Chapter 11 - The Halston Gala

The ballroom occupied the top floor of Halston Tower.

Crystal chandeliers reflected across walls of black glass. Politicians, bankers, judges, and corporate executives stood beneath banners celebrating seventy-five years of trust and integrity.

Some of the people in that room were victims.

Others were named in my father’s ledger.

Gregory guided me through the crowd with one hand pressed against my lower back. From a distance, we looked affectionate.

Up close, his fingers felt like restraints.

Agent Bell had been taken to a private holding room. Lydia claimed Daniel had escaped the first attempt to capture him, but her people were searching the building.

I had no way to know whether he was alive.

“Smile,” Gregory whispered.

“I am smiling.”

“Not like that.”

“How should a properly disciplined wife smile?”

His hand tightened.

Before he could answer, Lydia approached.

She wore a dark red gown and Alexander Halston’s wedding ring on a chain around her neck.

“People are watching,” she said.

“Then perhaps Gregory should stop bruising his wife in public.”

She looked at him.

He released me.

Lydia kissed both my cheeks.

“To everyone here, you are a devoted couple facing an unfortunate private misunderstanding.”

“And after tonight?”

“That depends on your cooperation.”

She led us toward a raised stage.

At the center stood Martin Shaw.

He had shaved his beard and dyed his hair, but there was no mistaking him. The man my father trusted smiled at me as though we were meeting for dinner.

“My condolences regarding Margaret’s home,” he said.

“You tried to burn her inside it.”

“Paul panicked.”

“You were driving the SUV.”

“Details become complicated under pressure.”

“Where is the second key?”

Martin touched his jacket pocket.

“Safe.”

Music faded.

Lydia stepped to the microphone and welcomed the guests.

She spoke about legacy, family, and the sacred responsibility of protecting clients. Applause filled the ballroom.

Then she introduced Gregory and me.

We walked onto the stage.

Hundreds of phones and cameras pointed toward us.

Gregory began the prepared statement.

“Three nights ago, my wife and I experienced a private disagreement that has been deliberately misrepresented.”

He turned toward me.

“Evelyn would like to clarify what happened.”

A teleprompter displayed the words Lydia expected me to say.

I WAS UNDER EXTREME STRESS.

I MISUNDERSTOOD MY HUSBAND’S ACTIONS.

GREGORY NEVER INTENDED TO HARM ME.

I stepped toward the microphone.

The room became silent.

“My husband is correct,” I began. “There has been a misunderstanding.”

Gregory relaxed.

“The misunderstanding,” I continued, “was his belief that I would protect him.”

The teleprompter stopped.

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

Gregory reached for my arm.

I moved away.

“Three days after our wedding, Gregory kicked over my dining table because dinner was late. He demanded control of my money and threatened to hit me.”

Lydia signaled to security.

The ballroom doors closed.

Large screens behind the stage suddenly displayed the security recording from my condo.

Gregory’s voice thundered through the speakers.

A STUBBORN WIFE NEEDS TO BE PROPERLY DISCIPLINED.

Guests turned toward him.

His face drained of color.

“How are you doing this?” he whispered.

I had not activated the screens.

Daniel had.

The recording ended.

Another video began.

Martin sat inside Lydia’s townhouse discussing my father’s murder.

Then came financial records, account numbers, photographs, and names from the Widowmaker archive.

Daniel had found another way into Halston’s network.

Lydia lunged toward the control panel.

Nothing responded.

Martin grabbed me from behind.

“Give me the first key.”

Gregory blocked him.

“Don’t touch her.”

For one strange second, husband and accomplice faced each other.

Martin laughed.

“You still think Lydia plans to leave you anything?”

Gregory looked toward his mother.

“What is he talking about?”

Lydia said nothing.

Martin removed the chip from his pocket.

“The trust doesn’t make Gregory rich. It proves Alexander disinherited him.”

Gregory’s expression cracked.

Alexander Halston had placed controlling ownership into the victim trust. Once the archive opened, Halston’s assets would be redistributed, and Daniel would receive voting authority as the only competent surviving heir.

Gregory had married me believing he would recover his inheritance.

In reality, his mother intended to use him and discard him.

“You knew?” he asked Lydia.

“You were never capable of running this company.”

“I did everything you asked.”

“You failed at everything I asked.”

The cruelty in her voice silenced him.

Martin dragged me toward a private elevator.

I drove my heel down onto his foot and struck his throat with the back of my head. He released me long enough for Gregory to tackle him.

The chip flew across the stage.

Lydia reached it first.

Daniel’s voice came through the speakers.

“Combine the keys, Evelyn.”

Lydia held the chip in her fist.

“You want it?” she shouted. “Come take it.”

She ran toward the elevator.

I followed.

The doors closed before Gregory could enter.

Lydia and I descended alone.

She removed a small pistol from her handbag.

“You have your father’s arrogance,” she said.

“And you have his blood on your hands.”

“Your father could have lived. All he had to do was stop.”

“He knew you stole Daniel.”

“I saved Daniel from your mother.”

“You stole a newborn child.”

“I protected my family.”

“No. You protected Gregory’s inheritance.”

Her expression hardened.

“You think you’re better than me because you fight back. Every woman fights. The intelligent ones learn which sacrifices keep them alive.”

“You sacrificed everyone except yourself.”

The elevator stopped beneath the building.

The doors opened onto a private vault.

Agent Bell was tied to a chair inside.

Beside him stood my mother.

Martin’s missing accomplice held a gun to her head.

Lydia smiled.

“You have one key. I have the other.”

May you like

She pointed her weapon at my mother.

“Only one of you is leaving with both.”
