Chapter 11 - The Secret of the Commercial Lots

The living room of my house was quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the gentle rustle of old, yellowed paper turning in my hands. I read Evelyn’s final diary entry aloud to Patrick and Jason, each word carrying the weight of decades-old vindication.
“...I have hidden the deeds to the three commercial lots on Cactus Road in the bank vault,” Evelyn’s neat, sharp cursive read. “Brenda spent years trying to convince me to sign them over to her event business front company. When I refused, she threatened to cut me off from my granddaughters. I knew what she was doing. I transferred the house directly to Alyssa because Alyssa is the only one in this family with an honest heart. But those commercial lots? They are worth over a million dollars now. They are to be used to build a new life for Patrick and Alyssa, far away from Brenda’s toxic shadow.”
I stopped reading. The silence in the kitchen was profound.
"A million dollars?" Jason whistled, staring wide-eyed at the legal plot maps we had pulled from the safety deposit box earlier. "Sis, those lots sit right on the prime retail corridor. Developers have been trying to buy into that block for five years."
Patrick shook his head slowly, looking at me with immense pride and affection. "Your grandmother always knew what she was doing. She wanted us to have security—real security that nobody could ever take away."
"We aren't keeping it all," I said immediately, sliding the plot maps toward the center of the island. "Half of this trust belongs to you, Dad. You lost twenty-two years of your life because of Brenda’s lies. You deserve to rebuild everything."
Patrick reached out, covering my hand with his warm, calloused palm. "My reward isn't the land, Alyssa. It’s sitting right here in this kitchen, eating tacos with my daughter and my son after twenty-two years in the dark. That’s worth more than all the gold in Arizona."
Jason grinned, raising his glass of iced tea. "Hear, hear. To new beginnings."
We spent the rest of the afternoon mapping out our next steps. With Detective Miller’s official report and Evelyn’s diary entered into evidence, Brenda’s criminal charges for extortion and harassment were upgraded. Furthermore, her attempts to fraudulently claim guardianship over Aunt Laura’s finances were brought before a family court judge the very next morning.
By Wednesday, Aunt Laura had been safely moved out of her old apartment and into a bright, peaceful assisted living facility just ten minutes away from my house—fully funded by a preliminary disbursement from the commercial trust.
