Chapter 8 - The House Beneath the House

Federal vehicles reached the eastern edge of Charles Cole’s property at 11:18 p.m.
I watched through Agent Brooks’s tablet while she remained in my hospital room. Ruiz had left with the tactical team, and Daniel’s disconnected phone could no longer be located.
The aerial camera showed the estate from above.
The main house sat in darkness, its stone exterior surrounded by bare trees and winter gardens. Officers approached from three directions while another team moved toward the greenhouse.
No one knew who had fired the shot.
No one knew whether Daniel was alive.
No one knew if Lucas had been pulled back underground.
Judge Reed stood near the window, both hands clasped.
Maya was speaking with Judge Whitaker’s clerk, trying to obtain emergency access to Charles’s private financial records.
Brooke remained in federal custody downstairs.
Ethan was still missing.
At 11:24, the tactical team breached the greenhouse.
Inside, they found Vanessa’s coat on the floor.
Blood stained one sleeve.
A trapdoor beneath a workbench opened into a narrow concrete staircase.
Ruiz’s voice came through the live channel.
“Entering tunnel.”
The camera shook as agents descended.
I could hear boots striking metal steps.
Then someone called out.
“Victim!”
The image turned.
Daniel lay against the tunnel wall, one hand pressed over his shoulder.
He was alive.
Even through the grainy feed, I recognized his face.
Seventeen years vanished again.
I wanted to reach through the screen and touch him.
Ruiz knelt beside him.
“Where is the boy?”
Daniel pointed deeper into the tunnel.
“Vanessa took him.”
“Who shot you?”
“Charles.”
“Where is Charles?”
“Inside the shelter.”
A medic began treating Daniel.
He fought them.
“Lucas first.”
Ruiz continued forward.
The tunnel ended at a steel door.
Brooke had warned that the shelter could be sealed for twelve hours, but the external control panel remained active.
The agents entered a code recovered from Charles’s security office.
ACCESS DENIED.
A second attempt triggered a warning.
ONE ATTEMPT REMAINING.
The feed showed Ruiz studying the keypad.
My phone rang.
Ethan’s name appeared.
Everyone in the room froze.
Maya nodded for me to answer.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“I can open the shelter.”
His voice sounded strained.
“Then give the agents the code.”
“I want an agreement.”
My anger sharpened everything.
“Our son is inside.”
“He is not my son.”
“He is seventeen years old and your family kidnapped him.”
“My father kidnapped him.”
“You tried to steal his inheritance.”
“I was trying to keep my father from taking everything.”
“By taking it yourself?”
Ethan exhaled.
“Natalie, you have never understood what Charles does to people who refuse him.”
“I understand better than you think.”
“I can open the door remotely, but once I do, I need federal protection.”
Maya took the phone.
“This is Maya Chen. You are in no position to negotiate.”
“I have the original ledgers. I have recordings of Charles ordering the procurement fraud. I have proof that Richard Reed helped him build the network.”
Judge Reed closed her eyes.
Ethan continued.
“And I have Eleanor.”
My mother stepped forward.
“Is she alive?”
“For now.”
“Where is she?”
“With me.”
“Let me speak to her.”
“No.”
Maya looked toward Agent Brooks, who was tracing the call.
“What do you want?” Maya asked.
“Protection. A reduced sentence. And assurance that Vanessa cannot access the company.”
I took the phone back.
“You planned to have me declared insane.”
“I planned to make you sign.”
“You damaged my brakes.”
“My father ordered it.”
“You paid the mechanic.”
Silence.
“You drugged me.”
“I told Brooke to frighten you.”
“The man who came into my hospital room had enough potassium to kill me.”
“That was Charles.”
“You always say someone else gave the order.”
“Natalie—”
“You smiled when Vanessa kicked our daughter.”
His voice broke.
“I didn’t know she was going to do that.”
“But when it happened, you smiled.”
He had no answer.
I looked at the feed.
Ruiz waited beside the shelter door.
“Open it,” I said.
“I need your promise.”
“You have one chance to do something that is not entirely selfish.”
“My father will kill me.”
“Then help us stop him.”
For several seconds, I heard nothing except Ethan’s breathing.
Then the control panel in the tunnel flashed.
REMOTE ACCESS ENABLED.
The steel door began to open.
Agents moved through.
The shelter was larger than anyone expected. It contained bedrooms, storage rooms, communication equipment, and a second underground garage.
A house beneath the house.
The first room was empty.
In the second, agents found shelves filled with corporate files.
In the third, they found Mrs. Alvarez.
Alive.
She was thin and weak but conscious.
She told agents that Eleanor had hidden her for months before Charles’s people found them.
“Lucas,” I whispered. “Find Lucas.”
Ruiz moved toward a central chamber.
A voice echoed through the shelter.
“You are trespassing on private property.”
Charles Cole appeared on a monitor mounted above the door.
He had Ethan’s silver hair and the same cold blue eyes.
“I have activated a fire-suppression protocol,” Charles said. “This facility will seal in sixty seconds.”
Ruiz raised his weapon toward the camera.
“Federal agents. Open all doors.”
Charles smiled.
“Federal agents have worked for me before.”
Steel partitions began descending throughout the shelter.
Ruiz ordered teams to retreat or move forward.
Then Lucas appeared behind Charles on the monitor.
Vanessa held a knife against his throat.
Her left arm was bleeding.
“You shot me,” she shouted at someone outside the frame. “You were supposed to pay me!”
Charles did not look at her.
“You confused temporary usefulness with value.”
Vanessa pressed the blade closer to Lucas’s skin.
“I will kill him.”
“No, you won’t,” Charles said. “You still believe he is your bargaining position.”
Lucas suddenly drove his heel backward into Vanessa’s knee.
She screamed.
He twisted away.
The knife fell.
A man rushed into view.
Daniel.
He should have been receiving medical treatment, but he had followed the agents inside.
He tackled Vanessa before she could reach Lucas.
Charles drew a gun.
The monitor feed shook as gunshots erupted.
Judge Reed covered her mouth.
I stared at the screen, unable to tell who had been hit.
Then the feed cut to black.
The shelter partitions locked.
All communication stopped.
On Agent Brooks’s map, every team marker inside the facility went red.
NO SIGNAL.
My phone buzzed with a message from Ethan.
I DID MY PART.
NOW COME TO THE OLD COURTHOUSE ALONE.
BRING MY DAUGHTER’S TRUST DOCUMENTS.
OR ELEANOR DIES.
Below the message was a photograph.
Eleanor sat tied to a chair inside an abandoned courtroom.
Behind her stood Ethan.
He was holding the red case folder Judge Reed had dropped when she first saw me.
May you like
Inside that folder were sealed judicial records.
Records my husband was never supposed to possess.
