Chapter 7 - The Hidden Ledger

The silence in the hallway outside Mediation Room 302 was deafening.

Through the glass panel of the consultation room door, I could see Monica frantically waving her hands, screaming at Pendelton, while Richard sat with his head buried in his hands. Dylan was pacing back and forth like a trapped animal.

Ten minutes later, Pendelton opened the door and walked back into the mediation room alone. His posture had completely deflated; his slick confidence was gone.

"Your Honor," Pendelton said, his voice raspy. "My clients wish to request a seven-day continuance to review the financial documentation provided by the plaintiff."

"A continuance?" Sarah Vance countered immediately. "Your Honor, the subject property is currently occupied by individuals who have actively attempted to conceal evidence and extort my client. We object to any delay unless protective measures are put in place."

Judge Harris looked over his spectacles at Pendelton. "I am granting a five-day stay, Mr. Pendelton. But under two strict conditions. First: an injunction is immediately placed on all bank accounts belonging to Richard Bennett, Monica Bennett, and Miller Holdings LLC. Second: your clients will pay $5,000 into an escrow account by 5:00 PM today to cover the plaintiff’s interim legal costs."

"Five thousand by 5:00 PM?" Pendelton gasped. "Your Honor, that's—"

"That is my order, counsel," Judge Harris cut him off sharply. "If the money is not in escrow by 5:00 PM, I will grant the plaintiff’s motion for immediate forced sale of the property without further hearing. We are adjourned."

As we left the courtroom, Monica caught up to us in the marble corridor. Her mask of civilized grievance was completely gone.

"You think you're so smart, don't you?" she hissed, her voice vibrating with pure rage. "You think you can ruin my family and walk away laughing?"

"You ruined your own family, Monica," I said, stopping to look her dead in the eye. "When you threw me out over a bedroom, you thought I had nowhere to go. You thought I was helpless. You forgot that everything you enjoy in that house was built on my mother's foundation."

"Your mother was a pathetic weakling!" Monica spat, stepping into my space. "And your father never loved her! He was sleeping with me two years before she died!"

The corridor seemed to freeze.

Richard, who was walking a few paces behind her, froze in his tracks, his eyes wide with horror. "Monica... shut up!" he yelled.

"Why should I shut up?" Monica screamed, turning on Richard. "She’s taking everything! Tell her the truth, Richard! Tell her how you spent her precious mother’s money on my debts before she was even in the ground!"

I stared at Richard. The realization hit me like a physical blow.

It wasn't just tax fraud. It wasn't just about mortgage payments. Richard had been embezzling money from my mother’s medical trust fund while she was undergoing chemotherapy—money meant for her treatment—to cover Monica’s failed boutique business ventures years ago.

My hands trembled inside my suit pockets, but I forced my voice to remain completely steady.

"Thank you, Monica," I said quietly, holding up my phone, where the voice memo app was still recording. "That confession is going straight to the executor of my mother's estate."

May you like

Monica’s eyes widened in realization. She reached out to grab my phone, but Sarah Vance smoothly stepped in front of her.

"Touch my client, Mrs. Bennett," Sarah warned, "and the deputy at the end of this hall will arrest you for assault before you reach the front doors."
