Chapter 8 - Secrets Written in Blood

By nightfall, Chicago was bleeding.

Sitting in the war room on the second floor of the Estate, I watched the chaotic symphony of destruction unfold on the massive digital wall monitors. Marcus had executed my orders with terrifying precision.

To the local news stations currently blaring on the screens, it looked like a sudden, unprecedented surge of gang violence. A Russian-owned nightclub in the South Loop had mysterious exploded. Three unmarked warehouses near the docks had been raided by heavily armed men in black tactical gear, the human cargo liberated, and the Russian guards left bound and beaten for the police to find.

I took a sip of dark espresso, my eyes tracing the red dots appearing on the digital map of the city. We were systematically dismantling Mayor Sterling’s shadow empire, brick by bloody brick.

The heavy mahogany doors of the war room creaked open. I turned to see Clara being wheeled into the room by Maria. Clara was dressed in a thick, oversized wool sweater, her cast resting on the elevated leg rest of the wheelchair. She looked exhausted, but the absolute terror that had gripped her earlier was gone. In its place was a cold, calculating determination.

"Norah is asleep," Clara said softly as Maria backed out of the room, leaving us alone. "Dr. Aris gave her a mild sedative. She'll sleep through the night."

"You should be resting, too," I noted, setting my espresso cup down.

"I can't sleep while the man who tried to kill my daughter is still breathing," she replied, her eyes drifting to the glowing monitors. She took in the news broadcasts—the burning warehouses, the frantic reporters standing outside police barricades.

"Did you do this?" she asked, looking back at me.

"I am burning Volkov’s infrastructure to the ground," I said plainly. "By tomorrow morning, the Russian syndicate will be completely crippled. Without their muscle, Sterling won't be able to protect his shipments."

Clara wheeled herself closer to the massive digital map, her sharp auditor's eyes scanning the red targets. "You're hitting their distribution hubs. But you're missing the central artery."

I raised an eyebrow. "Explain."

"Sterling doesn't keep the money in Chicago," Clara said, her voice growing steady and authoritative. "The cash from the trafficking ring is laundered through a private security firm called Aegis Consulting. They operate out of a heavily fortified data center in the Financial District. If you want to destroy Sterling, you don't just burn his warehouses. You wipe the Aegis servers. You erase the offshore accounts. You take his money. A corrupt politician without money is a dead man walking."

I looked at her, genuinely impressed. Beneath the bruised exterior was a brilliant tactical mind. "The Financial District is highly visible. Hitting a corporate data center requires finesse, not just firepower."

"I have the master override codes," Clara said, tapping her temple. "I memorized them before I fled my office. If you can get me a secure terminal inside their network, I can drain every single account Sterling has into zero, and transfer the ledger directly to the Department of Justice."

Before I could answer, the heavy doors of the war room slammed open. Elias strode in, his face tighter than I had ever seen it. He ignored Clara completely, walking straight to my desk.

"Boss, we have a massive problem."

Elias picked up the remote and changed the central monitor to a live feed from CNN.

The screen showed the imposing, glass facade of the Riverfront Grand Hotel—the crown jewel of my legitimate real estate empire. But the pristine entrance was currently surrounded by dozens of armored police vehicles. Heavily armed SWAT teams in tactical gear were pouring out of the trucks, kicking in the glass revolving doors, aiming assault rifles at my terrified civilian employees and guests.

The ticker at the bottom of the screen read: BREAKING: MAYOR DECLARES MARTIAL LAW ON ORGANIZED CRIME; CPD RAIDS VALE ENTERPRISES.

The camera cut to a live press conference. Mayor Richard Sterling stood at a podium at City Hall, looking perfectly groomed, deeply concerned, and utterly hypocritical.

"The violent attacks across our city tonight are the desperate actions of a known criminal syndicate," Sterling proclaimed into the microphones, his voice echoing with false righteousness. "For too long, men like Gideon Vale have hidden behind corporate facades while flooding our streets with blood. Tonight, the City of Chicago fights back. I have authorized a full-scale raid on all properties associated with the Vale Corporation. We will seize his assets, we will arrest his associates, and we will not rest until Gideon Vale is brought to justice."

Elias muted the television. "It’s not just the hotel, Gideon. They’re hitting the casinos. They’re raiding the downtown corporate offices. Sterling is weaponizing the police department. He’s framing our retaliatory strikes against the Russians as unprovoked terrorism. He's trying to smoke you out by freezing your legitimate billions."

I stared at the screen, a dark, venomous smile slowly spreading across my face.

"He thinks he can use a badge to hide from me," I whispered, the rage settling into a frigid, absolute calm.

"What do we do, Boss?" Elias asked. "If we fire on CPD SWAT, we cross a line we can't uncross. The Feds will get involved."

"Let them have the buildings," I commanded, turning my back on the monitors. "The hotels and casinos are just glass and steel. Our real strength has always been in the shadows."

I walked over to Clara, leaning down so my eyes were level with hers.

"You said you can drain his accounts if we get you into the Aegis data center?" I asked.

"I can," she said, her eyes locked with mine, completely unfazed by the chaos unfolding on the screens. "But getting in there tonight? With the police mobilizing across the whole city? It's a suicide mission."

May you like

"Not for us," I said, standing to my full height. "Sterling thinks he put me on the defensive. He thinks I'm going to hide in my fortress while he tears my public empire apart."

I looked at Elias. "Assemble the ghost team. Armor up. We are going into the Financial District tonight, and we are taking Ms. Evans with us. We aren't going to fight the police. We are going to bankrupt the Mayor of Chicago while he's busy giving a press conference."
