Chapter 12 - What Gino Kept

Dust swallowed the loading chamber.

Rocco heard children crying inside the trucks.

Antonio seized Gino by the collar before he could escape.

“Where is the lower-level release?”

Gino coughed.

“Control room.”

“Code?”

Gino smiled through blood.

“Ask Ray.”

Antonio struck him.

Clara grabbed Rocco’s radio.

“Sierra, stay where you are. We’re opening the doors.”

“The ceiling is coming down!”

Rocco looked toward the control room above the loading area.

The metal staircase had collapsed.

A conveyor belt climbed along the opposite wall.

“I’ll go,” Clara said.

“No.”

“I’m smaller and my ankle isn’t broken.”

Before Rocco could stop her, she climbed onto the conveyor frame.

Danner saw her.

He fired.

The bullet struck the metal beside her hand.

Rocco returned fire, forcing Danner behind the railing.

Antonio dragged Gino toward cover.

“Go after the girl,” he told Rocco. “I’ve waited this long. I can handle my brother for another minute.”

Rocco climbed after Clara.

The conveyor shook beneath them. Rocks fell from the ceiling. Clara reached the control platform and kicked open the door.

Inside, monitors showed the holding rooms below.

Sierra knelt beside a thin blond woman chained to a pipe. Other captives crowded behind a reinforced door.

Naomi was alive.

Clara searched the control panel.

“There are six switches.”

Rocco entered.

“Which opens the lower level?”

“Nothing is labeled.”

A timer appeared on the central screen.

Four minutes.

Danner had initiated a complete tunnel collapse.

Rocco examined the wiring. Red cables ran from each door switch, but a separate black cable connected to the ventilation controls.

Ray once told him never to trust the choice placed directly in front of him. Powerful men loved false decisions.

Rocco pulled the black cable.

Every lower-level door opened.

Sierra’s voice came through the radio.

“We’re moving!”

Another explosion shook the platform.

The floor split between Rocco and Clara.

She fell.

Rocco caught her wrist.

For one second, she hung over the loading chamber forty feet below.

“Don’t let go,” she said.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“That’s good, because I’ve decided what rebuilding the bakery means.”

“Tell me after I pull you up.”

“I’m motivating you.”

He dragged her over the edge.

They reached the loading floor as Sierra and Naomi emerged from the lower tunnel with the captives.

Naomi stumbled when she saw Gino.

“You.”

Sierra wrapped an arm around her.

“He can’t hurt you again.”

Gino looked at Naomi with no recognition.

That wounded her more deeply than hatred might have.

“You don’t remember me,” she whispered.

Gino shrugged.

“I remember many girls.”

Sierra raised her gun.

Rocco stepped between them.

“Don’t.”

“He stole six years.”

“If you kill him now, he becomes a dead criminal. Alive, he becomes evidence.”

“I don’t care about evidence.”

Naomi touched her sister’s arm.

“I do.”

Sierra looked at her.

Naomi’s voice trembled.

“I want every person who helped him to hear my name.”

The timer reached two minutes.

Mercer arrived with three miners and began loading captives into the lead truck.

“The western passage is clear!”

Danner fired from above.

The bullet struck Mercer in the shoulder.

Clara aimed, but Antonio stopped her.

“Not from here. You might hit the detonator.”

Rocco climbed the rail stairs toward Danner.

The developer backed across the platform.

“You think this town will thank you?” Danner shouted. “They sold their land willingly.”

“You threatened their children.”

“They still signed.”

“You gave them a choice between hunger and surrender.”

“That is still a choice.”

Rocco reached the platform.

Danner fired.

The bullet grazed Rocco’s side.

Rocco struck the gun away and drove Danner against the railing.

Below them, the final truck moved toward the exit.

The timer showed forty seconds.

Danner laughed.

“You kill me, you die here.”

“I’m not going to kill you.”

Danner’s smile widened.

Then Rocco handcuffed him to the support rail using the restraints taken from the holding room.

Danner’s expression changed.

“Wait.”

Rocco took the detonator.

“You said people should live with their choices.”

He turned away.

Danner screamed after him.

The support platform collapsed before Rocco reached the stairs.

Clara ran back into the dust.

“Rocco!”

A hand emerged from beneath a fallen beam.

Clara and Antonio lifted together until Rocco crawled free.

They reached the final truck as the tunnel folded behind them.

The vehicle burst through the western entrance seconds before the mine collapsed.

A wave of dust rolled across Black Hollow Road.

For several moments, no one moved.

Then Clara pulled Rocco from the truck.

“You’re bleeding.”

“I’ve been doing that all week.”

She struck him across the chest.

He stared at her.

“That hurt.”

“You left Danner chained inside.”

“He made a choice.”

“That was not the part I was angry about.”

Her voice broke.

“You went back alone.”

Rocco looked at her.

He had spent his life surrounded by people who feared losing what he could provide.

Clara was furious because she had nearly lost him.

Before he could answer, federal vehicles appeared along the east road.

Sierra’s files had reached the judge.

Agents surrounded Gino and the surviving guards.

Gino stood beside the ruined mine with his wrists bound.

“You think this ends with me?” he called to Rocco. “The family will tear you apart.”

Rocco looked at Antonio and Lucia.

Then at Clara, Samuel, Sierra, Naomi, Mercer, and the people of Cedar Hollow.

“No,” he said. “The family is already standing here.”

Gino’s expression twisted.

As agents led him away, he shouted one final secret.

“Ask Antonio why Ray never brought him home!”

Rocco turned toward his father.

Antonio’s face had gone still.

The victory around them suddenly felt incomplete.

“What did he mean?” Rocco asked.

Antonio looked toward the ruined mountain.

“Ray did not keep me away from Boston.”

“Then who did?”

May you like

Antonio met his son’s eyes.

“I did.”
