CHAPTER 6: THE LAST THORNE SECRET

Arthur and Julian escaped through the mining road behind the lodge.

By the time officers reached the rear property, the vehicle was gone.

Audrey’s blood was found near the passenger door.

Not much.

Enough to terrify me.

Miriam was airlifted to surgery under federal guard. Claire Cross was rescued. Evan was found alive in the cellar, bruised but unharmed.

Rebecca led investigators to a section of ground near the reservoir where Arthur had once forbidden anyone to walk.

Cadaver dogs alerted within minutes.

Caroline’s remains were beneath a row of decorative stones.

The discovery gave federal prosecutors another charge, but none of it mattered to me while Audrey was missing.

Elena established a command post inside the lodge.

“They can’t use the main roads,” she said. “Every exit is covered.”

“Arthur has property throughout the mountains.”

“Most of it is listed in the ledger.”

“Most?”

She looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca unfolded an old survey map.

“There’s one place Arthur never recorded under his name. An abandoned hydroelectric station on the west side of the reservoir. It belongs to a shell company.”

Elena checked the aerial images.

A narrow access road led from the mining trail to the station.

Thermal surveillance showed a vehicle near the building.

We moved before sunrise.

Elena wanted me behind the tactical line.

I ignored her.

The hydroelectric station rose from the fog like a concrete fortress. Rusted pipes ran down the cliff. Water thundered through the spillway beneath it.

We approached from the tree line.

No lights.

No movement.

Then Audrey’s voice came through my hidden earpiece.

“Dad?”

I stopped.

She was using Julian’s phone.

The call had been routed through emergency services.

“I’m here.”

Her voice was barely audible. “They’re in the control room. Arthur is hurt. Julian has a gun.”

“Are you injured?”

“My hand. Not bad.”

“Can you get out?”

“The door is chained.”

I signaled Elena.

She sent two teams toward the rear.

Audrey whispered, “There’s more. Arthur keeps saying he has an insurance file.”

“What file?”

“Evidence against everyone in the ledger. He says if the family falls, half the state falls with them.”

That explained why Arthur still believed he had leverage.

“Where is it?”

“A server room below the turbines.”

Arthur’s voice sounded in the background.

Audrey ended the call.

We entered through a maintenance door.

Inside, the station was a maze of steel staircases, old control panels, and echoing tunnels. Water roared beneath the floor.

Elena’s team moved toward the server room.

I followed the upper corridor toward Audrey.

A gunshot rang out.

Then another.

We ran.

In the control room, Julian stood behind Audrey with a gun. Arthur sat against the wall, blood soaking one sleeve. He had likely been injured during the escape.

Julian aimed at me.

“Stop.”

I stopped.

Audrey’s hands were bound in front of her. Blood covered her right palm where the restraint had cut her.

Arthur looked weaker than before, but his eyes remained alert.

“You should have accepted my offer,” he told me.

“You never made an offer.”

“I would have protected Audrey.”

“From what?”

“The consequences of her own disobedience.”

Audrey looked at him with disgust.

Julian pressed the gun closer to her head.

“Tell the officers to leave.”

“They won’t.”

“Then she dies.”

“No,” Arthur said.

Julian looked at his father.

Arthur forced himself upright.

“We need her alive.”

“Why?”

“To negotiate.”

Julian’s expression twisted.

All night he had believed Audrey was his final source of power.

Now his father had reduced her to a bargaining object.

Something broke between them.

“You always do this,” Julian said.

Arthur stared at him.

“Do what?”

“Act like I’m a child.”

“You behave like one.”

“I did everything you taught me.”

Arthur laughed bitterly. “And you still lost control of two wives.”

Audrey flinched.

Julian’s hand shook.

Arthur continued, too arrogant to recognize the danger.

“Rebecca escaped because you were careless. Audrey exposed us because you were weak.”

Julian turned the gun toward his father.

“You said they were the problem.”

“They were.”

“You said discipline would make them loyal.”

“Loyalty cannot be forced from defective people.”

Julian stared at him.

For years, Arthur had taught his son that women were possessions, cruelty was strength, and accountability was humiliation.

Now the lesson had reached its final form.

Julian wanted his father’s approval more than he wanted freedom.

And Arthur would never give it.

“You ruined me,” Julian whispered.

Arthur’s face hardened. “I created you.”

Julian fired.

The bullet struck Arthur in the chest.

Audrey dropped to the floor.

I moved toward her as Julian staggered backward, horrified by what he had done.

Arthur pressed both hands against the wound.

“You idiot,” he gasped.

Julian stared at the gun.

“I didn’t—”

Arthur smiled through the pain.

“Still weak.”

He reached for a second pistol hidden at his ankle.

Audrey saw it first.

“Dad!”

I threw myself toward Julian as Arthur fired.

The bullet hit Julian in the side.

Julian collapsed against the control panel.

Elena’s team entered from both doors.

“Drop the weapon!”

Arthur raised the gun again.

This time he pointed it at Audrey.

Before he could fire, Rebecca appeared on the upper staircase.

She had followed the second team inside.

“Arthur!”

He looked up.

Rebecca stood in full view.

Alive.

Unbroken.

The woman he had erased from the world had returned to witness his end.

Arthur aimed at her.

Elena fired once.

Arthur fell.

For several seconds, the only sound was the water beneath us.

Then Audrey ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly she cried out from her injured ribs. I loosened my grip but did not let go.

Julian was alive. Officers disarmed him and applied pressure to his wound.

He looked toward Audrey.

“Tell them I protected you.”

Audrey stared at him.

“You never protected me.”

“I loved you.”

“No. You loved being obeyed.”

His face collapsed.

That sentence wounded him more deeply than the bullet.

Below us, Elena’s team reached the server room.

Arthur’s insurance archive contained recordings, financial documents, blackmail files, and evidence of crimes reaching back twenty years.

By sunrise, federal agents were arresting judges, police officials, physicians, contractors, and politicians across three counties.

The Thorne network was collapsing.

But Audrey’s ordeal was not yet finished.

As paramedics prepared to take her away, Elena received a call from the hospital.

Miriam had survived surgery.

She was asking to speak with Audrey.

May you like

And she claimed she knew one final secret.

A secret about Audrey’s mother.
