Chapter 14 - The Last HouseMy father’s face was swollen.

My mother was breathing, but blood darkened the snow beneath her head.

Vittorio had reached the safe house before us.

He had taken them while Crane’s remaining officers transferred Caterina.

“How?” Adrien asked.

Vittorio smiled.

“You still think Cross was my highest-ranking servant.”

A man stepped from the kitchen.

Commissioner Elias Crane.

Sofia had been right from the beginning.

Do not trust the man who says he loved me.

Crane held a gun at Marco’s back.

My stomach dropped.

“You routed the upload,” I said.

“I routed selected files.”

“You said you wanted the truth released.”

“I wanted Cross destroyed.”

Vittorio laughed.

“Elias always wanted the throne without admitting he admired the king.”

Crane’s jaw tightened.

“I never admired you.”

“No. You envied me.”

Adrien looked at Crane.

“You helped Vittorio fake his death.”

“Yes.”

“And kept Caterina under Cross’s control.”

Crane’s expression flickered.

“That was not supposed to happen.”

Sofia opened her eyes.

“You always say that after betraying someone.”

Crane looked at her.

“I saved Lena more times than you know.”

“You also gave Vittorio the safe-house address.”

“He had Vincent.”

“You chose him.”

“I chose the city.”

Sofia laughed weakly.

“You chose power.”

Vittorio moved behind Vincent.

“The original drive survived?”

I said nothing.

He pointed the gun at my father’s head.

“Lena.”

Adrien moved slightly.

Crane pressed his weapon harder into Marco’s spine.

“No heroics.”

Vittorio continued.

“The drive contains accounts worth billions. Names powerful enough to control elections. Judges, senators, executives.”

“It also contains evidence that will destroy you.”

“Only if authenticated.”

I reached into my coat.

The drive was no longer there.

Adrien had taken it during the drive north.

He stepped forward.

“I have it.”

Vittorio’s eyes lit up.

“Of course. My almost-son.”

Adrien held the drive between two fingers.

“Release Vincent and Sofia.”

“No.”

“Then you never receive it.”

Vittorio smiled.

“You believe death frightens me?”

“No. Irrelevance frightens you.”

The smile vanished.

“You built an empire to make your name permanent,” Adrien continued. “But your name will become a warning. Your fortune will pay survivors. Your companies will be dismantled. Your portraits will burn.”

Vittorio raised the gun toward him.

“You sound like your mother.”

“She survived you.”

“She became me.”

Caterina’s voice came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She stood supported by Emily Blake.

Marcus was beside them.

Federal agents filled the snowy trees behind the cabin.

Crane spun toward the door.

Marco struck him.

The two men crashed into the table.

Gunfire exploded.

Vittorio pulled Vincent in front of him.

Adrien threw the drive toward me.

I caught it and dropped behind the fireplace.

Sofia grabbed Vittorio’s ankle.

He kicked her away.

Vincent drove his chair backward, slamming Vittorio into the wall.

The gun fired.

Vincent collapsed.

“Dad!”

I ran toward him.

Vittorio aimed at me.

Adrien stepped into the line of fire.

The bullet struck his chest.

He fell.

Something inside me broke.

I picked up the nearest weapon and aimed at Vittorio.

He smiled.

“Do it.”

My hands shook.

He wanted me to kill him.

He wanted his violence to become my inheritance.

Adrien struggled to breathe.

“Lena…”

Vittorio opened his arms.

“Prove you belong to this family.”

I lowered the gun.

“No.”

His smile faded.

“You do not get to decide who I become.”

Vittorio raised his weapon again.

A shot rang out.

He looked down.

Blood spread across his chest.

Caterina held the smoking gun.

“This family ends with you.”

Vittorio fell beside the fire.

This time, he did not rise.

Federal agents entered.

Crane was arrested.

Marco secured the cabin.

I dropped beside Adrien.

Blood covered his shirt.

“No, no, no.”

He opened his eyes.

“The vest.”

I tore open his coat.

The bullet had flattened against the armor, but the impact had injured his ribs.

I laughed and cried at the same time.

“You could have told me.”

“There was not time.”

I hit his shoulder.

He winced.

“Please stop doing that.”

Vincent groaned nearby.

His bullet had struck the side of his abdomen.

Paramedics rushed toward him.

Sofia held his hand.

Marcus knelt beside Emily.

Police approached him with cuffs.

He looked at me.

“I know.”

He did not run.

He held out his hands.

For once, Marcus accepted the consequences of what he had done.

Morning light appeared over Bellweather Lake as they carried the injured from the cabin.

Vittorio’s body was taken under federal guard.

No staged funeral.

No false identity.

No escape.

Adrien sat beside me in the ambulance.

His hand found mine.

“What happens now?” I asked.

“I surrender.”

“After all this?”

“Especially after all this.”

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I understood.

A happy ending built on another hidden crime would eventually become another cage.

“How long?” I whispered.

“I don’t know.”

I leaned my head against his shoulder.

For the first time since running barefoot into The Velvet Crown, there was no one chasing me.

May you like

But the man who had protected me was walking willingly toward a prison cell.

And I did not know whether love could survive freedom arriving at the wrong time.
