Chapter 14 - The Last Secret in the Mansion

Three years after the night Alejandro discovered the bandages beneath Valeria's blanket, the Aranda mansion changed.

The locked rooms were opened.

The security gates became less intimidating.

The old chapel was restored.

Children's toys appeared in rooms where business meetings had once been held.

Elena ran through the hallways.

And Valeria was pregnant again.

This time, there were no secret doctors.

No hidden medical records.

No poisoned tea.

Alejandro attended every appointment.

Possibly too enthusiastically.

“You don't need to interrogate the ultrasound technician,” Valeria told him.

“I asked one question.”

“You asked seventeen.”

“They were relevant.”

“You asked whether the machine had backup power.”

“It was relevant.”

She laughed.

Their second pregnancy was healthy.

But one piece of unfinished business remained.

Esther.

She had rebuilt a quiet life outside Santa Barbara.

Alejandro visited occasionally.

Valeria more often.

One afternoon, Esther asked Alejandro to walk with her.

They reached the ocean.

She handed him a small envelope.

“What is this?”

“The last thing I've kept from you.”

Alejandro almost laughed.

“You understand why that sentence makes me nervous?”

“Yes.”

Inside was a photograph.

Tomas holding infant Alejandro.

On the back, Tomas had written:

My son. Not because he came from me. Because I chose him, and I hope one day he chooses what kind of man he becomes.

Alejandro stared at it.

“He knew from the beginning?”

“Almost.”

“Why didn't you give me this earlier?”

“Shame.”

At least she no longer lied.

Alejandro sat beside her.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

It was the first time he had called her that in years.

Her eyes filled.

“I can't make what you did disappear.”

“I know.”

“I can't pretend Valeria wasn't hurt.”

“I know.”

“And I will never understand why protecting a family name seemed more important than protecting the people in the family.”

Esther nodded.

“I know.”

He looked at the ocean.

“But Elena asks about her grandmother.”

Esther began crying.

“And I'm tired of teaching my daughter that people are either good or evil.”

He turned toward her.

“People can do terrible things and still choose to become better.”

Esther covered her mouth.

Alejandro continued.

“You don't get your old life back.”

“I don't want it.”

“But maybe you can be part of the new one.”

She nodded through tears.

“I'd like that.”

For the first time, Alejandro hugged his mother without pretending the past hadn't happened.

Forgiveness wasn't forgetting.

It wasn't excusing.

It was deciding that the wound would no longer control the future.

That evening, Alejandro returned home.

Valeria was standing in Tomas's old study.

Her hand rested against her stomach.

“You're smiling,” she said.

“So are you.”

“I have news.”

His expression changed immediately.

“What? Is something wrong?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Alejandro.”

“Sorry.”

She took his hand and placed it against her stomach.

“The doctor called.”

“And?”

“We're having a boy.”

Alejandro stared at her.

Then smiled.

“A boy.”

“Yes.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Do you have a name?”

Valeria nodded.

“Tomas.”

Alejandro couldn't speak.

So he held her.

And somewhere upstairs, Elena began yelling because Teresa had apparently committed the unforgivable crime of cutting her sandwich incorrectly.

Valeria laughed.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

This was family.

Not the mansion.

Not the company.

Not blood.

May you like

This.

And for the first time in his life, it was enough.
