Chapter 13 - The Night America Almost Fell

The first missile struck the estate’s western gate.

The explosion shattered every window that had not been covered by steel.

Military vehicles surrounded Harrow House.

Television networks reported that armed terrorists had taken the vice president hostage.

Nathaniel Graves was named as the leader.

The president appeared on live television and authorized “all necessary force” to rescue Jonathan Harrow.

“They’re going to destroy the house,” my mother said.

Harrow remained handcuffed on the library floor, strangely calm.

“The president cannot allow that recording to survive.”

My father removed the golden chip from the terminal.

“We need to broadcast it.”

“The estate signal is blocked,” Gideon said.

Harrow laughed.

“There is a communications bunker beneath the north wing. It connects directly to the White House emergency network.”

Nathaniel looked at him.

“And why are you telling us?”

“Because the president intends to kill me too.”

No one trusted him.

But another explosion shook the walls.

The soldiers would enter within minutes.

Harrow guided us toward the bunker.

Gideon kept a gun against his back.

The passage ran beneath the house and opened into a reinforced command center.

Screens displayed military movements, emergency broadcasts, and secure government networks.

My father connected the golden chip.

“Encryption will take time.”

“How much?” Claire asked.

“Seven minutes.”

The bunker door shook as soldiers attached explosives outside.

Nathaniel placed his remaining men along the passage.

“We hold them here.”

“You’re injured,” my mother said.

“So are most interesting people.”

She almost smiled despite everything.

The president’s face appeared on the main screen.

He was calling Nathaniel a domestic enemy.

Harrow stood beside me, his hands still bound.

“He was always more dangerous than I was.”

“Because he’s president?”

“Because he believes he is righteous.”

The bunker door exploded.

Gunfire filled the passage.

Nathaniel and Gideon returned fire.

My mother covered me behind the communication console.

My father continued typing.

UPLOAD PREPARATION: 41%.

A soldier entered through a ventilation shaft.

Harrow knocked him down with his shoulder.

The soldier’s weapon slid across the floor.

Harrow reached for it.

Nathaniel aimed at him.

For one second, everyone expected Harrow to attack us.

Instead, he shot another soldier approaching behind Nathaniel.

“Do not misunderstand,” Harrow said. “I am saving myself.”

The upload reached 63%.

The bunker’s power shut down.

Emergency batteries activated.

Michael stared at the screen.

“The president cut the White House network.”

“Can you route around it?” Gideon asked.

“Through civilian emergency frequencies.”

“Do it.”

The system required another identity confirmation.

My name appeared again.

Ruby Evelyn Graves.

I placed my hand on the scanner.

VOICE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

This time, the sentence read:

I authorize the truth to be released without alteration.

I spoke clearly.

“I authorize the truth to be released without alteration.”

The upload began.

1%.

10%.

25%.

More soldiers entered the bunker.

Nathaniel ran out of ammunition.

He used the empty gun to strike one man and shielded me from another.

Gideon was shot in the leg.

My mother seized a fallen weapon and fired toward the doorway.

My father worked at the terminal while blood ran down his face.

The upload reached 71%.

A final soldier entered carrying an explosive charge.

Harrow tackled him.

The charge activated.

A thirty-second countdown began.

“We have to leave!” Claire shouted.

“The upload will stop if we disconnect,” Michael said.

Nathaniel grabbed the terminal and tore it from the wall.

Battery cables stretched behind it.

“Then we take it.”

We moved into the southern escape tunnel.

Gideon limped between Nathaniel and my father.

My mother carried the portable terminal.

I held the golden chip in my hand.

Behind us, Harrow remained in the bunker fighting the soldier.

“Come on!” I shouted.

He looked toward me.

For one brief moment, he did not look like Shepherd, the vice president, or the man who had controlled Victor Hale.

He looked like an old man who had lost his daughter long ago.

“Claire,” he called.

My mother stopped.

“I did love you.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You loved power more.”

Harrow nodded.

“Yes.”

He slammed the bunker door between us.

The explosion tore through the underground passage.

The force threw us to the ground.

The portable terminal shattered against the wall.

“No!” my father cried.

The upload had reached 94%.

The screen went black.

We emerged from the tunnel near the river.

Military searchlights swept across the grounds.

Nathaniel looked toward the terminal.

“Can it be repaired?”

Michael examined the broken casing.

“Not before they find us.”

I opened my hand.

The golden chip was still there.

A tiny green light flashed along one edge.

My father stared at it.

“The chip has its own transmitter.”

“Did the upload finish?” I asked.

He looked toward the sky.

Every phone in the soldiers’ vehicles began ringing.

News alerts sounded.

The recording appeared on public screens across the country.

100%.

The truth had escaped.

Within minutes, military commanders began refusing the president’s orders.

Members of Congress demanded his immediate arrest.

Federal agents turned their weapons away from us and toward the officers who had ordered the attack.

The president attempted to flee the White House by helicopter.

He was arrested before reaching the lawn.

Jonathan Harrow died in the bunker.

Victor Hale, however, remained missing.

As emergency teams carried Gideon and Nathaniel toward ambulances, my father received a message.

It contained a live video.

Victor stood inside an airport hangar beside a private jet.

Dr. Mercer knelt in front of him with a gun against her head.

Victor smiled into the camera.

“Bring Ruby to me before sunrise.”

May you like

He pulled back the hammer.

“Or the last witness to her birth dies.”
