Chapter 3 - Damian’s Secret Company

DVC Holdings sounded harmless.

It wasn’t.

Federal investigators found that Damian had transferred money into DVC through fake restoration vendors.

Invoices listed roofing work.

Masonry.

Electrical upgrades.

Some job addresses didn’t exist.

Others belonged to properties Moretti Restoration had never touched.

Damian would approve payments.

Money moved to shell vendors.

Then percentages traveled into DVC Holdings.

Commissioner Darren Carter denied knowing anything.

His attorney called the payments legitimate consulting fees.

Then Naomi Chen returned to New York.

She walked into Marcus’s office carrying a laptop and enough documentation to make Carter’s attorney stop smiling.

Naomi was forty-three, small, precise, and completely unimpressed by wealthy men.

“I don’t believe in coincidences that repeat quarterly,” she said.

She had traced payments.

Every time Hudson Crest Communities needed a zoning variance, permit exception, or expedited inspection, DVC Holdings received money within weeks.

Damian was one source.

There were others.

“This is bigger than your brother,” Naomi told me.

That should have comforted me.

It didn’t.

Because Dad had discovered part of a network involving developers, contractors, and public officials.

The house was only one project.

But it mattered.

Hudson Crest wanted our six acres for a gated development.

Current zoning made the project difficult.

Darren Carter could help.

Damian apparently offered the land before Dad died.

Dad refused.

So Damian needed control.

First through inheritance.

Then through me.

Marcus obtained more emails.

DAMIAN: Victor won’t move.

VANESSA: Then wait.

DAMIAN: Elena gets the house if the old will stands.

VANESSA: She’s soft. She’ll sign.

DAMIAN: You don’t know her.

VANESSA: Everyone signs when the alternative becomes uncomfortable enough.

I stared at that sentence.

Uncomfortable enough.

Broken ribs.

Blood.

A fist over my face.

Vanessa had known exactly what she meant.

Police added conspiracy and coercion-related charges.

Her attorneys claimed the messages referred to legal pressure.

Nobody believed them.

Then investigators found another email.

Sent by Hudson Crest executive Graham Pike.

GRAHAM: We need title certainty before year end. Carter says zoning can be handled if land closes.

DAMIAN: I’m dealing with family issues.

GRAHAM: Deal faster.

Family issues.

Me.

Dad.

Our entire lives reduced to an obstacle between men and property.

The district attorney petitioned to preserve the house as potential evidence because of Dad’s safe.

I stayed with my best friend Rachel in White Plains.

Every night, I woke imagining Damian outside.

He was being held without immediate release because prosecutors argued he was a threat to me and might tamper with evidence.

Vanessa posted bail with restrictions.

That terrified me more.

She couldn’t contact me.

But she could still move.

One afternoon, I received an email from an unknown account.

YOU HAVE WHAT THEY WANT.

SELL THE HOUSE AND WALK AWAY.

Marcus reported it.

I asked the obvious question.

“Who are ‘they’?”

Nobody knew.

Then the official probate fight began.

Damian’s attorney challenged Dad’s will.

He claimed Dad lacked capacity.

Marcus responded with medical records showing Dad remained competent.

Damian then claimed I manipulated Dad.

That was almost funny.

For the final year of Dad’s life, I visited every Sunday.

Damian saw him daily at work.

If anyone had influence, it wasn’t me.

Then Damian’s lawyers challenged the secret revised will.

They argued it was fake.

Marcus agreed it needed authentication.

The notary was located.

Her name was Lillian Cho.

She remembered Dad.

Very clearly.

Victor had come to her office with two witnesses.

He was nervous.

“He asked me whether a will could be hidden until after death,” she told investigators.

“What did you say?”

“That depends on how it was stored and whether people could later prove validity.”

“Did he explain why?”

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“He said his son was stealing from him.”

The witnesses confirmed.

The revised will was real.

That meant Damian’s inheritance depended on whether theft could be proven.

Naomi’s records made that increasingly likely.

Marcus smiled after the hearing.

“He attacked you for a house worth three million while risking an estate worth closer to seven.”

“Greed isn’t good at math.”

“No.”

But the biggest financial surprise was still ahead.

Dad owned seventy percent of Moretti Restoration.

Damian owned fifteen.

A longtime employee trust owned the rest.

Under the revised will, Dad’s shares would pass to the community trust if Damian’s theft was established.

Damian had always assumed he would control the company.

He was wrong.

That made Moretti Restoration suddenly worth fighting for too.

Then Naomi discovered that Damian had secretly pledged his fifteen-percent company interest as collateral for a private loan.

Amount:

$1.2 million.

Lender:

Hudson Crest Capital.

Marcus stared at the contract.

“He’s financially trapped.”

“If he doesn’t deliver the house?”

“His loan may default.”

“So he beat me because he needed the property to cover his debt?”

“Possibly.”

Naomi shook her head.

“No.”

We looked at her.

“This loan wasn’t personal.”

“What?”

She pointed to a schedule.

“The money went somewhere.”

“Where?”

She traced transfers.

The $1.2 million entered Damian’s account.

Within three days, $900,000 moved into another entity.

Vale Meridian LLC.

Registered in Delaware.

Naomi pulled incorporation records.

Beneficial owner hidden.

Federal investigators obtained it.

The owner was Vanessa Moretti.

My sister-in-law.

“What was she doing with nine hundred thousand dollars?”

Naomi found the answer.

Luxury condo in Miami.

Cash purchase.

Damian had borrowed against his business to buy Vanessa a secret property.

Except records showed Vanessa had recently listed the condo for sale.

She was preparing money.

For what?

Running?

Leaving Damian?

Or protecting herself?

The answer came two days later.

Vanessa requested a meeting with prosecutors.

May you like

Without Damian.

And suddenly, the woman who had told my brother to “finish it” was preparing to betray him.
