Chapter 10 - The Collapse of the Mercer Empire

By Monday morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper that housed the headquarters of Mercer Holdings in downtown Dallas looked less like a corporate monument and more like a fortress under siege.

A dozen marked Federal Bureau of Investigation vans blocked the building’s grand entrance. Federal agents, clad in dark blue jackets, streamed through the lobby carrying clear plastic evidence tubs, server hard drives, and boxed financial ledgers.

On the trading floor, monitors flickered frantically with plummeting stock tickers. As news broke that Grant Mercer had signed a full corporate forfeiture agreement in exchange for dropping capital conspiracy charges, institutional investors pulled out en masse. In less than two trading hours, Mercer Holdings lost 85% of its market capitalization.

Inside the corner executive office that Grant had once spent millions decorating with imported marble and leather, Evelyn stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows.

She wore a tailored navy silk wrap dress, her thirty-four-week pregnant bump prominently displayed. Beside her stood Arthur Hale and Miles Bennett, along with a team of court-appointed trustees.

"The board of directors formally voted to liquidate the entity thirty minutes ago, Ms. Hale," the chief restructuring trustee announced, handing Evelyn a digital tablet for signature. "The proceeds from the liquidation will be transferred directly into a court-monitored restitution fund to pay back the low-income families affected by Nighthawk’s illegal land acquisitions."

Evelyn took the stylus and signed her name with steady, unflinching precision.

"What about the employees, Miles?" Evelyn asked, turning to Grant’s former assistant.

"Every lower-level staff member and administrative worker will receive three months of full severance paid directly from the Hale Trust, just as you instructed," Miles said, a profound sense of relief washing over his face. "None of them will suffer for Grant's crimes."

Evelyn looked out over the skyline of Dallas. Six years ago, she had stood in this very room while Grant popped a bottle of vintage champagne, boasting that they were going to "own this city." She had watched him turn into a tyrant who believed money bought immunity from cruelty.

Now, his name was being scrubbed from the building’s polished granite façade downstairs. The stone masons’ chisels echoed up through the street noise—a rhythmic, metallic scraping erasing Grant Mercer’s legacy, letter by letter.

Suddenly, Arthur’s encrypted phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. Arthur picked it up, listened for three seconds, and his gray eyebrows pulled together into a sharp, dangerous line.

"When?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping an octave.

Evelyn turned around instantly, her heart skipping a beat. "Dad? What happened?"

Arthur lowered the phone, looking at Evelyn with a sudden, intense vigilance.

"Grant was being transferred from the county jail to the federal detention facility in Fort Worth twenty minutes ago," Arthur said carefully. "The transport vehicle was broadsided by an stolen construction truck on the highway interchange."

Evelyn’s hand flew to her stomach. "Did he escape?"

"Two guards were injured," Arthur replied, stepping closer to wrap a protective arm around her shoulders. "Grant managed to slip out of his restraints in the chaos and fled into the industrial corridor near the railyards. He’s on the run."
