Chapter 10 - The Golden Hour
Spring arrived in Pittsburgh with an explosion of emerald green leaves and blossoming dogwood trees that lined the historic streets of Shadyside.
Emily was now six months old—a thriving, endlessly curious little girl with bright, expressive eyes and a laugh that sounded like tiny silver bells. She could sit up unassisted, babble in long, enthusiastic syllables of pure gibberish, and grab anything within arm’s reach—especially my architectural pens and expensive drafting paper.
Our firm, Chloe Miller Design & Architecture, had officially expanded, taking on two junior designers and securing a permanent feature profile in Mid-Atlantic Architectural Digest.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in late April, Rachel and I sat on the sunlit back patio of our Victorian home. Emily was sitting on a thick quilted blanket on the grass, aggressively attacking a plush teddy bear while trying to figure out how gravity worked.
Rachel took a sip of iced lemonade, watching Emily with a fond, auntial smile before turning her gaze to me.
“You know, looking at you right now compared to the woman who walked out of that Columbus kitchen six months ago... it’s like looking at two completely different human beings,” Rachel remarked softly.
I smiled, setting my glass down on the wrought-iron patio table and leaning back in my chair.
“The woman in Columbus was surviving,” I said quietly. “This woman is living.”
“And to think,” Rachel laughed, a bright, musical sound that carried across the yard, “it all started because a grown man thought fifteen dollars was a generous parting gift.”
I joined in her laughter, looking out across the emerald grass at my daughter, who had successfully tackled the teddy bear and was now giggling triumphantly at her own victory.
