Chapter 6 - The Trap at Blackwater Lodge

Rebecca contacted Elena the next morning.
The call came through Claire’s old phone number.
“Do you remember me now?” Rebecca asked.
Elena stood inside the safe house while federal agents recorded every word.
“I remember exactly who you are.”
Rebecca laughed softly.
“You were always the cautious one. Claire was the brave one.”
“Where is Sophie?”
“Safe enough.”
“Let me speak to her.”
“You don’t make demands.”
“I’m not giving you anything until I know she’s alive.”
There was movement on the line.
A young woman cried out.
“Please! I don’t know these people!”
Then David’s voice replaced hers.
“You destroyed my life, Elena.”
“No. You did that in a restaurant full of witnesses.”
“You turned my wife against me.”
Maya stood nearby, listening.
For once, she did not shrink at the sound of him.
“You abused her,” Elena said. “She finally stopped lying for you.”
David’s breathing grew heavier.
“She is confused. She needs me.”
“No woman needs a man who has to hurt her to feel powerful.”
Rebecca returned to the call.
“Enough. Bring the original ledger to Blackwater Lodge tonight at ten. You and Maya come alone.”
“Where is Claire?”
A pause.
“Closer than you think.”
The call ended.
Blackwater Lodge was an abandoned hunting resort near the Massachusetts-New York border. It belonged to another shell company connected to the Vances.
Federal agents immediately prepared a rescue operation.
Elena and Maya would not go alone.
The ledger would be replaced with a duplicate containing a tracking device. Tactical teams would surround the property.
Maya listened quietly as the plan was explained.
Then she shook her head.
“They’ll know.”
Agent Lauren Price looked at her.
“Why?”
“David studies people. He expects fear. If we behave too calmly, he’ll know police are nearby.”
“We can prepare you.”
“No,” Maya said. “You don’t understand. He watches breathing, posture, eye movement. He used to question me for hours if I came home ten minutes late.”
Elena reached for her hand.
“You do not have to go.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Maya—”
“He thinks I still belong to him. That is the only advantage we have.”
The room became quiet.
Maya continued.
“He will separate us. He will try to make me defend him. Let him.”
Agent Price studied her.
“You want to convince him you’re willing to return?”
“Yes.”
“That could place you in greater danger.”
“He’s already dangerous.”
Maya’s voice remained steady.
“But for the first time, I know what he is.”
At nine forty-five that night, Elena and Maya drove toward Blackwater Lodge in Elena’s car.
The duplicate ledger rested inside a leather bag.
A transmitter was sewn into Maya’s coat. A second was hidden beneath Elena’s watch.
The lodge appeared beyond the trees like a shadow.
Most windows were dark.
One upstairs room glowed with yellow light.
Maya parked where instructed.
David emerged from the front entrance carrying a handgun.
Rebecca followed behind him.
She wore a long black coat and the same pearl necklace from the restaurant.
“Leave your phones in the car,” David ordered.
Elena and Maya obeyed.
“Bring the bag.”
They walked toward the lodge.
David’s eyes remained fixed on Maya.
“You look terrible.”
Maya lowered her gaze.
“I haven’t been sleeping.”
“You never sleep properly without me.”
Elena felt anger surge through her, but Maya gave a barely visible movement of her fingers.
Stay quiet.
Inside the lodge, Sophie was tied to a chair near the fireplace.
Her lip was split.
A bruise darkened one side of her face.
Elena placed the bag on a table.
“Release her.”
Rebecca opened the ledger and flipped through the pages.
She inspected the binding, paper and handwritten entries.
For several tense seconds, Elena feared the duplicate would fail.
Then Rebecca smiled.
“You kept it all these years.”
“Claire kept it.”
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“Claire always confused stubbornness with intelligence.”
“Is she alive?”
Rebecca looked toward the staircase.
A woman stepped from the shadows.
Her hair was silver and cut short. A scar ran from her right temple to her jaw.
But Elena recognized her eyes.
“Claire.”
Neither woman moved at first.
Twenty-seven years stood between them.
Then Claire descended the stairs.
Rebecca raised a second handgun.
“Touch her and Sophie dies.”
Claire stopped.
Sophie stared at her.
