Part 2: The Mystery Under the Neon Light

The rhythmic, cold beeping from inside Unit 17 tore through the freezing stillness of Route 9. In my pocket, my phone kept buzzing relentlessly. The screen displayed one word: Mom.

Special Agent Elena Vance—who had just identified herself—placed a firm hand against my chest, stopping me.

"I’ll say it again, Julian. Do not answer that call. If you pick up, they will pinpoint your exact location."

"They? Who the hell is 'they'? My mother is back at the cemetery!" My voice cracked, my fingers gripping the brass key so tightly its sharp edges cut into my palm.

Vance didn’t answer. She quickly swept a small device over my clothes to check for tracking bugs, then nodded toward the lock of Unit 17.

Click.

The metal rolling door screeched upward, sending dust swirling into the dim, amber glow of a single neon bulb. Inside, there were no piles of cash, no weapons, and no crates. Just a solitary metal table in the center of the concrete room. On it sat a blinking red tracking receiver—the source of the beep—and a vintage 16mm film projector, already set up.

"Your father, Raymond Mercer, wasn't a retired accountant," Vance said, slamming the rolling door shut and sealing us inside. "He was the strategic mastermind behind the Federal Witness Protection Program (WITSEC) since the 1990s. He personally erased the identities and 'buried' hundreds of people to save their lives."

"And now he buried himself?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"No," Vance looked at me with a heavy, somber expression. "He did it to save you. This film was recorded twenty years ago, right after he discovered that his greatest enemy had infiltrated his own home."

Vance hit the switch on the projector. A beam of harsh white light flickered onto the gray concrete wall. My father’s face appeared—he looked younger, his hair still dark, but his eyes were haunted by profound exhaustion and fear.

"Julian, my son," his voice echoed from the projector’s internal speaker. "If you are watching this, it means my staged death has been triggered. I am so sorry for lying to you. But the woman at the cemetery today... the woman you have called mother for the past twenty years... she is not the real Evelyn Mercer."

I stumbled back a step, my knees nearly giving out. "No... that's impossible..."

My father on the screen pressed on, his words cutting like glass:

"Your real mother was murdered when you were six years old by a syndicate your father was investigating. The leader of that organization underwent extensive plastic surgery to steal her face, her voice, and her identity. She stayed by our side for two decades for one reason: to find the 'Black List'—the file containing the true identities of every protected witness. I hid that list in a place where only my bloodline can activate it. Do not trust her. Do not go home."

Right then, the projector cut to black. The steady beep of the tracking device suddenly shifted into a frantic, continuous whine.

Vance drew her Glock from its holster, her face turning pale. "They're here. Her text telling you to come home alone... it was a strike team activation code."
