Chapter 5 - Susan’s Desperate Betrayal

By 2:00 PM, news of Richard Henderson’s dramatic arrest in the bank lobby had spread across the local business sector like wildfire. Apex Maritime stock plummeted fourteen percent in intraday trading as rumors of an executive freeze circulated through the ports.

Across town, Susan Henderson paced the marble floors of their gated suburban mansion, her designer heels clicking frantically against the tile. With Richard locked in a holding cell downtown and his legal team refusing to return her calls, panic had completely unraveled her polished exterior.

“Tyler, get off that stupid video game and pack the duffel bags!” Susan shrieked into the second-floor hallway. “We need the passports and whatever jewelry isn't registered on the joint insurance!”

Tyler appeared at the top of the stairs, pale and bewildered. “Mom, Dad told us Chloe took everything. The bank frozen his personal credit cards too! I tried to pay for gas and the card was declined!”

“Your father is a fool who let a dead woman outsmart him!” Susan spat, throwing open the safe behind the living room painting. Inside, only a few thousand dollars in emergency cash remained; the offshore wire codes were gone, locked down by the federal freeze. “There’s only one way out of this. Chloe’s apartment. Margaret must have kept the backup drive with the personal encryption codes in that miserable little flat on Market Street.”

“Mom, we can’t go there,” Tyler protested, backing away. “The police—”

“The police are busy with your father!” Susan grabbed a pair of leather driving gloves and a heavy crowbar from the garage toolbox. “If we destroy those original ledgers before they reach the federal grand jury, Richard’s lawyers can file an injunction to unfreeze the primary family trust. We get fifty percent by default as surviving dependents. Move!”

Forty minutes later, a silver Mercedes with tinted windows pulled into the narrow alleyway behind my apartment building. Susan wrapped a silk scarf over her head, tucked the crowbar under her trench coat, and slipped through the rear service door while Tyler waited behind the wheel with the engine idling.

She climbed the creaking wooden stairs to the third floor, stopping in front of apartment 3B—my door.

With a frantic grunt, Susan jammed the crowbar into the door frame, splintering the old wood until the deadbolt snapped with a loud crack. She kicked the door open and rushed inside, ransacking the modest room. She tore through the drawers, flipped the sofa cushions, and smashed Grandma’s porcelain tea set against the wall in a frenzy.

“Where is it? Where did that little rat hide it?!” Susan screamed, ripping open the closet.

“Looking for this, Susan?”

Susan froze.

Sitting in the armchair in the corner of the dim living room was Detective Miller, flanked by two plainclothes officers. On the small coffee table sat a high-resolution wireless security camera, its green lens glowing steadily as it transmitted live footage directly to the precinct server.

“Drop the weapon, Mrs. Henderson,” Miller said calmly, not even bothering to unholster his sidearm.

Susan dropped the crowbar with a clatter, her hands trembling violently. “I... I was just checking on my stepdaughter! The door was unlocked! Chloe asked me to retrieve some family heirlooms!”

“Is that why you’re wearing gloves and broke through two heavy-duty deadbolts?” Miller stood up, holding up an active tablet showing the timestamped exterior recording of Tyler waiting in the getaway car below. “Officers just intercepted your son in the alley with two forged offshore bearer bonds and three unregistered passports hidden under his spare tire.”

“No... no, Tyler doesn't know anything! This is a misunderstanding!”

“Save it for the judge,” Miller replied coldly as the female officer cuffed Susan’s wrists behind her back. “Breaking and entering, tampering with evidence in an active federal investigation, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. You and Richard will have plenty of time to catch up in federal court.”

As Susan was dragged down the wooden stairs screaming obscenities, neighbors stepped out into the hallway to watch. For years, she had looked down on working people with disgust; now, her mugshot was about to lead the evening news.
