Chapter 6 - The Safehouse in the Shadows

The next morning, the reality of our situation crashed down like a concrete wave. I stood by the frosted window of the loft, looking out over the bleak, rain-soaked Chicago skyline.
My phone, stripped of its tracking SIM, was linked to an encrypted burner network. The news on the street was catastrophic. Marcus had moved fast. He had convened the council of Chicago families, declared me dead in a tragic home invasion, and assumed control of my assets. He had painted the hit as retaliation from the Miami cartel, completely absolving himself of the blame.
“He’s consolidating power,” I told Claire as she handed me a mug of black coffee. “By tonight, he’ll have full control of the ports and the union payouts. Once he locks down the offshore accounts, we’ll be starved out. We can't stay hidden forever.”
Claire walked over to the hidden weapons cache, pulling out a heavy, matte-black assault rifle, checking the optics.
“We aren't going to stay hidden,” Claire said, tossing a loaded magazine onto the table. “Marcus thinks he’s playing chess. He thinks he’s eliminated the king. But he forgot about the board itself. We need to strike the heart of his operation before he fully entrenches himself.”
Emma padded softly into the room, rubbing her eyes. She walked up to Claire and tugged on her pant leg.
“Claire,” Emma said, her voice clear and sweet. “Are you going to shoot the bad man who hurt my sister?”
I froze. My youngest daughter, who had spent three years trapped in a prison of traumatic silence, was speaking in full sentences as if the lock had finally been broken.
Claire knelt down, bringing herself eye-to-eye with Emma. She didn't patronize her. She didn't give her a fake, sheltering smile.
“Yes, sweetie,” Claire said with absolute, solemn honesty. “I am going to make sure the bad man never comes near your family again.”
Emma nodded, satisfied, and walked over to the couch to sit beside Harper.
I looked at Claire, my chest tightening with an overwhelming surge of love and awe. “You really are a miracle worker.”
“I’m just a soldier, Elias,” Claire said, standing up and handing me a sleek, silenced pistol. “And right now, we need to go to war. Marcus operates out of the shipping warehouses on the South Side. That’s where he’ll be hosting his coronation dinner tonight with the remaining lieutenants.”

“It’s a fortress,” I warned her. “He’ll have fifty armed men guarding that perimeter.”
A dangerous, beautiful smile touched Claire’s lips. “Good. I brought enough C4 to level a city block. Let’s go introduce them to the maid.”
