienna, tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, Sterling Crest’s legal team is filing a civil lawsuit against Crestview Management—your shell company," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Every asset registered under that business name, including your Porsche and your beach house in the Hamptons, will be frozen by court order before noon. I suggest you stop screaming at me and start looking for a good defense lawyer."

Sienna’s face drained of color. Her jaw worked silently, but no sound came out. She collapsed back onto the stairs, burying her face in her hands.

"Officer," I said, turning to the lead policeman. "Mr. Marcus Vance has active trespass warnings issued by Vance Construction and is currently under corporate investigation for grand larceny. My father, the owner of this residence, wishes to press charges for property damage and illegal entry."

The officer looked at my father. Arthur swallowed hard, looked at Marcus’s rage-filled face, and then looked at me.

For the first time in his life, Arthur Vance made the right decision.

"Press the charges," Arthur said, his voice firm despite the grief in his eyes. "Take him away."

"Dad! No! Dad, you can't do this!" Marcus shrieked as the officers forced his arms behind his back and clicked the handcuffs into place. "Elena! You bitch! I’ll kill you! You hear me?! I’ll ruin you!"

The police dragged Marcus out the front door, his violent screams echoing across the quiet suburban neighborhood until the cruiser doors slammed shut.
