Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

With Chloe’s evidence in hand, the dynamic of our conflict shifted entirely. Gavin was no longer just an arrogant brother who threw a single, isolated tantrum; he was a systemic abuser who posed a documented threat to the women and children in his life.
Sarah Jenkins moved swiftly. We integrated Chloe’s sworn affidavit and photographic evidence into our legal filings, creating a mountain of documentation that Gavin’s legal team couldn't simply hand-wave away with family influence.
Two days later, Gavin was officially served with a temporary restraining order while at his corporate job.
The immediate fallout was nuclear.
My father, realizing that public opinion and legal standing were rapidly slipping away from them, abandoned his aggressive tactics and shifted to manipulation. He called me from a new, unblocked number late on Friday evening.
"Gemma," my father’s voice was remarkably calm, almost gentle—a eerie contrast to the man who had screamed at me three days prior. "We need to talk like adults. No lawyers, no police, no court dates. Just father and daughter."
"I don't have anything to say to you, Dad," I replied, sitting at my desk with my recording application running on my laptop.
"Listen to me, sweetheart," he pleaded softly. "Gavin was served with papers today at his office. Do you have any idea what this does to his career? He was up for a major promotion next month! If his firm finds out about a restraining order, he’ll be fired. He could lose his home. Is that really what you want? To ruin your brother’s entire future over one mistake?"
"He ruined his own future the moment he raised his hand against Maisie, Dad," I said coldly. "And he ruined it even further by abusing Chloe."
Silence fell over the line. For five long seconds, my father didn't speak. When he did, the gentle facade dropped entirely, replaced by the icy, calculated tone of a man who viewed people as disposable assets.
"Chloe is a confused girl who doesn't know what she’s talking about," Donald snapped. "And you are being foolish. You think you’re being strong, Gemma? You’re alone. You’re a single mother living in a rented apartment with no family support network. You think you can afford a drawn-out legal fight with me? I have spent forty years building wealth and connections in this city. I will bleed your savings dry before this ever hits a courtroom judge."
"Is that a promise, Dad?"
"It’s a reality check," he said chillingly. "You have until Monday morning to drop the petition. If you don't, I will hire every private investigator in this state to go through your past, your parenting, your finances, and your mental health record. By the time I’m finished, child protective services won't just be looking at Gavin—they’ll be looking at whether you are fit to keep Maisie."
The threat was so grotesque, so devoid of human affection, that it chilled me to the bone. He was willing to destroy my life and put my child into foster care just to protect his son’s corporate promotion.
"Thank you, Dad," I said quietly.
"For what?" he grunted.
"For finally showing me who you really are," I said, and hung up the phone.
I didn't panic. I didn't cry. Instead, I saved the audio file of the recording, named it Donald_Threat_Call.wav, and uploaded it directly into the master legal drive.
My family thought they were luring me into a corner. They thought their money, their status, and their cruel threats would break my spirit and force me into submission.

What they didn't know was that every threat they made, every call they placed, and every desperate move they executed was being meticulously cataloged. They were building their own cage, bar by bar.
And the trial date was only three weeks away.
