Chapter 5 - The Night Dominic Marino Finally Became Afraid

Dominic reached the hospital before the elevator doors had fully opened.

He ran.

Dominic Marino did not run.

He had spent his adult life making other people hurry.

That morning, he ran through the maternity floor with his tie hanging loose and terror on his face.

Margaret met him outside labor and delivery.

“How is she?”

“Her blood pressure is high.”

“The baby?”

“They’re monitoring her.”

Dominic looked toward the doors.

“Does Carrie want me?”

Margaret studied him.

Months earlier, he would have demanded entry.

Now he asked.

“I don’t know.”

Inside, Carrie gripped the bed rail.

Dr. Bennett spoke calmly.

“Caroline, your blood pressure is becoming dangerous.”

Carrie breathed through another contraction.

“What are you saying?”

“We may need to move quickly.”

“C-section?”

“Possibly.”

Carrie nodded.

Then fear finally broke through.

“Is my baby going to be okay?”

“We are doing everything we can.”

Carrie turned her face away.

She wanted someone.

Not Margaret.

Not Grace.

Not a nurse.

She hated herself for knowing exactly who.

“Is Dominic here?”

The nurse looked toward the door.

“Yes.”

Carrie closed her eyes.

“Bring him.”

Dominic entered thirty seconds later.

He stopped beside the door.

Carrie looked exhausted.

Frightened.

Beautiful.

He wanted to cross the room and hold her.

He did not move until she extended her hand.

Then he went to her.

Carrie gripped his fingers.

“I’m scared.”

Three words.

Dominic’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“What if something happens?”

“It won’t.”

“You can’t promise that.”

He swallowed.

“You’re right.”

Carrie looked at him.

No false promises.

Not anymore.

Dominic bent closer.

“But I can promise I’m staying.”

Carrie squeezed his hand.

“Okay.”

For the next three hours, he stayed.

When contractions intensified, he counted breaths.

When Carrie became nauseated, he held the basin.

When doctors spoke, he listened.

When she became frightened, he did not tell her to calm down.

He simply remained.

At 6:41 a.m., Dr. Bennett made the decision.

“We need to deliver.”

Everything moved quickly.

Dominic changed into surgical clothing.

Carrie was wheeled toward the operating room.

Then a nurse stopped him.

“You’ll wait here until we’re ready.”

The doors closed.

Dominic stood alone.

For seven minutes, he could do nothing.

No money.

No influence.

No command.

He could not protect Carrie.

He could not protect his daughter.

He could only wait.

Then the nurse opened the door.

“Mr. Marino?”

He entered.

At 7:18 a.m., a cry filled the operating room.

Dominic stopped breathing.

The doctor lifted a tiny baby.

“Congratulations.”

Carrie began sobbing.

Dominic did too.

Their daughter was small.

Pink.

Furious.

Perfect.

When the nurse placed her against Carrie’s chest, Carrie stared down at her as though the entire universe had suddenly become five pounds and eleven ounces.

“Hi,” Carrie whispered.

Dominic stood beside them.

He did not touch the baby until Carrie looked up.

“Do you want to?”

His face crumpled.

“Yes.”

He placed one trembling finger against his daughter’s tiny hand.

She grabbed it.

Dominic Marino had negotiated billion-dollar deals without blinking.

That tiny hand destroyed him.

“What’s her name?” the nurse asked.

Carrie looked at Dominic.

They had discussed names months earlier.

Before Vanessa.

Before the bedroom.

Before everything broke.

Carrie whispered, “Eleanor Grace.”

Dominic smiled through tears.

“Ellie.”

Carrie nodded.

“Ellie.”

For several hours, the world became quiet.

No lawyers.

No audits.

No Vanessa.

No divorce.

Only Carrie, Dominic, and their daughter.

But happiness did not erase reality.

Two days later, Dominic prepared to leave the hospital.

Carrie watched him put on his coat.

“You’re going?”

He looked surprised.

“I thought you needed rest.”

“I do.”

He hesitated.

“Do you want me to stay?”

Carrie looked at Ellie sleeping in the bassinet.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic nodded.

“Then I’ll go.”

Carrie looked at him.

“You’re different.”

He gave a sad smile.

“No.”

She frowned.

Dominic looked toward their daughter.

“I’m trying to become different.”

That answer stayed with her.

The divorce proceedings continued.

Dominic did not contest them.

He gave Carrie everything she requested.

Shared custody structured around Ellie’s medical needs.

Financial independence.

No restrictions on her residence.

No attempt to use the company as leverage.

When Grace informed Carrie, she seemed almost disappointed.

“He isn’t fighting.”

Carrie looked down at Ellie.

“That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t leave.”

“No.”

Grace smiled gently.

“It means maybe he finally understands that loving someone does not mean owning the outcome.”

Carrie signed the preliminary agreement.

Dominic signed the same afternoon.

Neither knew that Vanessa Langford was preparing one final act of revenge.

From jail, through her attorney, she released hundreds of private messages.

Some were between her and Dominic.

Some were business communications.

And one message, dated eleven months earlier, changed everything.

It appeared to show Dominic writing:

If Carrie ever becomes a problem, I’ll handle her.

The media exploded.

Carrie stared at the message on her phone.

Her blood went cold.

May you like

Because eleven months earlier, she had already been pregnant.

And suddenly every question she thought she had answered returned at once.
