Chapter 4 - The Long Wait

The minutes dragged by like hours.

I kept Vanessa pinned against the kitchen island, her arm secured behind her back, her breathing coming in ragged, angry gasps. She didn't scream anymore; she realized that shouting wouldn't save her.

“You think you’re so righteous, Daniel,” Vanessa spat out, her cheek pressed flat against the cold marble counter. “You were never here! You were always in some hotel room across the country, chasing your precious deals, ignoring your family! I was the one who had to deal with the screaming kid and the senile old woman! You made me do this!”

“Don't you dare blame your malice on my absence,” I growled, tightening my grip just enough to remind her she had nowhere to run. “I traveled to secure our future. You chose to destroy our family out of greed and pure evil.”

Outside, the heavy, unmistakable wail of police sirens cut through the quiet Greenwich night. Red and blue strobe lights flashed violently through the tall kitchen windows, painting the white marble walls in bleeding shades of crimson and cobalt.

Heavy boots pounded across the front porch. The front door burst open with a resounding crash.

“Greenwich Police! Nobody move!”

Captain Vance, an old family friend whom I had known for fifteen years, led a tactical team into the kitchen with weapons drawn. His eyes darted from me pinning Vanessa against the counter to the terrified expression on my face.

“Daniel? What in God’s name is going on here?” Captain Vance lowered his service weapon slightly, signaling his officers to stand down.

I released Vanessa’s arm. She stumbled forward, gasping for air, rubbing her bruised wrist as she glared at me with pure, undiluted hatred.

I reached into my breast pocket, pulled out the small black micro-SD card, and handed it directly to Captain Vance.

“Arrest my wife, Tom,” I said, my voice dead, hollow, and completely devoid of emotion. “She murdered my mother, she murdered my father, and she’s been systematically abusing my daughter.”

Captain Vance stared at me, his face turning pale as he took the card. He looked at Vanessa, who was now backing away toward the pantry, her eyes wild with panic.

“Cuff her,” Captain Vance ordered quietly to the officers beside him.

Two tactical officers moved forward instantly, grabbing Vanessa’s arms and slapping cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“You’ll never convict me!” Vanessa shrieked as they dragged her toward the front hallway, her voice echoing off the hardwood floors. “You have no jurisdiction! The body was never found! You hear me, Daniel?! You’ll never find her!”

Her screams faded as they escorted her out into the flashing red lights of the squad cars.

The kitchen fell silent once more.

I stood alone in the center of the room, surrounded by the gleaming luxury I had spent my entire life building—a luxury that had turned into a tomb.
