Chapter 6 - The Story She Wanted the World to Believe

By noon, my name was everywhere.
The edited bedroom video spread across social media faster than any legal response could contain it. Commentators replayed the moment I struck the wall. Strangers called me violent. Former classmates claimed they had always sensed something dark beneath my calm personality.
My company removed my biography from its website.
Reporters gathered outside the hospital and our house.
Mercedes released a written statement through an attorney.
She claimed she had spent months trying to protect Lucía from me.
According to her version, the basement surveillance room had been created because she feared I would harm my wife. She said the refinancing documents were part of an effort to preserve family assets after my supposed mental decline.
Every crime became an act of protection.
Every victim became a liar.
Detective Rivas advised me not to speak publicly.
“Anything you say now can be edited, challenged or used to help Mercedes locate weaknesses in the investigation.”
“She has Lucía.”
“We are searching.”
“Searching is not enough.”
I returned to the basement with the forensic team.
The original bedroom recording had to exist somewhere.
The posted clip lasted twenty-three seconds.
The file index showed the full recording lasted eleven minutes.
But the original folder had been wiped.
A technician searched backup drives while I tried to remember the argument.
It had happened after a dinner with my mother.
Lucía had accused me of allowing Mercedes to insult her. I had defended my mother at first.
Then Lucía said something that shamed me.
“You never raise your voice at her. You save all your frustration for me.”
I had struck the wall beside the window—not to frighten Lucía, but because I was furious with myself.
Afterward, I apologized.
I told her she was right.
The missing portion of the recording showed us sitting together on the floor.
It showed me promising we would move away from Mercedes.
A promise I had delayed until it became meaningless.
At three in the afternoon, the technician recovered a fragmented audio file.
The image was damaged, but the voices were clear.
Lucía: “She called my baby illegitimate.”
Me: “I’ll speak to her.”
Lucía: “Speaking changes nothing.”
Me: “What do you want me to do?”
Lucía: “Choose whether I am your wife or a guest in your mother’s family.”
Then came the sound of my hand hitting the wall.
A few seconds later, my voice broke.
“I choose you. I’m sorry it took me this long.”
The audio contradicted Mercedes’ claim, but without video it would not stop the public damage.
Then Javier called from the police station.
“I know where she took Lucía.”
Detective Rivas put the call on speaker.
“How?” he asked.
“Mercedes has a country property under another name. It belonged to a client of my uncle.”
“Address?”
“I want protection first.”
“You are facing conspiracy and fraud charges,” Rivas said. “Cooperation is your protection.”
Javier gave us the location.
An abandoned vineyard stood two hours north of the city. Mercedes had used it for private family gatherings years earlier.
Police prepared to move.
Before we left, a message appeared on my phone from Lucía’s email account.
Come alone or I sign everything.
Attached was a photograph.
Lucía sat at a table inside an unfamiliar room. She was not tied, but Mercedes stood behind her with one hand on her shoulder.
On the table was a confession.
The document claimed I created the hidden surveillance system, forged financial papers and physically intimidated Lucía into remaining married to me.
At the bottom was a blank signature line.
Detective Rivas read the email.
“You cannot go alone.”
“She will know if police follow.”
“We can keep our distance.”
The vineyard sat beyond a narrow road surrounded by dying fields. I parked near the main house as the sun began to set.
No police cars were visible, but I knew Rivas’ team was positioned beyond the tree line.
The front door stood open.
Inside, candles burned along the hallway.
Mercedes waited in the dining room.
Lucía sat at the far end of the table.
“Mateo,” she whispered.
I moved toward her.
Mercedes raised a small remote.
“Take another step and every document in the basement will be sent to federal investigators with your credentials attached.”
“Those documents already belong to the police.”
“Copies, yes. But my files tell a different story.”
She pointed toward the confession.
“Lucía signs. You resign from your company. You transfer the house and family trust to me. Then we all walk away.”
“You expect me to believe you?”
“I expect you to understand leverage.”
Lucía looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
Mercedes struck the table with her palm.
“Stop performing for each other.”
I pulled out a chair and sat down.
“What happened to you?”
My mother’s expression changed.
“What?”
“You were not always like this.”
Her eyes grew colder.
“I sacrificed everything after your father died.”
“You controlled everything before he died.”
“He was weak.”
The answer came too quickly.
I remembered my father’s final months. His confusion. His sudden decline. Mercedes managed his medicine, appointments and legal affairs.
“You forged his signatures too,” I said.
Mercedes did not respond.
“That room belonged to him first, didn’t it?”
“He created the document system.”
“And you used it after he became ill.”
“He would have lost everything.”
“Did he know what you were doing?”
Her silence answered me.
Lucía stared at Mercedes.
“What happened to Mateo’s father?”
Mercedes’ hand tightened around the remote.
“He stopped understanding what the family required.”
A loud crash came from the kitchen.
Police had entered through the rear door.
Mercedes pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
I had activated a signal jammer in my briefcase before entering.
Her face finally showed fear.
Detective Rivas appeared in the doorway.
“Mercedes Álvarez, put down the device.”
My mother stepped behind Lucía and pulled a knife from beneath the table.
The blade pressed against my wife’s neck.
“You always choose strangers over blood,” Mercedes whispered.
Lucía’s eyes met mine.
Then she grabbed Mercedes’ wrist and drove her elbow backward.
The knife fell.
Officers rushed forward.
Mercedes was forced to the floor and handcuffed.
As I reached Lucía, she gasped and grabbed her stomach.
Warm liquid spread across the floor beneath her chair.

“My water broke,” she whispered.
Then her knees gave way.
