CHAPTER 8 — THE BOARDROOM CLOCK

The Ravenscroft emergency board meeting began at seven o’clock behind locked doors.

Bennett intended to approve an immediate transfer of the scholarship foundation’s remaining funds to a “protective financial administrator.”

The administrator was a company owned by one of his business partners.

Once the money moved, recovering it could take years.

Students like Harper would lose tuition support immediately.

Rebecca obtained a temporary court order freezing the transfer, but the judge required confirmation that the funds faced an urgent threat.

We needed to present the evidence before Bennett completed the vote.

Ravenscroft security blocked the main entrance.

Hundreds of parents, students and reporters gathered outside after Dana Wexler published the first verified article about the altered game clock.

The headline read:

RECORDING REVEALS RAVENSCROFT DONOR ORDERED PLAY TO CONTINUE AFTER BUZZER

Bennett called it manipulated audio.

Then Dana released still images from the original livestream.

The crowd outside grew louder.

Malik used the public address equipment from the student newspaper van to broadcast updates. Harper stood beside scholarship families who had begun arriving after learning their funding might disappear.

Avery and Owen brought medical records.

Marta brought original maintenance documents.

Assistant Principal Price arrived with her attorney.

Lucas stood beside me near the locked glass doors.

Two years earlier, he had walked out of Ravenscroft alone.

Now dozens of people stood behind him.

Officer Ross opened a side entrance.

“Board members requested independent security,” he said. “Bennett’s authority has been temporarily limited.”

We entered Founders Hall at 7:24.

Bennett sat at the center of the board table.

His attorney whispered beside him.

Evelyn Cole’s chair was empty.

Genevieve had not arrived.

The board secretary announced that the fund-transfer vote was suspended under court order.

Bennett struck the table.

“This institution is being held hostage by fabricated accusations and social-media hysteria.”

Rebecca placed the portable server drive before the board.

“This contains the original livestream, authenticated by the school archivist and supported by contemporaneous system records.”

The school attorney objected.

Dr. Foster explained the archive chain.

Marta authenticated the scoreboard serial numbers.

Price admitted restarting the clock.

Then the video played.

The buzzer echoed through Founders Hall.

On the screen, the scoreboard reached zero.

The clock restarted at forty-seven seconds.

Bennett’s arm moved.

Genevieve attacked the play.

Avery fell.

Several board members looked away.

When the video ended, Bennett remained calm.

“That footage proves Coach Pierce lost control of a game,” he said. “It does not prove financial misconduct.”

Rebecca played the smartwatch recording.

Evelyn’s voice accused Bennett of moving restricted donations.

Bennett’s recorded response confirmed that her signature appeared on the accounts.

The scholarship spreadsheets followed.

Then Officer Ross presented the parking-garage video showing Bennett’s attorney collecting police evidence with false documents.

The room changed.

Board members who had defended Bennett began distancing themselves physically. One moved his chair several feet away.

Bennett’s attorney stopped whispering and began packing his papers.

Bennett noticed.

“You work for me,” he said.

The attorney replied, “I represent the foundation. Those are no longer the same interest.”

Bennett stood.

“You are all reacting to recordings stolen and manipulated by teenagers.”

Lucas faced him.

“You have used that sentence for two years.”

“Because it is true.”

“You expelled me to bury a clock log.”

“You were an unstable boy seeking attention.”

My mother rose from the audience.

“My son begged your school to investigate.”

Bennett barely looked at her.

“Your son violated our systems.”

“You violated children.”

The doors opened.

Genevieve entered.

Her mother followed.

Evelyn Cole looked pale but composed. Two state investigators entered behind them.

Bennett’s confidence cracked.

“Evelyn,” he said, “do not speak without counsel.”

“I have counsel.”

“You signed those accounts.”

“Because you told me they funded students.”

“You benefited from them.”

“So did you.”

“You will destroy our family.”

Genevieve walked toward the board table.

“You already did.”

Bennett turned to her.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

It was a small word.

But everyone heard it.

Genevieve admitted possessing the wireless clock programmer during spring tryouts. Bennett had instructed her to connect it beneath the equipment table so the system would malfunction near me.

Coach Pierce was supposed to discover the problem and accuse me of accessing protected equipment.

“When Noelle removed the controller, I thought she had seen me,” Genevieve said. “I panicked.”

“You defended school property,” Bennett interrupted.

“I shoved her because I was afraid she had proof.”

“Genevieve.”

“You taught me fear was the same thing as loyalty.”

Bennett stepped around the table.

Officer Ross moved between them.

Genevieve continued.

During the semifinal, Bennett used the hand signal ordering her to take Avery out of the play.

“I knew the buzzer had sounded,” she said. “I knew Avery was confused. I hit her anyway.”

Avery sat motionless.

Genevieve looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

Avery’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.

“You were sorry while I was lying on the field.”

“I know.”

“You stayed silent for two years.”

“I know.”

“Your father being cruel does not erase what you did.”

“I know.”

Bennett pointed toward Avery.

“Do not answer her.”

Genevieve turned on him.

“You do not get to tell me what to say anymore.”

The board voted unanimously to remove Bennett as chairman.

His access to school and foundation systems was terminated.

Investigators served warrants covering the scholarship accounts, Cole Harbor Development and the destruction of evidence.

As Bennett was escorted toward the exit, he looked at me.

“You think this makes you a hero?”

“No.”

“You destroyed Ravenscroft’s reputation.”

“The truth did not damage Ravenscroft,” I said. “What you did damaged it.”

He smiled bitterly.

“People forget scandals.”

“Maybe.”

I looked toward Lucas.

“But records remember.”

Bennett was taken outside through a side entrance to avoid the crowd.

The board suspended Genevieve pending an independent disciplinary process. Price formally resigned. Coach Pierce remained missing but contacted investigators through an attorney later that night.

The fund transfer was stopped.

The remaining scholarship money was frozen and protected.

It should have felt finished.

It wasn’t.

After the meeting, Avery approached Genevieve in the empty hallway.

“You should know something,” Avery said.

Genevieve looked frightened.

“What?”

“The collision was not the only reason I lost my scholarship offers.”

She handed Genevieve one of the ranking spreadsheets.

Beside Avery’s name was a recommendation written six weeks before the semifinal.

Remove from recruitment pipeline. Family unwilling to align with Cole program.

Bennett had decided to destroy Avery’s future before Genevieve hit her.

The clock manipulation gave him the opportunity.

Genevieve read the note.

“My father planned all of it.”

“Not all of it,” Avery said. “You still made a choice.”

Genevieve nodded.

Then Evelyn approached us carrying a leather folder.

“I found this in Bennett’s home office,” she said.

Inside was a list of students whose records had been altered over seven years.

Academic complaints.

Disciplinary incidents.

Medical reports.

Recruitment rankings.

Lucas was one name among dozens.

At the bottom of the final page was a student we did not recognize.

Sienna Brooks — action scheduled Monday.

The girl in the red jacket had helped expose Bennett.

Now the system he created was still moving against her.

Even without him.

Someone else at Ravenscroft had continued issuing orders.

And according to the access log, that person had entered the scholarship database during the board meeting.

The username was:

NPIERCE_ADMIN.

Coach Nolan Pierce.

The missing man Bennett had planned to blame for everything was not hiding from him anymore.

Pierce was using the chaos to take control.