“Who are you?”
Claire’s face broke.
“I’m your mother.”
Sophie began crying.
David paced behind Maya.
“You see what secrets do to families?”
Maya turned slowly.
“You mean secrets like murder?”
He slapped her.
The sound cracked across the lodge.
Every agent listening through Maya’s transmitter heard it.
But no one moved yet.
The tactical team still did not know how many armed guards were inside.
Maya touched her lip.
David leaned closer.
“Tell your mother what you told me in the car.”
Elena’s heart stopped.
There had been no conversation with David in the car.
Maya lowered her head.
“I want to come home.”
David smiled.
Rebecca glanced up from the ledger.
“What?”
Maya continued.
“I made a mistake. I should never have let Mom call the police.”
Elena stared at her daughter.
Even knowing it was an act, the words hurt.
David placed a hand against Maya’s cheek.
“You finally understand.”
“I do.”
“Then prove it.”
He handed her the gun.
“Shoot your mother.”
Elena’s blood turned cold.
Maya stared at the weapon.
David wrapped her fingers around the grip.
“You said she controls you. You said we could start over.”
Rebecca watched with interest.
Claire moved subtly toward Sophie.
Rebecca immediately aimed at her.
“Don’t.”
Maya raised the gun.
Her hands trembled.
David stood behind her, smiling.
“That’s it. Show her you choose your husband.”
Elena met Maya’s eyes.
For years, Maya had been taught that fear was weakness.
But Elena saw something else in her daughter’s expression.
Calculation.
Maya turned the gun slightly.
Then she fired into the ceiling.
The lodge exploded into motion.
Claire threw herself toward Sophie.
Elena flipped the table, knocking the ledger and Rebecca’s gun aside.
Outside, tactical teams advanced.
David grabbed Maya around the throat and dragged her toward the back hallway.
“You lying little—”
Maya slammed her heel down on his foot.
He loosened his grip.
She drove her elbow into his ribs exactly as the shelter’s security instructor had taught her.
David stumbled.
Elena rushed toward them.
Rebecca recovered her weapon and aimed at Maya.
Claire saw it.
She lifted the heavy fireplace poker and struck Rebecca’s wrist.
The gun discharged.
A window shattered.
Agents broke through the doors.
“Federal agents! Drop the weapon!”
David seized Maya again and pressed the barrel of his gun beneath her jaw.
“No one moves!”
Elena froze.
Maya’s eyes found hers.
David backed toward a side door.
“She comes with me.”
Agent Price kept her weapon trained on him.
“You are surrounded.”
“I will kill her.”
“No,” Maya whispered.
David tightened his grip.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
For the first time, Maya’s voice held no fear.
“You don’t decide where I go anymore.”
She dropped her full weight suddenly.
David’s arm shifted.
A sniper fired.
The bullet struck David’s shoulder.
He screamed and fell backward.
Maya rolled away as agents rushed him.
Rebecca attempted to flee through the kitchen but found officers waiting at the rear exit.
Within seconds, both mother and son were restrained.
Claire cut Sophie’s ropes with shaking hands.
Sophie looked at her biological mother as though staring at a ghost.
“Why did you leave me?”
Claire fell to her knees.
“I didn’t leave because I didn’t love you. I left because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”
Elena moved toward Maya.
Her daughter stood near the overturned table, breathing hard.
David lay on the floor several feet away, bleeding and shouting that Maya had betrayed him.
She did not look at him.
She looked at Elena.
“Mom?”
Elena embraced her.
Maya began to shake.
But this time, she was not shaking because she was trapped.
She was shaking because she was finally free.
Then Agent Price opened the duplicate ledger.
Her face changed.
“The tracking device is gone.”
Elena looked toward Rebecca.
Rebecca smiled from the floor.
“You brought us a copy.”
No one answered.
Rebecca’s smile widened.
“Which means the original ledger is somewhere else.”
Claire suddenly turned toward Elena.
“Where did you put it?”
“In federal evidence storage.”
Claire’s face drained of color.
“No. Rebecca never wanted this copy.”
A loud explosion sounded through Agent Price’s radio.
May you like
The federal evidence facility in Boston had just been attacked.
And the original ledger was missing.
