Chapter 50 - An Eternal Line of Shields

Two weeks later, on a flawless September evening, the sun was sinking behind the jagged, snow-capped silhouette of Mount Index.
The farmhouse porch was bathed in deep, golden amber.
On the cedar lawn below, a crowd of familiar faces had gathered: David and Sarah Vance, holding hands on the grass; sixteen-year-old Lily, laughing as she poured fresh lemonade into paper cups; and nine-year-old Toby, tossing soft rubber balls across the pasture.
On the front steps stood Captain Tommy in full dress blues, holding a small velvet box.
Beside me sat three generations of Belgian Malinois.
On the wide fleece bed rested Titan. At nearly eleven years old, his muzzle was pure winter frost, his amber eyes soft and calm as he watched the evening light dance across the clover. Across his chest lay his Department Medal of Honor, polished until it gleamed like a mirror.
Standing proudly beside him was Jax, his copper eyes alert, wearing his State Star of Valor, his coat glossy and black-and-tan, unbroken and triumphant.
And in the center of the porch stood Nova.
At five months old, her puppy coat had begun to shed, replaced by the dense, weather-resistant armor of an adult Malinois. She stood square on all four paws, her head held high, her chest broad, perfectly still as Tommy knelt before her.
"For exceptional scent discipline, courage under fire, and service in the line of duty," Tommy announced, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet valley. "By order of the Chief of Police and the King County Sheriff, we hereby present Canine Recruit Nova with Badge #409-Charlie."
Tommy pinned the miniature silver star to the leather strap of Nova’s new working harness.
The pup didn't fidget. She lifted her black mask, gave Tommy’s hand one respectful lick, and turned to face her family.
Lily Vance walked up the stairs, carrying a fresh yellow frisbee—a brand-new disc, untouched by teeth.
She knelt beside Nova, wrapping her arms gently around the young dog's neck. "You're going to keep them safe, aren't you, sweet girl?"
Nova gave a soft, high-pitched whine of devotion, her tail wagging with a steady, rhythmic cadence.
Titan slowly raised his heavy, gray head from the mattress.
The old champion leaned forward, resting his chin across Nova’s small paws, letting out a long, rumbling breath of pure, unshakeable contentment.
Jax stepped forward, lowering his dark head until his nose touched his father’s ear, forming an unbroken line of shields: the legend who took the venom in the park, the champion who broke the syndicates in the storm, and the young sentinel who would carry the watch into the tomorrow.
The valley below grew quiet as the first stars appeared above the mountain peaks.
The wind carried the sweet, clean scent of cedar and cool river water.

There were no shadows left in the orchard. No venom left in the grass.
Because on this porch, beneath the endless Western sky, the guardians stood eternal—faithful, fearless, and forever unbroken.
