Chapter 5 - A Face from the Past

My hands shook so violently the phone almost slipped from my grip.
The face staring back at me on the high-definition footage wasn't a random burglar. It wasn't a stalker or a transient criminal.
It was Marcus Vance.
Ten years ago, before I met Emily, Marcus was a rising star in the Seattle real estate world—and a violent, narcissistic sociopath. He was the man Emily had been engaged to before she broke off the wedding and ran away from her home city.
Seven years ago, Marcus was convicted of aggravated assault and wire fraud after a brutal altercation that nearly left a rival developer dead. He was sentenced to eight years in state penitentiary.
I remembered the nights Emily had cried in my arms during the early years of our marriage, telling me how terrified she was of him, how he had controlled every aspect of her life, and how she feared he would hunt her down the day he walked free.
He’s out.
I stared at the screen, my mind racing at light speed. Marcus was supposed to be in prison for another year at least. He must have been granted early parole—and the moment he got out, he came straight for my family.
Why was he here? Why was he coming into our bedroom every night like a specter? And why in God's name was my wife obeying him?
I looked over at Emily. She was curled into a ball, clutching the envelope he had thrown onto the bed against her chest. Tears were streaming down her face in silence, her body trembling with a terror so profound it was almost palpable.
She wasn't sleeping with him. She was terrified of him.
“You made sure of that, didn't you?”
Marcus’s words from the night before echoed in my head. He wasn't her lover. He was her warden. He was forcing her to drug me so he could control her without me interfering.
I felt a sudden, surge of protective rage wash over me, burning away the confusion and hurt. This man was stepping into my home, terrorizing my wife, and putting my daughter in a state of silent panic.
I reached out under the covers and grabbed Emily’s wrist.
She let out a muffled scream, jumping violently and dropping the envelope onto the mattress. She scrambled backward against the headboard, her eyes wide with absolute, blind terror.
"David!" she gasped, her voice trembling. "You... you're awake?"
I reached over and flicked on the bedside lamp. The harsh yellow light flooded the room, illuminating her pale, tear-stained face.
I picked up the black envelope from the bed, flipped it over, and held up my phone, displaying the crystal-clear night-vision photo of Marcus Vance standing at the foot of our bed.
"David, I... I can explain—" Emily sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "Please, David, don't look at it, please!"
"He’s been coming in here every night, Emily," I said, my voice dangerously calm, though every muscle in my body was taut as a wire. "Our eight-year-old daughter saw him. She came to me in tears because she thought I was going to be hurt."
Emily froze. Her hands slowly lowered from her face, her eyes wide with horrific realization. "Sophie... Sophie saw him?"
"Yes," I snapped, leaning closer. "Sophie saw him because you've been putting sedatives in my tea every night to keep me knocked out!"
Emily burst into uncontrollable sobs, collapsing forward onto her knees.
"I had to!" she wailed, her voice breaking into raspy gasps. "David, you don't understand! If I didn't drug you, he said he would kill you while you slept! He said he’d kill you, and then he’d take Sophie!"

She pointed a trembling finger at the black envelope in my hand.
"Open it," she whispered, her eyes dark with despair. "Open it and see what he has on us."
