Chapter 14 - The Last Orsini WarThe ring was wrapped in brown paper.

No note.

No return address.

Blood filled the carved grooves of the Orsini crest.

Micah stood across the kitchen table.

“Is it his?”

“Yes.”

“Does the blood belong to him?”

“I don’t know.”

He picked up his phone.

“I’m calling Sabine.”

Within an hour, Damian, Sabine, Freddy, and two federal agents filled my apartment.

The agents claimed Raphael had survived the prison attack but had disappeared during transport to a secure medical unit.

“Prisoners do not disappear from federal vehicles,” Sabine said.

“One of the transport officers was compromised,” the agent answered.

“By whom?”

“We believe former Orsini loyalists.”

Damian examined the wrapping paper.

“This fold is deliberate.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

He opened the paper completely.

Tiny marks had been pressed along one edge.

Raphael used the same pattern in the margins of his letters.

A code.

Damian translated it.

EAST WING. SEVEN. BELOW.

“The mansion,” I said.

The federal government had seized the Orsini estate after the trial. It stood empty behind locked gates.

At seven that evening, we entered through the old laundry tunnel.

Freddy carried a flashlight and a cast-iron skillet.

Damian looked at it.

“You brought cookware?”

“I brought something I know how to use.”

The east wing smelled of dust.

Raphael’s study had been searched and stripped. The west gallery portraits were covered with sheets.

Seven.

Seventh room?

Seventh stair?

Then Micah pointed toward the grandfather clock.

“It is stopped at seven.”

Below the clock, one floor panel sounded hollow.

Damian lifted it.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

The hidden chamber beneath the mansion contained weapons, passports, and surveillance monitors.

On the central screen, Raphael sat tied to a chair inside an unknown warehouse.

His face was bruised.

A man stood behind him.

Marco Bellini.

He had not died in the abandoned vehicle. Vittorio had killed a body double.

Marco looked directly into the camera.

“Elena Marlowe. Bring Sofia and Micah to Pier Nineteen before midnight. In exchange, Raphael lives.”

Sofia stepped from the tunnel entrance.

“No.”

Sabine turned.

“You were supposed to stay in the car.”

“I stopped obeying kidnappers when I was nine.”

Marco continued on the recording.

“The Orsini bloodline ends tonight, or Raphael dies knowing Elena chose his children over him.”

The screen went black.

“He wants all three heirs,” Damian said.

“Raphael is not an heir,” I answered. “He was the leader.”

“You misunderstand. Marco does not consider power inherited through blood. He considers it inherited through loyalty. Raphael chose you publicly. In the old organization, that made you a successor.”

“I am a nursing student.”

Freddy gripped the skillet.

“That has never stopped men from assigning women responsibilities they did not request.”

We contacted the federal agents.

Pier Nineteen was an abandoned shipping terminal with multiple underground exits. A direct assault would likely get Raphael killed.

So we gave Marco what he expected.

At eleven-forty, I drove toward the warehouse with Sofia and Micah visible in the back seat.

Damian followed beneath the cargo compartment.

Sabine and federal teams approached through the river tunnels.

Freddy remained in the surveillance van, complaining that everyone else had received more interesting jobs.

Marco’s men opened the gate.

Inside, Raphael sat beneath a single light.

His head lifted when he saw us.

Anger entered his face.

“Elena, no.”

Marco pressed a gun behind his neck.

“She came because she loves you.”

Raphael’s gaze moved to Micah and Sofia.

“You should have stayed away.”

Micah exited the vehicle.

“You do not know us well enough to keep ordering that.”

Sofia joined him.

“And you promised not to choose.”

Marco smiled.

“Touching.”

I walked forward carrying the metal box from my mother’s hidden room.

“You want the Orsini records?”

“I want every name still loyal to Raphael.”

“They are inside.”

Marco reached for the box.

I opened it.

A medical oxygen cylinder sat beneath the files.

Before he could react, I opened the valve and threw the box toward the warehouse heater.

The room filled with white vapor.

Lights exploded.

Damian emerged from the vehicle.

Gunfire erupted from the upper walkway.

I ran toward Raphael.

Marco seized me and pressed a knife beneath my ribs.

“Stop,” he shouted.

Everyone froze.

Raphael pulled against the restraints.

“Let her go.”

Marco dragged me backward.

“You destroyed everything.”

“No,” I said. “Vittorio did.”

“He gave men purpose.”

“He gave frightened men permission to blame innocent people for their failures.”

The knife pressed harder.

Then Micah moved a chess piece across the floor.

The black king from his hospital pillow.

Marco looked down.

Sofia threw the portable alarm device Freddy had given her.

A piercing sound filled the warehouse.

Marco flinched.

I twisted away.

Raphael broke one wrist free and struck him.

They fell against the loading platform.

Marco’s knife entered Raphael’s side.

I heard myself scream.

Damian fired.

Marco staggered toward the edge.

Raphael caught his coat.

For a moment, he could have let him fall into the river.

Instead, he pulled Marco back onto the platform.

Federal agents surrounded them.

“You saved him,” I said.

Raphael looked at Marco.

“I am finished creating ghosts.”

Then his knees gave out.

I reached him before he hit the floor.

Blood covered my hands.

“Stay with me.”

His eyes struggled to focus.

“One hundred seven nights,” he whispered.

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

He pressed something into my palm.

A small brass key.

“Room one hundred seven.”

“Where?”

“The treatment center.”

His breathing became shallow.

“Elena, the first photograph was taken there.”

Medics rushed toward us.

Raphael was lifted onto a stretcher.

As they carried him away, Micah looked at the key.

“There is no Room 107 at my treatment center.”

Sofia stared at the numbers.

“There was.”

She touched the scar beneath her shoulder.

“That is where they kept us together.”

May you like

The hidden room contained the final secret of Vittorio’s program.

And according to Sofia, my mother had left something inside for all three of us.
