CHAPTER 4 : Everything Falls Apart

I spent the entire night staring at the ceiling.
Not sleeping.
Not crying.
Just thinking.
Because sometimes the truth hurts more than a lie.
A lie gives you something to fight against.
The truth forces you to accept that the world you built your life around was never real.
Six months ago, I believed Elias abandoned me because he didn't love me enough.
I believed he chose fear over me.
I believed I was nothing more than a chapter he wanted to close.
But now...
I was starting to understand something much worse.
Elias hadn't walked away because he didn't care.
He walked away because someone convinced him that walking away was the right thing to do.
And that person had been controlling both of us.
Vanessa.
The woman who had destroyed my relationship.
The woman who had manipulated Elias.
The woman who may have stolen years from Sophie.
The next morning, Elias arrived at my apartment.
He looked like he hadn't slept either.
"Adelaide."
I opened the door but didn't invite him in.
"Tell me everything."
He nodded.
"I should have told you before."
"Yes."
He looked down.
"When Emily was pregnant with Sophie, she was going through a difficult time."
I listened carefully.
"Her health wasn't good. She was scared. She thought I was working too much."
"Were you?"
He looked at me.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised me.
"I was trying to build my company. I thought providing money was the same as being present."
He sighed.
"I was wrong."
I didn't say anything.
Because I knew that feeling.
How many times had I needed him emotionally, only to receive flowers or expensive gifts instead?
He continued.
"Three weeks before Sophie was born, Emily and I had an argument."
"What about?"
"About Vanessa."
My expression changed.
"Why?"
"Because Emily noticed something."
"What?"
"Vanessa was becoming too involved."
I crossed my arms.
"She knew."
Elias nodded.
"Emily told me she felt like Vanessa wanted to replace her."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What did you do?"
"I dismissed it."
His voice became quieter.
"I told Emily she was stressed."
He looked ashamed.
"I told her she was imagining things."
I looked away.
Because I knew that pain.
Being ignored.
Being made to feel like your feelings were unreasonable.
"After that argument, Emily went into labor early."
"And Vanessa told you Emily didn't want you there."
He nodded.
"She called me."
His jaw tightened.
"She said Emily was angry. She said Emily wanted space."
"And you believed her?"
His eyes closed.
"Yes."
The silence was painful.
"You didn't call Emily?"
"I did."
"Did she answer?"
"No."
"Did you go there anyway?"
His face fell.
"No."
I swallowed.
"Why?"
His voice broke.
"Because I was tired of feeling like I was failing everyone."
I stared at him.
And for a moment...
I saw the younger version of Elias.
The man who was terrified of becoming his father.
The man who didn't know how to stay when things became difficult.
But understanding someone didn't erase what they did.
"You should have gone."
"I know."
"You should have fought."
"I know."
"You should have chosen her."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I know."
Later that day, Elias and I met with a private investigator.
His name was Daniel Carter.
A former police detective who specialized in fraud cases.
He placed several documents on the table.
"I found inconsistencies."
Elias leaned forward.
"What kind?"
Daniel opened a folder.
"First, the DNA test."
My heart tightened.
"You found something?"
"Yes."
He placed another paper down.
"The original sample information doesn't match the hospital records."
Elias frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means someone submitted the wrong sample."
Silence.
"So the test was fake?"
Daniel nodded.
"Most likely."
I looked at Elias.
Vanessa had planned this.
She didn't discover a secret.
She created one.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"There is something else."
He pulled out another file.
"Financial records."
Elias looked confused.
"What does that have to do with Sophie?"
"Everything."
Daniel pointed to several transactions.
"After Emily died, Vanessa gained access to several accounts."
Elias's face changed.
"That was for Sophie's care."
"Some of it."
Daniel looked serious.
"But thousands of dollars went somewhere else."
My stomach dropped.
"Where?"
Daniel looked at Elias.
"Into a company owned by Vanessa's brother."
The room became silent.
Vanessa wasn't protecting Sophie.
