Chapter 11 - The Chapel Trap

The archive contained more than crimes committed by the Romanos and Morettis.
It contained victims.
Children.
Patients.
People recorded without consent.
Survivors whose lives could be destroyed again if the files became public.
Destroying the system would trigger release.
Opening it incorrectly would do the same.
Leaving it intact would preserve the power of anyone who gained access.
Lorenzo had built a perfect prison.
Celeste explained the two-part encryption.
Sophia’s implant held the evolving numerical seed.
Celeste possessed a phrase key memorized twenty-five years earlier.
Together, they could access the archive through one remaining terminal beneath Saint Agnes.
“Why did you never expose Vittorio?” Sophia asked.
“Because exposure would punish his victims before it punished him.”
“Why not go to the authorities privately?”
Celeste gave a tired smile.
“Half the authorities were inside the archive.”
Alessandro stood near the window.
“Vittorio believes the terminal still exists.”
“He knows it does.”
“Then he will go there.”
“Only if he believes he has both keys.”
They returned to New York with Celeste hidden in a medical transport vehicle.
During the drive, Alessandro developed the trap.
The estate released a statement that the wedding had been postponed because of a private family emergency. Sophia remained publicly accused. Isabella’s location was described as unknown.
Then Alessandro contacted Vittorio.
“I will complete the marriage,” he said.
Silence answered.
Vittorio’s laugh came slowly.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expect you to understand the alternative. If the archive opens, both families burn.”
“You have Celeste.”
“I have Sophia. Celeste is dead.”
“You are a poor liar.”
“Then attend the chapel tomorrow and prove it.”
“What do you want?”
“Emma’s safety. Sophia cleared. The archive divided between us.”
“You sound like your father.”
“That is what you always wanted.”
The chapel was restored overnight.
Broken flowers were replaced.
Blood was scrubbed from the service halls.
The same musicians returned under police protection, unaware of the full plan.
Only twelve people attended the second ceremony.
Lucia.
Sophia.
Emma.
Celeste, disguised beneath a dark veil.
Cole and selected officers hidden in the choir loft.
Hayes.
Two attorneys.
Vittorio.
Isabella.
And Alessandro.
Isabella wore a simple white gown.
No diamonds.
No long veil.
The polished bride had disappeared. Her face looked sleepless and sharp.
She stopped before Alessandro.
“You came back.”
“I never left.”
Her eyes moved toward Sophia.
Sophia wore a black dress and stood beside Lucia with Emma in her arms.
“She should not be here,” Isabella said.
“She is family.”
Pain crossed Isabella’s face.
“You knew her for less than a day.”
“I knew what you did to her in less than seven minutes.”
The priest opened his book.
Vittorio watched from the first pew.
The ceremony began.
Every word felt unreal.
Commitment.
Honor.
Truth.
When the priest asked whether anyone knew a reason the marriage should not proceed, Emma lifted her head from Sophia’s shoulder.
“She uses the other voice.”
Sophia whispered, “Not now, sweetheart.”
But Alessandro looked at the child.
“Let her speak.”
Emma pointed toward Isabella.
“She said my mommy was dirt.”
Isabella’s face flushed.
“She said nobody would believe us.”
The chapel remained silent.
Emma touched Sophia’s cheek.
“But Mister believed.”
Alessandro felt the words settle in him.
Not praise.
Responsibility.
Isabella turned toward the altar.
“Can we continue?”
The priest looked at Alessandro.
He nodded.
The vows proceeded until the rings were presented.
Isabella held Alessandro’s hand.
Her fingers were cold.
The priest asked whether he accepted her as his wife.
Alessandro looked into the face he had once believed he loved.
“No.”
Vittorio stood.
The chapel doors locked automatically.
Cole’s officers moved into position above.
Alessandro removed the hidden microphone from his collar.
“The ceremony was never real.”
Isabella’s hand tightened around his.
“You humiliated me twice.”
“You abducted a child twice.”
“I protected my family.”
“You became your father.”
She struck him.
The sound echoed through the chapel.
Vittorio reached inside his coat.
Cole’s voice came from the choir loft.
“Hands where we can see them.”
Officers appeared.
Vittorio slowly raised his hands.
Alessandro turned toward Celeste.
She removed the veil.
Isabella stopped breathing.
Her mother stood twenty feet away.
Alive.
“Isabella,” Celeste said.
The bride’s face became that of a frightened child.
“Mama?”
Celeste stepped forward.
“I tried to come back for you.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
“Your father found me before I reached the border. He kept me at Saint Agnes. Elena helped me escape during the fire.”
“You left me.”
“I was imprisoned.”
“You left me with him.”
“I am sorry.”
Vittorio’s calm finally broke.
“Do not listen to her.”
Isabella looked at him.
“You told me she died because Lucia set the fire.”
“She is confused.”
“You showed me her bracelet.”
“I protected you from an unstable woman.”
Celeste removed the matching bracelet from beneath her sleeve.
“Elena placed another patient’s body in my room.”
Isabella moved backward.
The foundation beneath her life began collapsing visibly.
Vittorio saw it.
He drew a small pistol from an ankle holster.
Cole fired from the loft.
The bullet struck the altar beside Vittorio as he pulled Sophia against his chest.
The gun pressed beneath her jaw.
Emma screamed.
Alessandro raised his weapon.
Vittorio smiled.
“You cannot shoot through your own sister.”
Sophia remained still.
Her eyes found Alessandro’s.
Trust passed between them.
Vittorio dragged her toward the side door.
“You will take us to Saint Agnes.”
“The building burned,” Alessandro said.
“The building did.”
Vittorio pressed the weapon harder against Sophia’s neck.
“The archive did not.”
Isabella stood near the altar, staring at her mother.
Then she bent and picked up the wedding ring from the floor.
For a moment, Alessandro thought she might help Vittorio.
Instead, she threw the ring at her father’s face.
Sophia dropped.
Alessandro fired.
The bullet struck Vittorio’s shoulder.
Cole’s officers rushed forward.
But Isabella ran to her father and pulled him through the side door.
A blast shook the chapel.
Smoke and stone filled the aisle.
When Alessandro reached the garden, Vittorio and Isabella were gone.
Sophia lay beside the altar holding her bleeding arm.
On the floor near her was a note Isabella had pressed into her hand.
