CHAPTER 2: The Silent Cleanout

The heavy oak front door slammed shut, the echo reverberating through the empty penthouse.

The moment the elevator chimes signaled their departure, the fragile, sick old woman Thomas thought he left behind vanished. I walked over to the nightstand, my steps steady and firm. The medical bills he thought were draining our savings? Paid months ago from a separate, private account.

I pulled out a sleek, black burner phone from the hidden compartment of my drawer and dialed a number I knew by heart.

"Diane," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the room. "He finally did it. He emptied the joint operational accounts just now. I got the bank alert."

On the other end of the line, Diane Vance—the fiercest forensic divorce attorney on the East Coast—let out a low, satisfied laugh. "The idiot actually fell for the bait. Did he take the jewelry too?"

"The Paris bracelet is on her wrist," I said, looking out at the city light.

"Perfect. That’s grand larceny added to the marital asset dissipation," Diane said, the sound of papers rustling through the speaker. "He thinks he left you with nothing because he checked the public balances. He has no idea that two years ago, when I first uncovered his offshore shell companies, we quietly legally mirrored and transferred the core assets of Grant Holdings into the private trust under your maiden name."

Thomas was a genius at marketing, but he hated paperwork. For three decades, I was the one who signed the corporate filings, the proxy votes, and the banking resolutions. He thought my signature was just a formality. He forgot that a formality is what dictates the law.

"Is the freeze order ready?" I asked.

"The judge signs it at 9:00 AM tomorrow," Diane replied. "By noon, Thomas Grant’s black Amex will be declined. By 1:00 PM, his access to the corporate headquarters will be revoked. Eleanor, you aren't just taking half. You're taking everything."

"Good," I said, looking at my reflection in the dark glass. "Then let the show begin."
