Chapter 10 - The Table at Aurelia

One year after the night she collapsed on the marble, on a crisp, golden evening in late October, Aurelia was bathed in warm amber light.

The famous Midtown restaurant was closed to the public for a private anniversary celebration.

Soft classical jazz drifted from the grand piano near the arched front windows, where the rain tapped gently against the glass—the exact same October rain that had fallen twelve months earlier.

Sitting in the deep leather booth at the rear of the private dining room were Jonah and Stella Pierce.

The white damask tablecloth was set with crystal flutes of vintage champagne, fresh white gardenias, and porcelain plates lined with gold leaf.

Stella looked breathtaking in a midnight-navy silk wrap dress, her auburn hair pinned back with antique diamond combs, her emerald eyes glowing with health, peace, and absolute fulfillment. Resting against her left hand was the sapphire engagement ring and a simple, elegant platinum wedding band that bound her life to Jonah forever.

Sitting across from her was Jonah, looking magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo with an open collar, his dark eyes locked onto his wife with an unreserved, eternal devotion.

The waiter cleared their dinner plates, bowing respectfully as he retreated to the kitchen.

Jonah reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a thick manila envelope.

He set it gently on the center of the white tablecloth, right between their champagne glasses.

Stella looked at the envelope, her eyebrows lifting in curious amusement. “What is that, Mr. Pierce?”

Jonah smiled—a slow, breathtaking smile that reached every corner of his handsome face.

“Fifty thousand dollars,” Jonah murmured.

Stella laughed—a rich, melodic, beautiful sound that filled the private salon. “Fifty thousand? The interest on Dean’s debt?”

“No,” Jonah said softly, reaching across the table, taking her left hand into his, his rough fingers caressing her knuckles.

“That is the exact amount the Hayes Foundation just received from the City of New York to fund the new emergency domestic intervention wing at Bellevue Hospital.”

Stella looked down at the envelope, then up into the eyes of the man who had laid his entire universe at her feet.

She remembered the wet night.

She remembered the fear in her chest, the burning pain in her ribs, the terrifying moment she extended that first envelope and felt the world tilt into darkness.

She remembered thinking that she was garbage being traded between monsters.

She had no idea that in collapsing at this very table, she hadn't fallen into an abyss.

She had fallen straight into the arms of the man who was born to love her, to protect her, and to show her what real strength looked like.

Stella reached out, picked up the heavy manila envelope, and pushed it aside without opening it.

She leaned across the candlelit table, sliding both hands into Jonah’s, looking straight into the dark eyes that held her entire future.

“Keep the money, Jonah,” Stella whispered, her voice luminous, steady, and filled with an unbreakable love.

“I already have the only treasure in this city that matters.”

Jonah leaned forward, his forehead resting gently against hers, their breathing falling into a synchronized, peaceful rhythm as the rain whispered softly against the glass outside.

The ledger was balanced.

The debts were forgiven.

And at Table 7, where a broken girl had once fallen in the dark, a queen was finally, beautifully, forever home.
