Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The foyer of the stripped penthouse fell so silent that the distant hum of the elevator gears sounded like grinding bones.

Grant stood frozen over the medical report. His knees buckled slightly, his polished Italian leather shoes scraping against the bare marble where our antique Persian rug used to lie.

“Pregnant...” Grant whispered, the word dry as sand on his tongue. He looked up at me, his eyes wide and completely hollowed out by disbelief. “You’re pregnant with my baby, Evelyn? Our baby?”

“Don’t listen to her, Grant!” Marjorie shrieked, clutching her designer handbag against her chest as if shielding herself from a physical blow. “It’s a trick! She fabricated that report to humiliate us! She’s trying to steal your focus from Liam!”

“Shut up, Mother!” Grant roared, whirling around with an intensity that made Aubrey flinch and pull the infant against her chest.

It was the first time in his thirty-four years of life that Grant had ever raised his voice at Marjorie Caldwell.

Grant turned back to me, taking two desperate steps toward the inner landing. The arrogant executive who had strutted through the boardroom was gone; in his place was a drowning man grasping for a lifeline made of glass.

“Evie... please,” Grant pleaded, his voice cracking with raw panic. “Let’s go inside. Let’s sit down and talk. We can fix this. Aubrey can go stay at a hotel—I’ll set her up with an allowance, and Liam will be cared for by a nanny. We don't have to divorce. We can raise our child together. This is the Hart-Caldwell union your father wanted!”

I looked at him, feeling neither rage nor sorrow. Just a profound, liberating emptiness.

“My father wanted me to marry a partner, Grant,” I said evenly. “Not a parasite who measures love in trust-fund disbursements. You made your choice when you carried another woman into the ER and declared her your wife before the world.”

“Evelyn, look at me!” he begged, tears welling in his bloodshot eyes. “I was pressured! My mother told me the board was going to oust me if we didn't have an heir this fiscal year! She introduced me to Aubrey! She orchestrated everything!”

“Grant!” Marjorie screamed in horror, her carefully constructed facade crumbling into pure panic. “How dare you blame your own mother!”

“It was you!” Grant yelled back, the bitter truth tearing out of him like poison. “You said Evelyn was too cold, too independent! You told me Aubrey would give us a son and stay quietly in the background while we controlled the Hart trusts!”

Aubrey’s jaw dropped. The sweet, helpless expression on her face hardened into pure venom.

“You coward,” Aubrey spat, glaring at Grant with eyes like flint. “You told me you loved me! You told me Evelyn was an emotionally barren roommate you were stuck with for corporate PR! You swore the penthouse was under my name!”

“Get out of my face, Aubrey!” Grant snapped, losing all composure. “If that DNA test proves what Evelyn’s investigators found, you won't get a single penny from me or my family!”

“Enough,” Marcus Vance announced, stepping between them with two armed court officers. “Mr. Caldwell, Mrs. Caldwell, Miss Lane. Your five minutes have expired. If you do not step into the elevator immediately, you will be taken into custody for criminal trespass and contempt of court.”

Aubrey didn't wait for Grant. She turned on her heel, cradling the infant, and stormed into the elevator without looking back. Marjorie scurried after her, her manicured hands trembling as she pressed the lobby button repeatedly, refusing to meet her son’s gaze.

Grant stood alone on the threshold.

“Evie...” he choked out, reaching for my arm one last time.

The bailiff caught his wrist in an iron grip, twisted him around, and forced him into the waiting elevator car. The doors slid closed, cutting off Grant’s desperate voice mid-sentence.

Marcus exhaled a long breath and looked at me. “Are you alright, Evelyn?”

May you like

I placed a gentle hand over my lower abdomen, where the warmth of a new life had begun to take root.

“I’m better than alright, Marcus,” I said softly. “Now let’s finish dismantling their empire before they realize the ground beneath them has already given way.”