She was using her.
That evening, Elias went to confront Vanessa.
I wanted to stop him.
I wanted to tell him not to go alone.
But part of me understood.
He needed to face the person who had controlled his life.
I stayed at home.
Until my phone rang.
It was Elias.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?"
No response.
"Elias?"
Then I heard his voice.
Broken.
"She's admitting it."
My body went cold.
"What?"
"Vanessa."
I stood up.
"What did she say?"
There was silence.
Then:
"She said she did everything because she loved me."
I felt sick.
"That's not love."
"I know."
"Where are you?"
"Her house."
My heart raced.
"Leave."
"Adelaide..."
"Leave now."
Another silence.
Then he whispered:
"She has Emily's journal."
I froze.
"What?"
"She said Emily wrote everything down."
My hands shook.
"Get it."
"I tried."
"What happened?"
His voice lowered.
"She burned it."
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Vanessa was arrested for evidence tampering and financial fraud.
But the biggest discovery came afterward.
A firefighter searching the remains of the burned documents found something hidden inside a metal box.
A USB drive.
Emily's final recording.
The police played it the next morning.
Elias and I sat together in a small conference room.
Neither of us spoke.
Then Emily appeared on the screen.
Her face was tired.
Her voice was weak.
But she smiled.
"If you're seeing this..."
She took a breath.
"Something happened to me."
Elias grabbed my hand without thinking.
I didn't pull away.
Not because everything was fixed.
But because this moment was bigger than us.
Emily continued.
"I need Elias to know something."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Sophie is his daughter."
Elias closed his eyes.
A broken sound escaped his mouth.
I squeezed his hand.
Emily continued.
"Vanessa tried to convince me that Elias didn't love me anymore."
The screen flickered.
"But I knew my husband."
She smiled sadly.
"He was scared. He made mistakes. But he loved us."
Tears rolled down Elias's face.
Then Emily said something that changed everything.
"Vanessa told me she would take everything from me if I didn't leave."
My heart stopped.
"She threatened me."
The room became silent.
"She said if I didn't disappear, she would make sure Elias believed I betrayed him."
I looked at Elias.
He looked destroyed.
Because all these years...
He had blamed himself.
Emily continued.
"I don't know what happens after this."
She touched her stomach.
"But if my daughter grows up..."
She smiled.
"I want her to know her father loved her."
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Two days later...
My pregnancy checkup became complicated.
Stress.
Exhaustion.
Too many emotions.
The doctor looked concerned.
"You need rest."
"I have been resting."
"No."
She looked at me seriously.
"You've been surviving."
Those words stayed with me.
Because maybe she was right.
I had spent six months fighting pain.
Fighting anger.
Fighting memories.
But now...
I had to fight for something else.
My daughter.
And maybe...
My family.
That night, I woke up with severe pain.
I knew immediately something was wrong.
I reached for my phone.
The first name I saw was Elias.
I hesitated.
Then called.
He answered instantly.
"Adelaide?"
His voice was full of panic.
"I need help."
Five minutes later, he was at my door.
He didn't ask questions.
Didn't hesitate.
He carried my bag.
Called the hospital.
Held my hand.
Just like I once wished he would.
At the hospital, doctors moved quickly.
"Elias?"
I looked at him.
He was terrified.
"Yes?"
"If something happens..."
His face changed.
"No."
"Elias, listen."
"No."
His eyes filled.
"Nothing is happening."
The doctors rushed me away.
And for the first time in months...
I saw him afraid.
Not of commitment.
Not of responsibility.
Afraid of losing us.
Hours passed.
Then the doctor walked out.
Elias stood immediately.
"Doctor?"
The doctor looked serious.
"We stabilized her."
He exhaled.
"But..."
My heart stopped.
"But what?"
The doctor looked at him.
"The baby is under stress."
Silence.
"She may need to be delivered early."
Elias closed his eyes.
And whispered:
"Please save them."
May you like
Then the doctor said the words that shattered him.
"We need you to make a decision."
