Chapter 15 - CABIN 24

The abandoned camp looked like the kind of place childhood memories should have lived.

Rusting basketball hoops.

Collapsed picnic tables.

Cabins beneath tall pine trees.

A dry swimming pool filled with leaves.

But that night, it looked like a graveyard.

Federal agents surrounded the property.

Ruiz stayed beside the command vehicle.

I was supposed to remain there too.

I didn't.

“You are not law enforcement,” she snapped.

“I know.”

“Then act like it.”

“Caroline is inside because of my family.”

“She is inside because Elliot kidnapped her.”

The distinction mattered.

Emma had spent years trying to teach me that I was not responsible for other people's crimes.

I was still learning.

Agents entered Cabin 24 at 11:08 p.m.

Empty.

The chair was there.

The rope was there.

Caroline wasn't.

A speaker on the floor suddenly activated.

Elliot's voice.

“Still following clues Emma left behind?”

Then an explosion shook the far side of camp.

Not a massive blast.

A distraction.

Fire erupted near an equipment shed.

Agents shifted.

Ruiz swore.

“He's moving her.”

A vehicle engine roared beyond the trees.

I saw headlights.

A van broke through an old service gate.

Police vehicles pursued.

Then another engine started behind us.

Decoy.

Elliot had prepared two vehicles.

Ruiz pointed.

“That one!”

A black pickup accelerated toward the opposite road.

Inside the passenger seat, I saw Caroline.

The pursuit lasted twelve minutes.

It ended at a bridge.

Elliot stopped the truck sideways.

Caroline stumbled out.

He held a gun.

Police surrounded them from both directions.

I arrived behind Ruiz.

“Stay back.”

Elliot saw me.

Of course he did.

“Daniel!”

His voice carried across the bridge.

“Bring me the ledger!”

I didn't have it.

The FBI did.

But Elliot didn't know.

“I want Caroline first.”

He laughed.

“You people still think rules matter.”

Caroline suddenly shouted.

“Daniel, don't!”

Elliot struck her.

I moved instinctively.

Ruiz grabbed my arm.

“Don't give him what he wants.”

Elliot pointed the weapon toward Caroline.

Then headlights appeared behind the police line.

Another vehicle.

Nathan stepped out.

Agents shouted at him to stay back.

He ignored them.

“Elliot!”

Everything stopped.

Elliot stared.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“Nathan?”

His voice became a child's voice.

A younger brother's voice.

Nathan walked forward slowly.

“You were supposed to be dead,” Elliot whispered.

“So were you, in a way.”

“You left me.”

“I ran because Charles tried to kill me.”

“You left me with them.”

“I know.”

Elliot's gun trembled.

“I spent twelve years fixing what they did.”

“No,” Nathan said. “You spent twelve years becoming them.”

Elliot's face twisted.

“They took everything.”

“And you took Emma.”

Silence.

Nathan moved another step.

“She offered you a way out.”

Elliot began crying.

“You don't know what happened.”

“I know you called me from the hospital.”

The officers around us went still.

Nathan continued.

“You told me she was gone.”

Elliot's breathing changed.

“She wouldn't stop.”

Caroline looked toward Ruiz.

Body cameras recorded everything.

“She was going to expose me.”

Nathan nodded sadly.

“So you injected her.”

Elliot's face collapsed.

“I just needed time.”

“You killed her.”

“She was already bleeding!”

There it was.

A confession.

Clear.

Recorded.

Elliot seemed to realize it too late.

He raised the gun.

Not toward Caroline.

Toward Nathan.

A shot cracked.

I dropped.

Officers fired.

Elliot fell.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then agents rushed forward.

Caroline was pulled away.

Nathan was unharmed.

Elliot had been struck in the shoulder and leg.

Alive.

As paramedics carried him toward an ambulance, he looked at me.

“You think this ends it?”

I walked closer.

“Yes.”

“You don't know how many people Charles had.”

“No.”

I looked at the agents collecting evidence.

“But now we know where to look.”

Elliot laughed weakly.

Then his eyes found Lily.

She had arrived with Mark after police secured the scene.

I was furious that Mark brought her.

Until I saw what happened.

Elliot stared at my daughter.

Lily stared back.

No fear.

No hiding.

No silence.

“You look like Emma,” he whispered.

Lily took my hand.

Then she said five words.

“My mommy was braver than you.”

May you like

Elliot looked away.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, the man who had frightened everyone had nothing left to say.
