Chapter 23 - The Poisoned Scent

The package arrived the following morning at 9:00 AM via registered courier.
It was a lacquered cedarwood music box, polished to a mirror shine, adorned with an antique silver clasp. Attached to the handle was a small envelope addressed in elegant, vintage cursive: For Faith, on her eighth year of life. From an old friend of Elena.
Miles ran the box through the entryway X-ray scanner. "No explosives. No electronic detonators. Internal mechanical gears, brass music cylinder."
"Who signed for it at the lobby desk?" Jared asked, inspecting the courier receipt.
"Standard delivery service. Driver picked it up from a locker in Grand Central," Miles said, prying the latch open with a carbon-fiber tool.
The lid sprang open. A delicate, crystalline melody began to chime—a haunting rendition of Brahms’ Lullaby. Nestled in black velvet was a silver music cylinder alongside a vintage perfume atomizer filled with lavender mist.
In the living room, Roman suddenly shot up.
His head tilted, ears pinned flat. Then, without warning, the Mastiff let out an ear-piercing, blood-curdling howl.
"Roman, quiet!" Willa called out, walking out of the guest suite.
Roman didn't stop. He began tearing across the hallway, snapping at the air, his eyes bloodshot and dilated until the pupils almost swallowed the brown irises. White foam gathered at the corners of his mouth. He slammed his body against the reinforced entryway glass doors, snarling with such ferocity that the thick pane vibrated.
"Get back!" Jared shoved Willa behind him, drawing his firearm. "Miles, what was in that box?!"
Miles dropped the atomizer. "It wasn't perfume. The moment the latch broke, the aerosol pressurized. It’s an airborne synthetic pheromone—canine adrenal stimulant mixed with wolf territorial scent."
Roman threw his 160-pound weight against the wood door frame, splintering the molding. The beast was completely consumed by chemical rage, incapable of recognizing voices, uniforms, or commands.
"He's in a blind psychosis!" Willa shouted over the deafening snarls. "The scent triggered an immediate fight-or-flight predatory reflex! If you shoot him with a tranquilizer, his elevated heart rate will cause cardiac arrest!"
From the end of the hall, the bedroom door opened.

"Roman?" Faith’s small voice called out in confusion. Holding her cane, the little blind girl took a step into the corridor. "Why are you angry?"
The scent-crazed Mastiff locked onto the sound. He turned, his lips peeled back over four-inch canines, dripping saliva, and charged directly down the narrow hallway toward the blind child.
